Ac-shon!

Were it not for the machinations of a certain global pandemic, tomorrow would have been Gay Pride in London - our Gay Xmas has instead been moved to the most inappropriate date of 11th September [yes, that's right; a vast crowd of gayers congregating en masse in the West End on the 20th anniversary of the Twin Towers atrocity! That's not going to give any would-be terrorists any ideas, is it?]...

Far be it for me to miss an opportunity for a party, however, and I have decided that in the absence of a real event only a triple-bill of absolute classics from the most glitter-ball-strewn, joyful era of sweaty clubbing will do - so crank up the smoke machine, squeeze into your shiniest lycra, and Thank Disco It's Pride Eve Friday!!

Have a great weekend, dear reader - even if you're not planning to parade down Regent Street in glitter stilettos and hot pants with your face painted in rainbow colours!

Footnote:

As I said back in 2012, it was this remix version of the final song in today's triumvirate that became my absolute obsession two decades later:

This is not the lobby of the Plaza Hotel?

It's been a long, dreary week, folks - but salvation is just a few hours away.

As befits our building anticipation of a weekend that also serves to celebrate all things wicked, demonic and downright scary (and that's just me after a few pints of Magners), here's Miss Alicia Bridges' fabulously camp classic I Love The Nightlife as she probably never envisaged it when it was first released - a dance number featuring Count Dracula and the former Mrs McMillan...

Thank Disco It's (Hallowe'en) Friday!

Have a spooky weekend, peeps!

I want some act-shon, I want to live..

Happy 55th birthday today to Disco diva Alicia Bridges, whose camp anthem I Love The Nightlife was given a new lease of life in the 1990s when it featured prominently in Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Of course I remember the song from the first time around in 1978, at the crest (and ultimately the start of the demise) of the Disco boom - and at the height of my teenage testosterone boom, too!

A (suddenly) tall fifteen-year-old, I was proud to be the only one of my friends to get served at the bar in the local youth club in Newport (South Wales), all the while buzzing to the sounds of Sylvester, Dan Hartman, Patrick Juvet and Miss Bridges...

[I only wish I could say they were all happy memories, but given the time it took me to finally leap screaming from the closet (I was 21) those teenage years were somewhat clouded by angst. I should have taken heed of the words!]

Ooooh I, I love the nightlife
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea

Please don't talk about love tonight
Please don't talk about sweet love
Please don't talk about being true
And all the trouble we've been through
Ah, please don't talk about all of the plans
We had for fixin' this broken romance
I want to go where the people dance
I want some action
I want to live
Action, I got so much to give
I want to give it
I want to get some too

Ooooh I, I love the nightlife
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea

Please don't talk about love tonight
Your sweet talking won't make it right
Love and lies just bring me down
When you've got women all over town
You can love them all and when you're through
Maybe that'll make, huh, a man out of you
I got to go where the people dance
I want some action
I want to live

Action
I got so much to give
I want to give it
I want to get some too

Oh I, I love the nightlife
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea

Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie
On the disco 'round, oh yea
