Sad news reaches us today...

Sir Monti Rock III - surely the campest vocalist of his, if not every generation - has twirled his last twirl, boogied his last boogie and, in a puff of dry ice, ascended the glitterball-strewn stairway to Fabulon.

His career began as a celebrity hairdresser, but his flamboyant clothes and personality led him to become something of a fixture on the TV chat show circuit. Famously, he once accused none other than Liberace of "stealing his look"!

By 1974, the music style known as "Disco" had begun to erupt, and Sir Monti Rock III burst upon the dance scene with a new group - Disco Tex and His Sex-O-Lettes! Their first single, Get Dancin', never failed to fill the dance floor in New York clubs, and their appearances at Trude Heller's and Le Jardin nightclubs were always sure to sell out. The song was written by Kenny Nolan and Bob Crewe (who wrote loads of hits for the Four Seasons). Backing vocals, for a time, were by Jocelyn Brown. Needless to say, he was head-hunted for a cameo appearance as the club DJ in the film Saturday Night Fever, and his legend continued - Get Dancin' was featured in The Simpsons, and Disco Tex and his Sex-O-Lettes were name-checked in Elvis Costello's song Invasion Hit Parade and prominently in the Pet Shop Boys' 1996 hit Electricity.

Here is the classic for which he will forever be so fondly remembered - the song that launched campery of a most glittering kind upon an unsuspecting, and grateful, public in that dismal recession-hit mid-70s era:

Despite the fact the internet has been down (again) since 10pm last night here at Dolores Delargo Towers (and I have been off all day, so doubly frustrating - couldn't even go on the interwebs from my desk in the office, as I usually do as a way of alleviating the boredom) we are in an especially chipper mood.

It's not any old weekend looming - it's Gay Xmas Eve!

Tomorrow, we will once more be joining the glittering throng for London's Gay Pride parade, so that means dressing in our finery (I have been working on mine for months now...) and starting the day with a champagne breakfast at around 10.30am - gulp.

There's even more good news for our chums across the pond to make the festivities even more celebratory - for today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that it is legal for all Americans, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, to marry - an historic victory for gay rights activists, indeed!

As is our wont as any weekend looms, there has to be a suitable song to get us in the party mood - and what better than Disco Tex and his Sex-o-Lettes with this immortal disco classic?

Your Majesty

It's a special weekend for us Brits, and for the whole Commonwealth (over much of which she remains Head of State) - it's HM Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee! With a massive flotilla down the Thames on Sunday (which we will not be going to see, for fear of being squished in the crowd), the mega-concert featuring Sir Tom, Dame Shirley, Dame Elton (if her cough has gone), Dame Cliff, Princess Kylie, Sir Paul, Annie Lennox, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams and some lesser mortals on Monday (for which we failed to get free tickets in the draw), and the glittering carriage procession to St Pauls on Tuesday.

In other words, a nice long weekend off in which to party!
