God! What kind of a woman do you think I am?!!

We're off to another of our fave pubs The Perseverance (near Great Ormond Street hospital in Bloomsbury) this afternoon, for another "gathering of the clans" at one of our irregular "Film Club" events.

This one is to mark John-John's birthday (next Thursday) - and given the impending spookiness of the Hallowe'en season, we'll be treated to not only The Witches of Eastwick (a beloved slice of campery), but also one of Bette Davis's most arch-camp-evil roles in The Anniversary:

Delicious!

Ring, ring, the happiest sound of them all

It is our dear friend John-John's [dare I say it? - 65th] birthday today!

Our little gang - of course - had a "gathering" to mark the occasion on Saturday, but...

...he is "ABBA's Number One Fan", after all - so how about an old, old favourite mash-up to mark the occasion?

Many happy returns, you old queen!!

Crackin' up

We're off later this afternoon for a get-together in one of our fave pubs, the Penderel's Oak in Holborn, to celebrate our friend John-John's birthday (which is actually on Monday).

It's also Hallowe'en weekend (that's on Tuesday) so we fully expect to see a load of people dressed up as witches, bitches, vampires and the like as the evening progresses!

John-John being Abba's "Number One Fan", I thought it appropriate to feature something from the Swedish supergroup's back catalogue by way of a celebration...

...and it's definitively their spookiest number:

I hear the door-bell ring and suddenly the panic takes me
The sound so ominously tearing through the silence
I cannot move, I'm standing
Numb and frozen
Among the things I love so dearly
The books, the paintings and the furniture
Help me...

The signal's sounding once again and someone tries the doorknob
None of my friends would be so stupidly impatient
And they don't dare to come here
Any more now
But how I loved our secret meetings
We talked and talked in quiet voices
Smiling...

Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror ever growing
Crackin' up
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up

These walls have witnessed all the anguish of humiliation
And seen the hope of freedom glow in shining faces
And now they've come to take me
Come to break me
And yet it isn't unexpected
I have been waiting for these visitors
Help me...

Now I hear them moving
Muffled noises coming through the door
I feel I'm
Crackin' up
Voices growing louder, irritation building
And I'm close to fainting
Crackin' up
They must know by now I'm in here trembling
In a terror ever growing
Crackin' up
My whole world is falling, going crazy
There is no escaping now, I'm
Crackin' up

Crackin' up? Moi? Not bloody likely - but who knows, after another all-day drinking sesh?

Well, I can dance with you, honey, if you think it's funny

There's light at the end of the tunnel, dear reader, as we crawl towards the end of another week.

I got paid on Thursday, the unseasonable warm spell across the UK is set to continue for a pleasant change, and...

...we actually do have a party to go to tonight!

It's our friend John-John's birthday next week, and we're off to Wetherspoons in Holborn for copious amounts of drink and a laugh with chums.

Happy birthday, you old fart - and have some Abba!

Thank Disco It's Friday!

HOW OLD???!!

It's our friend John-John's birthday today!

Our "gang" is gathering once more, as we do, for another all-day session at the Wetherspoons in High Holborn - which should be fun and games as always.

John-John's fanaticism about all things Abba is well-documented - so here, for his (and our) listening pleasure, is a selection of their classic hits...

...IN HINDI!

Inevitably, we do have this album in our collection here at Dolores Delargo Towers [and I have, of course, featured the marvellous Agha sisters here before]...

Happy birthday, John-John!

Autumn winds blowin' outside the window

On this day in 1899 the Siege of Ladysmith began in the Boer War, in 1917 the Balfour Declaration (of support for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine) was agreed, in 1938 Orson Welles broadcast his radio play of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds and caused a mass panic across the USA, and in 1973 the Bosphorus Bridge in Turkey (connecting the continents of Europe and Asia) was completed; a raft of assorted "names" were also born today, including Sir Christopher Wren, Grace Slick, Ruth Gordon, Charles Atlas, Stefan Dennis, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Mario Testino, Henry Winkler, Diego Maradona, Michael Winner, Ruth Hussey, Gavin Rossdale, Ezra Pound, Harry Hamlin, Anna Wing, Juliet Stevenson and (ahem) Ivanka Trump...

...and our friend John-John!

Since it is also the end of another uninspiring week of work and no parties to go to, I reckon we can combine the birthday boy's ABBA obsession with something a bit more "dancy", courtesy of some tarts, a boat and a pool - and Thank Disco Electro House It's Friday!

Happy birthday, dear.

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Five'll get ya ten, old Macky's back in town

A mini-timeslip moment again...

We're way back in prehistory - well, 1959, actually - the year of the Cuban revolution led by Che Guevara that saw Fidel Castro become President, Living Doll, Harold Macmillan, House of Fraser takeover of Harrods, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, independence for Cyprus, the Mau Mau uprising, Hugh Gaitskell, Alec Issigonis and the Mini, the UK's first duty-free shops, Hawaii becoming the 50th State of the USA, David Jacobs and Juke Box Jury, and Christopher Cockerell's first hovercraft; and the year that Billie Holiday, Errol Flynn, Kay Kendall, Cecil B. DeMille, Lou Costello, Mario Lanza, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper all died.

Famous names born sixty years ago (many of whom I have featured on this very blog over the year) include Sade, Robert Smith, Pete Burns, Simon Cowell, Irene Cara, Paul Whitehouse, Julian Clary, Tracey Ullman, Motown Records, Hugh Laurie, Youssou N'Dour, Marie Osmond, Kirsty MacColl, Barbie, Brian Setzer, Dame Emma Thompson, John McEnroe, Susanna Hoffs, Sheena Easton, Rupert Everett, Bryan Adams, the Boeing 707, Renée Fleming, Pauline Quirke, Steve Strange, Sarah Ferguson, Gary Kemp, Marcella Detroit, Astérix the Gaul, Lorraine Kelly, the M1 motorway, Val Kilmer, Ben Elton and Morten Harket, as well as my own "other half" Madam Arcati...

...and, today - our friend John-John!

And at #1 in our charts on his birthday all those years ago..?

Cheers, dear boy! Looking forward to the party on Saturday.

PS Here's a little - ahem - something extra:

Frolics

Off to the sunny East End this afternoon to John-John's place for a party-cum-Film-Club!

I anticipate there may be some outside drinking:

...lots of gossip:

...and some frolics!

Can't wait!

Do the snatch, clean, and jerk

He shares his birthday with a mixed bag of luminaries that include Ruth Gordon, Christopher Columbus, Henry Winkler, Michael Winner, Grace Slick, Harry Hamlin, Juliet Stevenson, Stefan Dennis, Diego Maradona and... Charles Atlas!

In a sort of twisted acknowledgement of the latter, here's an old fave [and rather befitting, as an early Hallowe'en treat] to get the old dear up and dancing - Happy Birthday, John-John!

Apparently, in just seven days, he can make you a ma-a-a-a-an..."

The birthday party on Friday was heaps of fun! Shame I can't squeeze into that basque any more...

My, my!

John-John as "Frida"

Our friend John-John's birthday was actually last week, but since he escaped the wet, foggy environs of London for sunny Seville last weekend, we are celebrating his "40-something-with-inflation-birthday" tonight instead (with a "Heaven and Hell" dressing-up party, to boot!).

So, by way of a (belated) birthday pressie, here's his fave band Abba in a couple of clever (and unexpected) mash-ups...

This one is listed as "ABBA vs Soft Cell"; I think it may well be "Abba vs Marilyn Manson", actually - but whoever or whatever, it's rather good! It's Tainted Waterloo:

[2019 UPDATE: gone from the interwebs, more's the pity]

And here's another rather odd choice; yet it works! Radiohead vs Abba - Creep (Takes It All):

Happy wotsits, John-John! You're so fucking special.

The "Melodi" goes round and round

Having had a verrrrry late night for John-John's "Melodifestivalen/Eurovision-themed" party (and after-party drinkies), and a verrrrry long lie-in as a consequence (I only woke up as the sun was getting low at 5pm!), I think the only thing I can do on this "lost day" is take a little virtual trip around London with the Park Lane Set '66!

Courtesy of the faboo Soft Tempo Lounge, of course.

Old devil

Sharing a birthday with (among others) Henry Winkler, Mario Testino, Juliet Stevenson, the lovely Ruth Gordon, the not-so-lovely Michael Winner, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Grace Slick, King George II, Harry Hamlin, and - ahem! - Charles Atlas, it's our friend John-John's birthday today!

I featured his personal obsession Abba very recently, so instead I thought I'd stick to another fellow birthday celebrant to provide the music - here's the former Neighbours heartthrob Stefan Dennis, and his ill-fated attempt to enter the pop world in the footsteps of co-stars Kylie and Jason...

Well, does it?

Happy birthday, sweetie!

I'm in the phonebooth, it's the one across the hall

We're back in London today, preparing to celebrate our favourite old queen's birthday with a traditional Hallowee'en-themed party tonight.

So, just as a special treat, here's a mash-up between two faves Blondie and Abba just for him. Happy (early) birthday, John-John!!

Fabba!

They really are a screa-um

Hallowe'en weekend continues...

They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're altogether ooky,
The Addams Family.

Their house is a museum.
When people come to see 'em
They really are a screa-um.
The Addams Family.

Neat

Sweet

Petite

So get a witch's shawl on.
A broomstick you can crawl on.
We're gonna pay a call on
The Addams Family.

Witches and bitches

I'm sitting here drinking my hundredth cup of tea and smoking my thousandth fag - the sign of having had a blinder of a night at John-John's birthday party last night. Suitably themed for Hallowe'en weekend, everyone interpreted "black'n'bling" in their own inimitable way, and we made a most spectacular crowd at the fabulously atmospheric front bar of the George Inn in Southwark, which John had hired for the occasion.

Lots of drinking, dancing and delirium later, we ended up taking over the upstairs function room at the Dog House on Kennington Cross, dancing on tables and singing our heart out (to Oasis, of all things, as I recall - oo-er). We even won the prize for best Hallowe'en costumes, with a bottle of champers from the landlady Camilla. A fab night indeed!

Being Hallowe'en, weird creatures seemed to be everywhere - from the aggressive drunk who tried to steal Alistair's hat to the bloodily made-up punter at the Dog House - but nothing quite prepared us for the surprise of getting home at 3am to find some strange woman curled up asleep on our doorstep. I soon shifted her off the premises, despite her hurling insults at me... An odd end to a crazy evening. Great fun nonetheless!

As it is actually Hallowe'en today, here's a little message from Elvira:

Whoooo.
