No, no, no, I

The first full week back after any kind of break is always excruciating, irksome and tiring. At least last week, half the annoyingly needy people I usually deal with were still on leave after the Festering Season...

I'll just be very glad when 4 o'clock comes, for that's the moment the party starts - and we can get our most lurid outfits-with-feathers on, mouth some lyrics in front of psychedelic graphics, try and fend off a load of cheesy Spanish safety gays, and Thank Disco It's Friday! Just like Miss Gloria Gaynor:

Another mind-fuck.

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

I don't even know what I'm thinking, and I'm not even drinking

Yay! Weekend is looming - and, yes, I know I am actually on leave, but...

...with a "replacement for the cancelled New Year's Eve Party" gathering-of-the-clans tomorrow to look forward to, followed by a little mini-break in Braintree with The Boys (which will be a chilly one, no doubt, given the turn in the weather), there's definitely a "party mood" in the air! Let's celebrate with a true "Clash of the Disco Titans" - and Thank Disco It's Friday!!

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Somewhere there's heaven

I may be off today (getting stuff in order for tomorrow's "end-of Summer-Season" spectacular, Proms in the Park!), but I always like to end any week in a certain fashion...

How about yesterday's birthday girl Miss Gloria Gaynor, resplendent in yards of silver lamé, performing a dance version of one of Ella Fitzgerald's signature songs?

Who am I to disagree?!

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon?

Faboo.

Have a good one, peeps!

It says, "Turn around, you fool"

Sensibly, the Scottish people have voted "no" today to independence from Great Britain.

As we hurtle towards another fun-filled party weekend (for some of us; not the SNP obviously), there is only one song appropriate to play to greet the news, really.

It's Miss Gloria Gaynor (who celebrated her 65th birthday earlier this month) and Never Can Say Goodbye... Thank Disco It's Friday!

I never can say goodbye
No, no, no, I
I never can say goodbye

Every time I think I've had enough
And start heading for the door
There's a very strange vibration
Piercing me right to the core

It says, "Turn around, you fool
You know you love him more and more"
Tell me why is it so?
Don't wanna let you go!

Hey, I never can say goodbye boy, ooh baby
I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, hey

I never can say goodbye
Oh, no, I
I never can say goodbye

I keep thinking that our problems
Soon are all gonna work out
But there's that same unhappy feeling
And there's that anguish, there's that doubt

It's that same old dizzy hang-up
I can't do with you or without
Tell me why is it so?
I don't wanna let you go!

Hey, I never can say goodbye boy, ooh baby
I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, oo

Have a great weekend, everyone - even the Scottish ones.

Give me the hook or the ovation

Dear old Jerry Herman was 83 yesterday.

It's also the end of a particularly tortuous week back in work after a week off for the move.

So what better way to celebrate the coming weekend than with the former "friend of the gays" (now, sadly, yet another diva-turned-god-botherer) Miss Gloria Gaynor [here, incomprehensibly, accompanied by what appears to be a collective of prostitutes...] and her version of one of the Great Man's most anthemic numbers - I Am What I Am?

Thank Disco It's Friday!

No, no no, I...

Stressful stuff, this moving business! All the planning, all the closing down of utility bills, all the money! (eek!) And to top it all, my home broadband chose last night to quit working - just one more thing to sort out...

Never mind, eh? This is a momentous Friday - our last at the current Dolores Delargo Towers after nine years.

Who better to help us celebrate in true weekend fashion than the mother of roller-boogie herself, Miss Gloria ["sorry about being a god-botherer"] Gaynor herself? Thank Disco It's Friday!

As long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive

Gloria Gaynor, whose 60th birthday it is today, was a bonafide soul singer when she began her long showbiz career in the late 60s. However it was the Disco era that brought fame and fortune to this particular diva, "topping and tailing" it as she did - with Never Can Say Goodbye in the mid 70s, and of course her classic I Will Survive at the end of the decade, keeping the flame alive into the 80s with her upbeat version of I Am What I Am.

Unfortunately coinciding with this later success, Miss Gaynor well-and-truly blotted her copybook with her number one buying audience, the gays, when she became a bible-thumper and allegedly said a few disparaging remarks that immediately lost her that treasured "gay icon" status.

So, in this 30th anniversary year of the song - and in honour of my tacky music tradition on a Monday - I thought it best to focus on the (now well-and-truly clichéd) anthem for which she remains famous, in its many incarnations (but not that awful Sugababes song)...

And, finally, the original...

Happy birthday, Glo! Even if you're a silly bitch who thinks we all "should be led to your God", we continue to ignore your misguided comments as we lip-synch along to your songs...
