Of sci-fi geeks, rainbow rebellion, a gay barman, incompetent councils and "You can fill my hole again"

Now that's what I call a weapon!

It's another snippets post today. dear reader:

  • Oldest bitch in town news: Farewell Baddie Winkle, nonagenarian model, influencer and internet personality, whose unforgettable slogan was "Stealing your man since 1928"...
  • And finally... Among another mismatched list of fellow celebrants that includes the peerless Sylvester, Idris Elba, Tim Henman, Jo Anne Worley, Macy Gray, Spitting Image creator Roger Law, Greg Rusedski, Mathew Horne, Pippa Middleton, Emily Maitlis, CeCe Peniston and - erm - Buster Bloodvessel of Bad Manners, troubled tabloid fodder and founder member of Atomic Kitten, Kerry Katona is 45 years old today. Although she'd left the group by the time this became the girls first #1 hit - and was edited out of later versions of the video in favour of her replacement - here is the original:

I love that song - unsurprisingly, since it was written by Andy McCluskey of OMD - and have happy memories of seeing the girls (minus Kerry) perform it live at the post-Pride festival [when such a thing still existed] at Finsbury Park way back in 2001. We, of course, changed the lyrics to "You can fill my hole again". As you do.

And the weather? Windy, but lovely and warm. The garden's been watered, and all's right with the world. Apart from the "demon children" next door, of course.

Begins to turn your head around

The weekend's almost upon us, dear reader - and thank heavens for that!

We need to ramp up the ante in anticipation of the three-day celebrations to come - so let's have a "double-bill" of delights, shall we?

First up, the marvellous Mr Frankie Valli [who we saw on stage at Proms in the Park back in 2016 - and is still going strong] is 90 years old today. All hail! Here is what in my opinion is one of his best ever hits... with a little help from Mary Poppins!

Moving on to tomorrow, however, there's not a sci-fi geek on earth who hasn't clocked that date - "May the Fourth be with you", otherwise known as Star Wars Day! [Also notable as the date my sister and her uber-sci-fi-nut hubby got wed in 2013]

To round things off in the most appropriate-yet-bizarre way possible, here's Meco's "classic" version of the Star Wars theme, accompanied by what is charitably described as a "ballet" by the Dutch answer to Flick Colby, Penney de Jager... Thank Disco It's Friday!

[As I said last time I posted this: "What did Meco do to deserve this?"]

Have a great May Day weekend, peeps!

You too could be a hero (or villain, or robot)!

Fancy owning C3PO's head, Indiana Jones' whip, Captain Marvel's shield or even Freddy Krueger's murderous glove?

If you had a million or so to spare, you could - as these, and much, much more will be going under the hammer next week!

Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction 2023 takes place between 9th and 12th October - and it will be live-streamed, so you don't need to miss any of the action...

[I had a look through the catalogue, and couldn't find Chris Hemsworth's penis listed, more's the pity...]

The man who designed the Seventies

What connects these iconic and familiar items, each intrinsically associated with the 1970s?

...they were all the brainchild of one person - the frighteningly prodigious designer Tom Karen, whose death was recently announced.

What a remarkable man.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away

Another week grinds inexorably to a close, but the weather has finally bucked its ideas up and it will continue to be bright and crisp for the next few days, so there's something to look forward to!

We need to keep up the party mood, and what better way but to wallow in the annals of Holland's Top Pop - their possibly even tackier version of the BBC's Top of the Pops.

What did Meco do to deserve this? And on his 80th birthday, too...

Bedankt Disco het is Vrijdag!

Have a good weekend, peeps.

Drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra

"Remember the white dress I wore all through that film? George came up to me the first day of filming, took one look at the dress and said: 'You can't wear a bra under that dress.'"

"'OK, I'll bite,' I said. 'Why?' And he said: 'Because ... there's no underwear in space.'"

"He said it with such conviction. Like he had been to space and looked around and he didn't see any bras or panties anywhere."

"He explained. 'You go into space and you become weightless. Then your body expands but your bra doesn't, so you get strangled by your own underwear.'"

"I think that this would make for a fantastic obituary. I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra."
Carrie Fisher (21st October 1956 – 27th December 2016)
