Then why am I wearing Walmart?

Having heard this one on - of all places - the BBC's classical station Radio 3, I realised I hadn't featured our fave glamourpuss close-harmony girl band, the Puppini Sisters for a while.

Let's redeem that, shall we?

Not merely content with finding a video for that faboo cover of a classic, on my travels I also found this [surprisingly, given the format we became so familiar with in 2020-21, pre-pandemic] little gem:

Faboo!

Perfect for a laid-back Sunday [I'm in catch-up mode after a long and busy day yesterday, visiting Mother in Portsmouth], methinks...

Don't know what I want, but I know how to get it

After the hurricane yesterday that brought down one [just one, unfortunately] of the hideous weedy trees that surround and shade the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers, we've spent today humping and shifting [oo-er] the pots around, potting-up and watering - to begin the transition between the late Spring flowers that are going over and (to give prominence to) those specimens that are going to give us the greatest show for the rest of the year.

And here, to accompany our sunny Sunday efforts - the Sex Pistols as you've never heard them before!

Get that ice or else no dice

No sooner do I discover that the lovely Puppini Sisters have a new album out (and put it on my Xmas list), but the girls release today the video for their new single from that very collection.

In their own inimitable way, I think the Puppinis were made for the song Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend...

The Sisters also have a new YouTube channel

Look for my limousine, once more it's not there

With all the hoo-ha in the press today about that pair of lucky bastards who won the £101million EuroMillions jackpot last week, I feel it is appropriate to feature once again a song that sums up my feelings on the matter...

Woke up this morning with a strange sense of dread
Brewed my own coffee, made my own bed
No breakfast laid out, no freshly baked bread
I had a pop tart instead
Fished through my closet to find a clean dress
Nothing's been washed, the place is a mess, mmmmmmm
Look for my limousine, once more it's not there
I can't believe I'm not a millionaire

Where is the room that hosts my shoes
The snooty butler and private mews
My invitation to Elton's bash
But most of all, where is my cash?

Awwwwwwww

Dinner from Asda, no lobster in sight
Tears at the check out, this don?t feel right
And as I lug my bags up three flights of stairs
I can't believe I'm not a millionaire
Aaah-uh
I can't believe I'm not a millionaire
Aaah-uh
I can't believe I'm not a millionaire

I love the Puppini Sisters!

As long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive

Gloria Gaynor, whose 60th birthday it is today, was a bonafide soul singer when she began her long showbiz career in the late 60s. However it was the Disco era that brought fame and fortune to this particular diva, "topping and tailing" it as she did - with Never Can Say Goodbye in the mid 70s, and of course her classic I Will Survive at the end of the decade, keeping the flame alive into the 80s with her upbeat version of I Am What I Am.

Unfortunately coinciding with this later success, Miss Gaynor well-and-truly blotted her copybook with her number one buying audience, the gays, when she became a bible-thumper and allegedly said a few disparaging remarks that immediately lost her that treasured "gay icon" status.

So, in this 30th anniversary year of the song - and in honour of my tacky music tradition on a Monday - I thought it best to focus on the (now well-and-truly clichéd) anthem for which she remains famous, in its many incarnations (but not that awful Sugababes song)...

And, finally, the original...

Happy birthday, Glo! Even if you're a silly bitch who thinks we all "should be led to your God", we continue to ignore your misguided comments as we lip-synch along to your songs...

The great Puppini riot 2008

We went to the South Bank last night to see the wonderful Puppini Sisters, full of post-Xmas relief, and in need of a laugh. What a peculiar evening it turned out to be...

OK, we have nothing against Mr McAlmont (David) - we weren't expecting a support act, but he's quite good. Even when he turned out to be there not to sing, but to play as DJ, spinning some jolly 1940s tunes as a warm-up, we didn't mind. However this caused some rumblings amongst the audience, who began complaining they'd turned up at 7.30pm to see the Puppinis and not to "listen to the radio".

Like sheep, this discontent led to one or two walk-outs, followed by a few more, and more, loudly proclaiming they wanted their money back. Fearing a riot, the management unexpectedly announced an early (and extended) interval, poor David departed the stage, and we milled out to queue at the loos and the bar. I have never known anything like it at any concert before - and believe me, I've seen some crap support acts!

The atmosphere was still a bit chilly when the curtain call rang out, and we resumed our seats for the arrival of the main event. I love the Puppini Sisters, and they did us proud with their jaunty Andrews Sisters-style pastiches of classic numbers like Heart of Glass, Crazy in Love, The Smiths' Panic, and Wuthering Heights, together with some original 1940s material, and their own numbers - including my personal favourites (I Can't Believe I'm Not A) Millionaire and Soho Nights.

Despite a very shaky costume change (which presumably took so long because we'd had our unplanned interval so early), they gave a sterling performance in the face of the bloody awful acoustics of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the miserable faces of the audience - who were quite pathetic when it came to the sing-a-long numbers.

I can't help wondering if the Puppini Sisters should stick to what they know - they are at their very best in smaller, club-style venues, after all. Both the venue and the South Bank audience seemed to conspire to make this a less-than-perfect evening with an otherwise brilliant act.

Here's a collection of the girls' greatest...

How could being jilted make me feel so good?

"I jumped through hoops to keep that man, oh how did I get it so wrong...? I tried new positions, I learned his friends' names, I made myself sit through football games"

View with awe the latest quality video from the lovely Puppini Sisters! It certainly cheered me up...

Oh what a show

John-John and I went to see the Soho Divas revue last night - a fantastic show!!

Never having been to the Soho Revue Bar (formerly Raymond's Revue Bar, famous for several decades as a strip joint) we weren't sure what to expect. But the venue has absolutely no hint of seediness, and is in fact an extremely glamorous old-fashioned cabaret club, with individual tables and banquettes arranged in tiers from the floor next to the stage. Remnants of the past remain however, at either side of the seating area, where tables on raised platforms are arranged around the stripper poles...

Our host and MC for the evening was the fantastic Lea deLaria. Bold, brassy and outrageously butch lesbian diva that she is, she held the proceedings together magnificently with lewd humour - even flirting with the Polish waitresses!

First on stage was jazz singer and Ronnie Scott's stalwart Natalie Williams, who, despite a bit of a shaky start, wowed the audience with smoky renditions of familiar favourites including an excellent version of I Will Survive. She was followed by former Shakespear's Sister vocalist Marcella Detroit - such a sublime voice! Marcella has evidently taken to the cabaret/lounge type of singing with a vengeance and she gave us brilliant interpretations of numbers by Cole Porter and the like, as well as superb renditions of more modern classics including Nothing Compares 2 U and her own song Stay.

But the treat of the evening came after the interval with the first ever London appearance of the superb vocal impressionist Jimmy James. With uncanny skill, he brought a selection of divas such as Eartha Kitt, Cher, Billie Holiday and Judy Garland to the stage. But it was his brilliant Bette Davis that brought the house down. Flouting the smoking ban to the full, it was almost as if the bitter old icon was actually in the room!

Headline diva, the supremely talented West End star Caroline O'Connor (who we saw most recently in On The Town), had a hard act to follow. But she rose to the challenge, belting out her repertoire of Judy Garland numbers from her recent success in Edinburgh, the hit show End of the Rainbow. A superb end to a superb show.

But even after the show we were treated to a marvellous late night in the Green Room bar upstairs. Not only were Caroline O'Connor and the players still around, but at their table was none other than the cute Will Young and his pretty boyfriend! But best of all, we were joined on the banquette next to the star table by none other than those lovely ladies The Puppini Sisters, and they told us all about the evening they'd had.

The girls had been invited by drag hostess Jodie Harsh to play a guest DJ slot at Circus, the gay "burlesque" night that followed our revue in the main room downstairs. It hadn't gone entirely to their liking, but they seemed chipper and very chatty. The Puppini Sisters are genuinely lovely, friendly people - how rare among the stars of the music world.

What an absolutely brilliant night!
