A surfeit of xylophones

This is rapidly turning into "Retro-Cocktail-Exotica Week" here at Dolores Delargo Towers, as we celebrate the birthday of one of the masters of the genre, Mr Martin Denny, born 103 years ago today.

Here he is, as ever performing in the tropical paradise of Hawaii, with a bizarre version of "a traditional French lullaby" - accompanied in this film by two clearly stoned youngsters and their lei. It's fab:

  1. As far as I'm concerned it's Retro Cocktail Hour, every hour of everyday. Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Yma Sumac are all records I discovered in my Dad's collection as a child. I still have the beautiful boxed sets of Yma's 45's. I used to close my eyes and imagine the strange world she must have inhabited while she wailed away in the background.

Incidentally, Sandy Warner, the beautiful model on many of Martin Denny's albums turned up on an episode of Perry Mason late, late last night.

    1. Ahhh - Yma Sumac! Now there was a magnificent woman. I have (needless to say) blogged about her several times over the years (my index is at the foot of every page btw), and we are the proud possessors of no less than four of her albums... Jx
