Flying the Flags

We're only a few weeks away from the biggest event this country has seen in decades!

No, not the Coronation - the Eurovision Song Contest (being held in Liverpool)!!

For no particular reason other than I want to, here are just fifteen of my personal favourites from the world's largest, shinest and campest music festival (now in its 67th year)...

The Eurovision Song Contest final will be held on 13th May 2023.

I can't wait!

Would you like something to suck on for landing, sir?

The countdown has begun...

After its planned mega-celebration of 65 years of the Eurovision Song Contest was unceremoniously cancelled last year thanks to the pandemic, it's scheduled to go ahead as normal [as "normal" as the world's biggest, campest, most OTT musical event could ever be!] this year, with the grand final this Saturday in Rotterdam.

Once again, we have had to put any plans for our usual house party on ice [we're not even doing a Zoom call, as the consensus is that it really doesn't work when our fifteen-strong gang want to chat and watch telly at the same time], but to make up for it, let's shake ourselves out of the usual start-of-the-week doldrums in the most appropriate fashion.

On this Tacky Music Monday, it's one of our favourite UK Song Contest entries ever...

(This is your captain speaking)
(I'd like to welcome you aboard this Eurovision flight)
(The duration will be three minutes exactly)
(Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight)

Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada... (Duty free, madam?)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada...

We're flying the flag
All over the world
Flying the flag for you

London to Berlin
All the way from Paris to Tallinn
Helsinki on to Prague
Don't matter where we are
Yeah yeah yeah...

Flying high in Amsterdam
Why don't you catch us if you can?
(Catch us if you can)
Now we're cruising in the sky
And we're singing it for you

Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada... (Some salted nuts, sir?)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada...

We're flying the flag
All over the world
Flying the flag for you
(Would you like a complimentary drink with your meal, sir?)

We're flying the flag
All over the world
Flying the flag for you

(Ladies and gentlemen, your exits are here, here and here)
(To fasten your seatbelt, insert the fitting)
(To use the life vest, slip it over your head)
(Pull firmly on the red cord and blow into the mouthpiece)

Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada... (We wish you a very pleasurable journey)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
Babada babada... badada babada...
Babada babada...

We're flying the flag
All over the world
Flying the flag for you

We're flying the flag (Yes, we're flying)
All over the world (Take you all around the world)
Flying the flag for you
(Would you like something to suck on for landing, sir?)

We're flying the flag (Yes, we're flying)
All over the world (Take you all around the world)
Flying the flag for you
(We'd like to thank you for flying with us today)

I'm singing along (and doing all the actions) as we speak!

Have a good week, dear reader...

[Happy birthday, Baby Steve!]

It's quite theatrical

We're off to Sweden later [not literally, more's the pity], for the 61st Eurovision Song Contest [I am busy this morning dressing Dolores Delargo Towers with flags and bunting as we speak...]!

With its peculiar slogan - rather reminiscent of a contraceptive commercial - "Come Together", the contest - which last year alone had 200 million viewers - is for the first time being shown in America:
"Eurovision is a cultural phenomenon we have admired from afar for years," cable TV channel Logo general manager Chris McCarthy said. "We are thrilled to bring the event to U.S. audiences and cheer alongside the rest of the world."
For the uninitiated (and, unlike Australia, where fans have been going wild for Eurovision for years, there will be plenty in the States where it is never usually shown), CNN has provided a handy guide that includes this rather understated description:
It's quite theatrical. Think the Oscars, Grammys, Tony Awards, "American Idol," "The X Factor" and "America's Got Talent" all rolled into one - and then triple that.
Hilarious! Yet true.

And now, the Gallery...

More of the same tonight, please!!

Flying the flag, indeed!

In the battle of the mediocre, the ludicrous, the camp and the inappropriate, camp wins yet again!

The (slightly ageing) re-formed novelty band Scooch scooped the votes in tonight's "Making Your Mind Up" programme on BBC1, to represent Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest this May with their instantly hummable song Flying the Flag (For You).

With their bizarre costumes (trolly-dollies!), perma-tanned to the point of resembling leatherette, and with possibly the cheesiest song since the Vengaboys' eye-watering Boom Boom Boom, I Want You In My Room, the two girls and two boys camped it up to the point that the audience were gobsmacked!

Yet they are the best thing we could have hoped for - a revival of what Eurovision is really all about.: good old-fashioned Europop nonsense (and none of that cod-rock and posturing of the likes of last year's winners Lordi!).

Even the cynical alt-gay crowd watching the contest on the big screen in the Retro Bar off the Strand couldn't resist giving this particular cliched performance their own vote of the night!! (Despite the protestations of landlady Wendy...)

Go, Scooch, Go!! And let's look forward to a bit of a better score at this May's contest...
