Gotta get up, gotta get up, gotta get up

Yet another American excuse for a marketing campaign (like "Blue Monday" [in January, to sell us holidays], Valentine's Day [to sell us flowers and sickly pink-and-red tat], Hallowe'en, and so on) has become "a thing" over here as well in the last few years - Black Friday. Inextricably tied to (the entirely Stateside-based event) Thanksgiving, it's bewildering why, or how, it has emerged here when we don't even celebrate that!

Sigh.

However, at least it is the end of another wearisome week, so I think it's time for a party, don't you?

Here's a man who celebrates Black Friday in his own way - Thank Disco Cazwell It's Friday!

If that's sent you blushing flowers heading off for your smelling salts - try this instead:

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

A clatter of platters

It's stormy and bleak out there. Just as well I had a lie-in 'till 1.30pm today - I didn't miss anything, obviously!

Anyhoo, it's time once again for a little foray into some of the "newer music" that has caught my ear of late...

Let's open with the full version (and typically odd video) for the maestro David Bowie's new single Blackstar (for which I posted a teaser in my last musical round-up back in October). It's certainly a breath-takingly symphonic work, if hardly likely to go down as one of the great man's classic singles:

It reminds me somewhat of some of Mr Bowie's more extravagant early album tracks, such as Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud from 1969:

While we're on the subject of living legends, Siouxsie's back! Apparently this track was featured on the TV series Hannibal, which we've never seen - so here instead is a fan-made video for her chillingly gorgeous Love Crime with clips (appropriately enough) from Cocteau's Gothic masterpiece La Belle et la Bête:

Lightening the mood somewhat, the gossip columns have been a-buzz about the long-awaited new collaboration between sisters Kylie and Dannii Minogue. It's a fun enough song. Shame it's about bloody Xmas. It's 100 Degrees:

Our houseboys Kazaky - who seem to release a dozen tracks a year - have another new one out! This time (unfortunately) they appear to have kept most of their clothes on in the video. However, the clobber they have chosen leads me to imagine what might happen if the footmen of Downton Abbey decided to go to a gay disco. With heels on. That's no bad thing - it's Your Style!

Speaking of camp-a-plenty, you can't go far wrong with the new one from Take That. With a hilarious video featuring the lovely Mark Owen dressed in Huggy Bear's cast-offs and a Bad Disco scene straight out of a 70s/80s sitcom, here's Hey Boy:

Now, as any fule know, here at Dolores Delargo Towers we do like to keep a secret. Especially if it's a juicy one! And speaking of juicy, here's Italian hottie Alex Palmieri with a great one (secret, that is). OK, the song's a bit of a half-arsed sort-of mish-mash of Eurovision and Olly Murs, but oh! The video for Nicholas' Got A Secret is rather a joy...

A real pick-me-up next, courtesy of a new video (by Eats Everything) for an old(ish) choon by Tiga vs Audion. Starring "Welsh super-fans" Brenda and Gwyn, it's faboo:

Another prolific artist is the deadpan-yet-masterful Mr Martin Solveig. For this release he's joined by the rather fab Sam White (former backing singer for Florence & The Machine, apparently). It's +1:

And finally, the answer to all the Middle East's problems solved in one mega-camp video! It's (possibly the only rapper we can bear to listen to here at the Towers) the magnificent Cazwell (here with someone or some thing, called Naaldekoker) and The Biscuit:

As always, enjoy! Let me know what you think...

New Musical Excess

It's 2014, dear reader - Happy New Year!

As we slowly recover from last night's annual melée that is the Dolores Delargo Towers NYE party, it is time, methinks, to recall some of the musical highlights of the year that was...

We had many great musical nights out during 2013 - A Chorus Line, The Tailor-Made Man, Mile High - the Musical, The Supreme Fabulettes supporting Leslie Jordan, Marianne Faithfull, Merrily We Roll Along, Brian Ferry at Proms in the Park, Eve Ferret and Hazel O'Connor, and Top Hat among them.

However, the year in music really belonged to one man. Surprising the world (as he inevitably does), our icon Mr David Bowie returned to the limelight in January after a decade away, with a new single Where Are We Now? - a prelude to his absolutely brilliant album The Next Day:

As excellent as that comeback trip was, it was the title track of the album that I think really did it for me (as featured here in May)...

...and (needless to say), I will remember the stunning tribute exhibition David Bowie is... for the rest of my life!

Speaking if surprising musical resurrections, our beloved Pet Clark really astounded the critics with her Cut Copy Me single and marvellous album Lost in You (featured here back in March) - and one of the best events of the year was seeing her live in October. Here's the single:

But what of the rest? It wasn't such a bad year for newer music, either...

I first highlighted the superb single I Could Be The One by Avicii vs Nicky Romero way back in January, and lo and behold the benighted music-buying yoof agreed - this was one of the biggest dance songs of the year:

Speaking of mega-hits of the year, it was in February that I first picked up on the fab'n'shouty I Love It by Icona Pop featuring Charlie XCX, and the rest is history, as it dominated early summer in the UK:

Mention "shouty", and of course we have to mention our beloved Luciana! In June 2013, she teamed up with the gayest-of-in-yer-face-gays Cazwell to knock the spots off the opposition:

A completely contrasting singer who I really adored during 2013 is the marvellously camp Miss Caro Emerald. Featured here in August, here's her anthem for my life, it's Liquid Lunch:

We also welcomed back an old favourite in August, the singer formerly of the mega-kitsch Bear Force One, now calling himself Circuit21, and his version of gay 80s standard Love In The Shadows:

Our very own superstars the Pet Shop Boys had a rather good renaissance in 2013 with the fab album Electric, and a clutch of great singles from it. Here, from June, is my fave - Axis:

It was quite a year for our favourite sexy houseboys Kazaky, too! They featured here not once, not twice, but three times - in August it was their exhortation to Touch Me (yes, please!) and in October It Doesn't Matter; but it was their protest song against the creeping repression of gays in Russia and their native Ukraine (from April), Crazy Law that really was the business!

Princess Kylie, on the other hand, had a less memorable year. In 2013 she not only signed to Jay-Z's management firm Roc-Nation (gawd help us! - the home of bloody Rihanna, MIA and Rita Ora) and split with her gorgeous boyfriend Andrés Velencoso, but her official single Skirt was in my opinion so unbearable it didn't even merit being featured here. Two side-projects with other artists, however, did - the very strange Whistle (with Icelandic experimental combo Múm, as featured here in March), and this rather lovely collaboration with Laura Pausini (from October), Limpido:

There were many contenders in 2013 for the title "catchiest song of the year", but Le Grind's I Was There (Where Were You?) from June was certainly one of them!

Many, too, are the contenders for "song of 2013". However, for me - and I make no apologies for featuring it here for a third time (first time was in October) - given the unhappy situation in Russia, and with the Sochi Winter Olympics almost upon us, it simply has to be the magnificent Xelle and Red Flag!

Let us look forward to another good year in music - roll on, 2014!

Lieder für heute

Another selection of some newer musical delights is in order today, methinks...

First up, those marvellous pioneers of 80s electronic music OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) are back with a new album (English Electric) and a fab single Dresden:

Regular faves here at Dolores Delargo Towers, those mad Melbourne-ites Parralox have a new single out, (featuring the rather cute Ryan Adamés), which has rather an early "house" feel about it - it's Silent Morning:

Helen Marnie, lead vocalist and mainstay of the uber-cool Ladytron, started a solo career in 2012. Here, from her debut album Crystal World, is the single The Hunter. I like it - it reminds me a little of Tears for Fears...

I am not usually known to be strangely drawn to "urban" shouty music, but once again the mere presence of the unbowed queen of dance music Luciana, in the estimable company of the horny gay bad boy Cazwell, makes this song irresistible - it's Guess What?:

Speaking of fierce dance divas, here's the glamazon Bex and her new song What You Are. She loves only gold...

From the dance music of today, let's go right back to the heady days of Studio 54 in the company of the utterly fabulous Le Grind and their drag-tastic new single I Was There (Where Were You?) It's simply divine, daaahlings!

And finally, continuing our countdown to Gay Pride on Saturday - who else could we choose to conclude this short, sharp collection but but the "Gay Pimp" himself Mr Jonny McGovern, with his anthem for Florida's "Gayest Weekend of All Time" (which took place this Spring), The Gayest Of All Time?

Enjoy, sweeties - and let me know your thoughts!

Chansons d'amour

Time once more to visit some of the newer choons I have picked up on lately.

Just for a laugh I thought I'd open with something that - had it featured Legs and Co dancing to it - would probably sit more comfortably in my regular "Tacky Music Monday" slot. It's a brand new remix by DJ Dave Audé of Stand By Your Man! What on earth would Tammy think?

Swedish band Straight Up! are obviously anything but [straight]. I've loved them ever since their oh-so-subtle single Twink two years ago. Their Show The World Tonight was the anthem of Stockholm Pride last year, and this Pride season they're back with another pumpin' anthemic dance number Family:

The trio calling themselves The Face are certainly "proud" - so much so, their clothes just fall off in this video! The single Love Stuck is a fabulously catchy number reminiscent of Alcazar, which is a good thing, and I like it!

Keeping up the (blood) pressure in the contest for "sluttiest gay artist" with Johnny McGovern aka Gay Pimp, Noo Yawk's finest Cazwell returns with Rice and Beans - and one helluva sexy video!

To calm us down a little after that, the magnificent Pet Shop Boys' new single Invisible catches the boys in one of their extremely wistful, sombre moods - truly beautiful, but perhaps much more suitable for a late-night chill-out session than the record-buying X-Factor generation...

And finally, the find of the week - here's a most hypnotic and ultra-fabulous single called The Witch by the clunkily-named Dombrance featuring Sourya (who? They're both French, That's all I know.). Electro-tastic!

Once again, enjoy - and let me know what you think!

Girls. Film. Pop.

Time once more for some new musical discoveries...

And first, the exciting news - it's here!!! At last - after 30 years, Duran Duran have released the sequel to Girls on Film!

Seriously, folks, here's the video we've all been waiting for. Hot off the press today, it's Girl Panic (featuring a coterie of supermodels and the occasional fleeting glimpse of the boys themselves):

How do you follow that extravaganza? How about something rude and shouty? It's the outest-of-out gays Cazwell in more of a battle than a duet with the kinky Peaches, and the fab Unzip Me:

Taking more than a little inspiration from the heady pumpin' sounds of early 90s house music - and with a suitably funny retro video (taking the piss out of breakfast TV of those days) to boot - here's The 2 Bears with Bear Hug:

We at Dolores Delargo Towers always welcome the return of a reformed slut to the musical world. And of course, former porn star turned John Waters muse Miss Traci Lords fits the bill perfectly - thanks again to Mike over at Pop Trash Addicts for the heads-up, here's a preview of her new single Last Drag.

And to conclude this musical melange, here's a house favourite band the (rather cute) Sound of Arrows, with their latest, Wonders. Wonderful!

As ever, enjoy!

Ice Cream, anyone?

It's Tuesday, the long weekend has flown by (as always when you haven't won the Lottery!), and I need cheering up.

Today's little discovery may well be an absolute heap of bollocks of a "song", but my dears! The video is divine....
