Guess what?

Another weekend hoves into view...

...and it would have been the peerless Betty White's birthday today! We miss her. But, this is no time to be sad, it's time to party! And...

...Thank Disco It's Friday!

A classic.

Music catch-up, final part(y)

The third (and final; for now) of my little musical "catch-ups" is all about dance - and in particular, the work of one man: Mr Dave Audé!

You can keep your Avicii, your Pharrell, Calvin Harris and Tiesto, this man is consistently the most uplifting of all the "remixers-du-jour". And here are just a few examples from the summer of 2014 of his work, that have made me smile and shake my booty (admittedly somewhat wheezily these days)...

He even made that Disney schmaltz-fest Let It Go sound good:

And, finally, his collaboration with a lady who I only name-checked yesterday - the lovely Luciana:

That's got me in the mood for a party - in Amsterdam!

New Musical Excess

It's 2014, dear reader - Happy New Year!

As we slowly recover from last night's annual melée that is the Dolores Delargo Towers NYE party, it is time, methinks, to recall some of the musical highlights of the year that was...

We had many great musical nights out during 2013 - A Chorus Line, The Tailor-Made Man, Mile High - the Musical, The Supreme Fabulettes supporting Leslie Jordan, Marianne Faithfull, Merrily We Roll Along, Brian Ferry at Proms in the Park, Eve Ferret and Hazel O'Connor, and Top Hat among them.

However, the year in music really belonged to one man. Surprising the world (as he inevitably does), our icon Mr David Bowie returned to the limelight in January after a decade away, with a new single Where Are We Now? - a prelude to his absolutely brilliant album The Next Day:

As excellent as that comeback trip was, it was the title track of the album that I think really did it for me (as featured here in May)...

...and (needless to say), I will remember the stunning tribute exhibition David Bowie is... for the rest of my life!

Speaking if surprising musical resurrections, our beloved Pet Clark really astounded the critics with her Cut Copy Me single and marvellous album Lost in You (featured here back in March) - and one of the best events of the year was seeing her live in October. Here's the single:

But what of the rest? It wasn't such a bad year for newer music, either...

I first highlighted the superb single I Could Be The One by Avicii vs Nicky Romero way back in January, and lo and behold the benighted music-buying yoof agreed - this was one of the biggest dance songs of the year:

Speaking of mega-hits of the year, it was in February that I first picked up on the fab'n'shouty I Love It by Icona Pop featuring Charlie XCX, and the rest is history, as it dominated early summer in the UK:

Mention "shouty", and of course we have to mention our beloved Luciana! In June 2013, she teamed up with the gayest-of-in-yer-face-gays Cazwell to knock the spots off the opposition:

A completely contrasting singer who I really adored during 2013 is the marvellously camp Miss Caro Emerald. Featured here in August, here's her anthem for my life, it's Liquid Lunch:

We also welcomed back an old favourite in August, the singer formerly of the mega-kitsch Bear Force One, now calling himself Circuit21, and his version of gay 80s standard Love In The Shadows:

Our very own superstars the Pet Shop Boys had a rather good renaissance in 2013 with the fab album Electric, and a clutch of great singles from it. Here, from June, is my fave - Axis:

It was quite a year for our favourite sexy houseboys Kazaky, too! They featured here not once, not twice, but three times - in August it was their exhortation to Touch Me (yes, please!) and in October It Doesn't Matter; but it was their protest song against the creeping repression of gays in Russia and their native Ukraine (from April), Crazy Law that really was the business!

Princess Kylie, on the other hand, had a less memorable year. In 2013 she not only signed to Jay-Z's management firm Roc-Nation (gawd help us! - the home of bloody Rihanna, MIA and Rita Ora) and split with her gorgeous boyfriend Andrés Velencoso, but her official single Skirt was in my opinion so unbearable it didn't even merit being featured here. Two side-projects with other artists, however, did - the very strange Whistle (with Icelandic experimental combo Múm, as featured here in March), and this rather lovely collaboration with Laura Pausini (from October), Limpido:

There were many contenders in 2013 for the title "catchiest song of the year", but Le Grind's I Was There (Where Were You?) from June was certainly one of them!

Many, too, are the contenders for "song of 2013". However, for me - and I make no apologies for featuring it here for a third time (first time was in October) - given the unhappy situation in Russia, and with the Sochi Winter Olympics almost upon us, it simply has to be the magnificent Xelle and Red Flag!

Let us look forward to another good year in music - roll on, 2014!

Dreaming of a Betty White Xmas

As always!

Once again, she shows the young 'uns (in this case Miley-fucking-Cyrus) how it's done...

And here she is (once again) winning the "battle of the broads" with our darling Luciana:

Lieder für heute

Another selection of some newer musical delights is in order today, methinks...

First up, those marvellous pioneers of 80s electronic music OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) are back with a new album (English Electric) and a fab single Dresden:

Regular faves here at Dolores Delargo Towers, those mad Melbourne-ites Parralox have a new single out, (featuring the rather cute Ryan Adamés), which has rather an early "house" feel about it - it's Silent Morning:

Helen Marnie, lead vocalist and mainstay of the uber-cool Ladytron, started a solo career in 2012. Here, from her debut album Crystal World, is the single The Hunter. I like it - it reminds me a little of Tears for Fears...

I am not usually known to be strangely drawn to "urban" shouty music, but once again the mere presence of the unbowed queen of dance music Luciana, in the estimable company of the horny gay bad boy Cazwell, makes this song irresistible - it's Guess What?:

Speaking of fierce dance divas, here's the glamazon Bex and her new song What You Are. She loves only gold...

From the dance music of today, let's go right back to the heady days of Studio 54 in the company of the utterly fabulous Le Grind and their drag-tastic new single I Was There (Where Were You?) It's simply divine, daaahlings!

And finally, continuing our countdown to Gay Pride on Saturday - who else could we choose to conclude this short, sharp collection but but the "Gay Pimp" himself Mr Jonny McGovern, with his anthem for Florida's "Gayest Weekend of All Time" (which took place this Spring), The Gayest Of All Time?

Enjoy, sweeties - and let me know your thoughts!

Levimuusika

I am way, way overdue sharing another selection of the newer music that I have located via the wonder of the interweb recently. And so without further ado, and in the words of the immortal Ida Barr, let's "pump up the wireless!"

Always sassy, always welcome - house favourite Luciana is back again, continuing her "world domination tour" with another new stomper - U B The Bass. Magnificently odd video, too!

Keeping up the beats, here's the artist known as Warren Nomi (no relation to the fantabulosa Klaus Nomi, to my knowledge), and his new disco-tinged dancefloor number The Rush:

He also sometimes goes by the name "Nomi Madness", and among his more arty projects is a rather fabulous video montage for this song, French Kisses - a slice of camp genius!

The artist occasionally known as Bimbo Boy, Dennis Alexis Hellström has recently formed a new musical outfit called Eurotix. Among the several tracks they have so far is this rather excellent track, Decadence. Very 80s!

Rather catchy indeed is the new collaboration between Armand Deluxe and a previously-featured artist here at Dolores Delargo Towers SirPaul - Touch Me is released on 21st April:

"You love the 70s but I'm a 90s bitch!" go the lyrics. To me, however, the newly released single (new for the UK, at least) by Icona Pop (featuring another vocalist we have featured here before, Charli XCX) sounds more than reminiscent of Plastic Bertrand's Ça Plane Pour Moi. No bad thing, of course - I Love It:

To compare and contrast, here's Mr Bertrand himself (well, not quite - the vocals were actually performed by the record's producer Lou Deprijck) from 1978:

Ready for some old-school gay porn? Well, who am I to refuse? - here's the Tom of Finland-inspired video by former-pornstar-turned-singer Mr Colton Ford for his new single Let Me Live Again, featuring at least one of Mr Ford's real-life boyfriends. The song itself is rather catchy and is apparently doing well in the US dance charts...

While we're at it, it's time for a bit of smutty kitsch drag methinks... Eternal thanks to the lovely Henry at Barbarella's Galaxy once again for this one - it's Willam Belli, Detox and Vicky Vox with their soon-to-be-a-classic Boy Is A Bottom:

And finally, the totty! Part protest song (against the anti-gay laws that are creeping in across Eastern Europe), part-porno video, our favourite houseboys Kazaky are back with their Depeche Mode influenced new song Crazy Law. Wiggle it, boys!

As always, enjoy, dears - and be sure to let me know what you think...

I rock your world with my cheesecake

It's another Betty White Day!

The oldest swinger of them all is 91 today. Bow down before her magnificence...

Nova muziko

Once again it is time for a burst of new or recent songs that have bubbled into my consciousness... Let's open proceedings with a truly fantabulosa song - the new (and much-lauded) single from the ever-lovely Kylie Minogue! The crowd went absolutely wild when she performed this with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Proms in the Park - it's the truly beautiful Flower. It is taken from The Abbey Road Sessions (preview here) which is out on 29th October:

And, if you are in the mood to take part in one of her videos (and you happen to use Twatter or Instagram, whatever that is, which I don't), here's Our Princess's message to her fans:
"We are so thrilled that fans all around the world are loving ‘Flower’ and Kylie’s directorial debut. We would love to put together a lyric video for everyone to enjoy.

To participate you need to post your images on twitter or Instagram accompanied by the hashtag #KylieFlower. If you would like to submit a video, no longer that 10 seconds, you can upload this to YouTube with the hashtag #KylieFlower.

The images and video can show the lyrics in any way – feel free to use your imagination! All images must be submitted by 9 October to be revealed on 25 October 2012."
So get miming!

On a much more dark and funky note, the latest collaboration by our Patron Saint of Oddballs, Miss Róisín Murphy is with Luca C and Brigante - Flash of Light. Needless to say, I love it!

Speaking of wonderful oddballs, the fierce ruling diva of dance Luciana is back! This time in collaboration with the Manufactured Superstars, here's a preview clip of her new one - Calling All The Lovers:

Another month, another Swedish electro-pop act (or so it seems)... This time it's the turn of Glorious Inc - who have added some throbbing basslines to an otherwise very Alcazar-esque choon, I Wanna Dance. The song may take a few more listens, but I just adore her shoes!

The song is absolute pap, but I couldn't resist featuring the new video for How to be a Heartbreaker by Marina and the Diamonds, for obvious reasons...

Rescuing the musical moment (if the video is somewhat bereft of man-flesh - instead we have some genuine Team GB gymnasts. Female. Damn.), it's a genuine club floor-filler by DJ Michael Woods and some woman who sounds spookily like the marvellous Nadia Ali of Iio, but is actually called Ester Dean:

I save the very best till last! Here's Wales' very own fantabulosa Bright Light Bright Light with his new uplifting handbag-house-trippy single Feel It, featuring the incredible tonsils of Broadway singer Mykal Kilgore (yes! It's a male diva!) and a tongue-in-cheek video featuring a surprise appearance by Scissor Sisters' Del Marquis - what more could you need? This is absolutely brilliant!

As ever, enjoy - and let me know what you think...

Music à la mode

Time again for some more newer music that has caught my ear...

As the sunshine today makes us dream of Summer, so our first number is most appropriate. Insanely catchy - in fact just insane - this dancy number Skirts by Leeds-based "Brit-electro" band The Other Tribe does bring to mind pleasant thoughts of bopping in the middle of a field. The herald of another "Summer of Love", perhaps..?

Our own favourite Willy - Mr Young - has a new single, Losing Myself, due out on 18th March. The video is brilliant, and I can't wait to hear some remixes of the song...

Now here's a novel discovery - the most bizarre-looking Scandinavian dance diva Cazzi Opeia and her remarkably catchy My Heart in 2:

The Noughties' answer to the Beastie Boys, LMFAO have released the video for their latest single Sorry for Party Rocking, and it is another phantasmagorical epic - love it!

Among the teasers for her new album MDNA that Our Glorious Leader Queen Madge has been popping out this week, my personal favourite (appropriately enough) is the darkly electro Gang Bang. I can't wait for the album!

And finally, house favourite fierce rulin' diva here at Dolores Delargo Towers Luciana has a new single coming out. Her last smash Jump (with the Cube Guys) remains one of our anthems - and who can forget her collaboration with Betty White?. This time returning to her earlier partnership with Bodyrox, also featuring Chipmunk, and starring Boo the blue Staffie, it's Bow Wow Wow!

As always, enjoy! [As ever, let me know your thoughts.]

Speaking of Luciana...

Hot of the presses is the first prediction of a smash hit for 2012!

The great musical round-up 2011

OK, It's that time of year when all thoughts turn to trying to remember what music "rocked our boats" during the last twelve months.

To that end, here are (in no particular order) the Dolores Delargo Towers Top Twenty Songs of 2011!

Let us open with the very cool Eastman ft Neve - Greedy Eyes, from July:

Even cooler, Jessica 6 - White Horse, from March:

Herr Styler - Snow in Paris was toast of the town here at the Towers in January:

The beautiful Sound of Arrows - Nova, first featured here in April:

A very welcome return for a gay pioneer, Darren Hayes - Black Out The Sun (here in its remixed form), from September:

Speaking of gay, gay, gay - the anthem that never was, Sir Ari Gold featuring LaBelle's Sarah Dash - Sparkle, featured here in September:

Duran Duran - Girl Panic was a fantabulosa return to form for a long-standing favourite group in November:

Continuing the theme of "welcome returns", Mari Wilson - O.I.C, released earlier in the year, was a discovery here in December:

Not something I am proud of, but I still love Selena Gomez - Love You Like A Love Song, from September:

The sleaze-tastic Traci Lords - Last Drag, from November:

A song that was shockingly ignored by everyone, Beth Ditto - I Wrote the Book, from February:

For once my taste and that of the great unwashed collided, as Example - Changed the Way You Kiss Me became the big chart-topper of the summer, featured here first in March:

A chart could not really be a chart without at least one from the UK's "great white hope": Adele - Rolling in the Deep, as featured here way back in January:

One of my fave discoveries of the year, The Young Professionals ft Uriel Yekutiel - D.I.S.C.O, from July:

The magnificent Will Young - Jealousy, returned to our arms in style in August:

A song (and an artist) that is indeed very popular round here, Eric Saade - Popular, who wuz robbed at Eurovision in May:

Speaking of "we wuz robbed", our own Euro-contender Blue - I Can, was first revealed here in March:

A close contender, and thus in the Top Three, is Martin Solveig ft Dragonette - Hello, featured here in January:

Snapping at the heels of the top slot is the anthem of our last holiday in Spain: Luciana - I'm Still Hot, which I first played on our return in February but seems to have been around for the whole year (including the infamous Betty White version):

And finally, there has to be a winner, and so at Number 1 is (of course) the irresistible Sak Noel - Loca People, which first featured here in September, and has been buzzing round our eardrums ever since:

There will be plenty of omissions, and songs that have completely slipped the memory no doubt, but that is the nature of any Top Twenty.

However, as always, enjoy!!

Guess what?

It's here!

At last - the video for the long-promoted collaboration between Luciana and Betty White...

Hot, indeed!

Viva la Musica

It's time once more for a little update on the choons that have caught my attention of late!

And we open with what promises to be the next mega-smash across the world - the duet between the coolest of cool club girrrls Luciana (who I have featured here many times), and none other than the all-round-icon Miss Betty White!! I can't wait for the video, but here's the song...

It's not often that The Guardian becomes a source of inspiration in my eternal quest for new musical discoveries, but their recent feature on the exotically-named Zola Jesus and her forthcoming album Conatus certainly piqued my interest. And so it came to pass I discovered this slice of fabulosity - here's the magnificent Night from last year's Stridulum EP:

Next up, a rather classy little electro number by a fabulous band called Monarchy:

Moving up-tempo for a moment and towards club totty, here's one from DJ Tiesto (now confusingly calling himself Allure), with On The Wire, featuring the estimable - ahem - vocal talents of the rather cute Christian Burns:

And finally, this one I discovered courtesy of Gaydar Radio, and I was hooked straight away! Hilariously tongue-in-cheek, the latest from self-proclaimed "bad boys" LMFAO (incidentally the son and grandson of Motown record label founder Berry Gordy) has an equally sharp video - yes, boys and girls, I'm Sexy and I Know It:

As ever, enjoy!

Smash Hits!

I am well overdue sharing another selection of more current music that has caught my ear - however I have separately featured the new singles from both Tina Charles and Kate Bush this week, so what else is out there? [Just don't ask me to mention Beastie Boys or GaGa!]

Here's a woman who could rip Gaga's head off and spit down her neck... A mere three months after I began to rave about this song, here's the fantabulosa Luciana with the official video for I'm Still Hot!

With a distinctly OMD sound and a rather odd "Olympics-meets-Gladiator" themed video (complete with rather well-filled Speedos!), here's the new single from Cut Copy:

Next up, something that is completely off-the-wall - Danish group When Saints Go Machine and the haunting video for their new single...

A charming (and amazingly catchy) new single from Metronomy (all the way from Totnes), with a video featuring what looks suspiciously like hand-knitted seagulls:

This last video is completely beyond all comprehension! The song is mesmerising, though... Prepare yourselves for the San Francisco art project NewVillager:

Enjoy!

I am what I play

This is becoming a regular feature here at Dolores Delargo Towers! Here's another round-up of the videos and music that caught my attention this week...

To kick off, the very welcome return of the BIG lady with the BIG attitude, Miss Beth Ditto! This is fabulous:

Speaking of girls with attitude, this incredible dance number was never off the airwaves while we were in Spain - Luciana, we love you!

Changing the mood completely... I never ever tire of the adorable (and completely barking mad) Miss Róisín Murphy! Here she is collaborating with Aussie band The Bullits on a most magnificent adaptation of the theme from cult TV favourite The Persuaders(!)

[Read my blog from 2008 for more fabulous 1960s TV themes]

Now this next video is a little gem that really cheered me up! Courtesy of our chums over at The Hospital Club. With a fabby Blue Peter-style video and irresistibly catchy hook, here's Frankie and the Heartstrings...

Eternal thanks once more to the lovely Henry and his new-found enthusiasm for posting the weird and the wonderful in his very own Barbarella's Galaxy. This delightful electro choon by Pshycotic [sic] Beats featuring one of our major patron saints Bette Davis is very much in the genre that we call "our kind of music" here at Dolores Delargo Towers - I love it!

And finally, from the diva to the nightmare. This rather spooky little video for a haunting song is definitely worth a mention - earlier this week, Doorway by Planningtorock got into my head and refused to leave...
