Half the world away

2016 is turning into a bit of a bad year for losing beloved British stars. So far, we've lost Bowie, Victoria Wood, Ed "Stewpot" Stewart, Paul Daniels, Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett - and now we have the sad news that Caroline Aherne has died, aged just 52.

She created the original "spoof chat-show host" in Mrs Merton - ostensibly a sweet little old lady, her acid tongue regularly tore strips off her guests...

...as well as one of the best comedies of the 90s, The Royle Family (co-starring Sue Johnston and Ricky Tomlinson):

With her "cool" credentials (she was married to Peter Hook of Joy Division/New Order, until that ended badly, and the Royle Family theme was recorded especially by none other than Oasis) and her shit-hot observational comedy skills, Miss Aherne was a bit of a legend; a one-off.

There'll never be another...

RIP Caroline Mary Aherne (24th December 1963 – 2nd July 2016)

  1. I have given up on 2016. All our favs dying, Shakespearian politics, and no sign of summer. I have put the winter duvet back on, and now I am going to hide beneath it.

    1. Other people have problems too:

Barbara: "Give us a go of that new lippy, Denise. It's a lovely colour, in't it? You know I can't usually wear red, it does nothing for me. Can't wear red, can I, Jim?"

Jim : "No, that's what's held you back all these years."

Barbara: "D'ya know I am looking my age, it's these last few months it's crept up on me. Mind you it could be worse at least I've still got me schoolgirl figure."

Jim: "I must clean that mirror."

Miss Aherne was a genius writer. Jx

    1. She was a troubled soul, as many geniuses are - but she left us a happy legacy of comedy. Jx

  3. Oh, I've just nearly tiddled myself watching that Mrs Merton compilation! How I loved that show! Another sad loss.

    1. She'd certainly have a raft of celebrities to take the piss out of in the afterlife (should one believe in such things)... Jx
