Fill my heart with song, and let me sing for ever more

Grrr. Monday again, and to make the mood even more sombre than usual we are greeted by sad news - the genius that was Quincy Jones has departed (at the venerable age of 91) for that great Montreux Festival in the sky.

He worked with just about everybody in the business in a career that spanned 70 years, from Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie, to Anita O'Day, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan and Lena Horne, to Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Patti Austin, James Ingram, Diana Ross, Brothers Johnson, George Benson and even Amy Winehouse.

His collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Count Basie were regarded as the pinnacle of their recording careers, not least for this:

A masterclass in how to arrange a song around a singer - his complete revision of Noël Coward's classic paean to unrequited love; a gift for the diva Dinah Washington:

His work in the Disco era and beyond (that made him such a fortune, courtesy of Michael Jackson's massive-selling Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad albums) also saw Quincy step out from behind the scenes to gain a few hits of his own, including this one:

A few decades later, and a certain toothy 1960s spy gave Mr Jones's very first single back in 1962 a new lease of life, to huge success:

And finally, no - I haven't forgotten that it's a Tacky Music Monday, nor the (surprising) fact that one of Mr Jones's earliest ventures into the big time was as the producer of the archetypal purveyor of tearful teen ballads, Miss Lesley Gore!

RIP, Quincy Delight Jones Jr. (14th March 1933 – 3rd November 2024)

Somebody told me that his name was Bill

Monday again...

Typical, isn't it? We in the UK had searing 32C heat on Friday. All weekend while I was home, it's been grim - cold, wet and miserable. Today, it's sunny once more - just in time to go back to the grind...

Hey ho, on with the celebrations.

Sharing her day with a raft of not-otherwise-connected "names" such as the glorious (and dearly missed) Olympia Dukakis, Errol Flynn, Mickie Most, Anne Murray, Lionel Richie, Nicole Kidman, Martin Landau, Brian Wilson [80 today], Wendy Craig, Jacques Offenbach, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Lillian Hellman, John Goodman, Stephen Frears, and - erm - Jean-Marie Le Pen...

...it's the 75th birthday today of The Crystals long-term lead singer Miss Dolores "La La" Brooks!

On this Tacky Music Monday, we have a whole cavalcade of Divas joining forces to pay tribute to the lady's greatest hit with the band - Martha Reeves, Lesley Gore, Mary Wells, Shirley Alston, Freda Payne, Brenda Lee, Ronnie Spector, Belinda Carlisle and Grace Slick!

That's what I call a line-up..!

Have a good week, dear reader.

We didn't own her

"I think the record industry, by and large what's left of it, is still totally homophobic. I think it's much less so in the film industry now, but the record industry, it's always been a man's world."

"I didn't disappear; I started writing songs and worked behind the scenes."

"I just kind of lived my life naturally and did what I wanted to do."

"I think that in many ways, gays are behind women and behind blacks, as far as rights go. But I always say, if you know one of us, it's hard to hate us."

Lesley Gore, archetypal 60s "girl singer" and latterly an out-and-proud lady lesbian and campaigner, has died. She really cornered the market in "teen-angst" songs in her day - not least the marvellous You Don't Own Me. At least now we know what she was really singing about. It wasn't boys...

RIP Lesley Sue Gore (née Goldstein, 2nd May 1946 – 16th February 2015)

Brighter than a lucky penny

[Photos from the gardens at Dolores Delargo Towers]

Back to work today after the most magnificent long party weekend, and guess what? We're due the hottest, sunniest day of the year so far. Sigh.

Here's a suitably cheerful song for the day:

Enjoy!

Bizarre artworks, gay history and hats

It's our Blogger friend Thombeau's birthday today!

As I eulogised the man back in January:

"Thombeau is possibly the most prolific blogger I have ever encountered. From my first discovery of the rarified delights of the now defunct Planet Fabulon, and the more recently closed Chateau Thombeau, I realised I was not alone in my obsession with Hollywood and showbiz divas, vintage photography, peculiar foreign television programmes, bizarre artworks, gay history and hats!"

His current blog projects are most diverse, and include the esoteric form is void, an the magnificently camp Redundant Variety Hour.

By way of a birthday gift to a most inspirational man, here are a few videos I believe are appropriate...

Many happy returns, sweetie!

"Nobody gets more applause than Catwoman!"

Even Bank Holiday Mondays can be tacky! Today there's a neat coincidence, too - for yesterday was the 64th birthday of none other than Miss Lesley Gore, purveyor of bad bubblegum pop.

So what better to feature than this wonderfully kitsch little vignette from her appearance (alongside the marvellous Miss Julie Newmar) in Batman?
