Welcome to this business we call show
Too soon, the weekend is over and we're heading back to the tedium of the office... It's been a busy weekend: dodging the miserable weather, marching through London (more on that later), and trying to get our new computer to recognise all the bits and pieces I cannibalised from the old one (yes, I'm a geek).
Hey ho - to put a smile on our faces on this Tacky Music Monday, let us take a trip back to the Tony Awards of 1970, and enjoy our birthday girl Betty Bacall triumphally singing the show-stopper from her award-winning show Applause - Welcome to the Theatre:

How do you describe a legend?
It's Miss Lauren Bacall's 88th birthday today!
The lady herself prefers not to be called a "legend", despite the fact that the term seems to have been coined for her. For how else do you describe one of the greatest survivors of that Golden Era of Hollywood?
I have featured some of Miss Bacall's shining moments before - notably here, and I have no doubt featured this clip before.
However, some things are just too fantabulosa not to have a repeat airing, so here is the lady herself camping it up in "the gay bar scene" from Applause (the musical adaptation of All About Eve) - enjoy!

Nothing I know brings on the glow like sweet applause
Many happy returns today to one of the few remaining composers from the classic era of musicals - the 83-year-old Charles Strouse.
With a back catalogue of Broadway productions that includes Bye Bye Birdie, Golden Boy, Nick & Nora and of course the timeless classic Annie, as well as numerous revues for stars such as Chita Rivera, film soundtracks for Bonnie and Clyde and The Night They Raided Minsky's, and standards such as Once Upon a Time and Born Too Late, he certainly has a track record to be proud of!
Not least for this, in my opinion his campest meisterwork:
Applause, written by Mr Strouse, Betty Comden and Adolph Green with Lauren Bacall in mind, is of course a musical adaptation of every queen's favourite Bette Davis movie All About Eve. A delight...

Just purse your lips and blow...
There are many people who are described as a "legend" these days, but there is only one Lauren Bacall...
One of Hollywood's most stunning actresses, who celebrated her 85th birthday yesterday, Miss Bacall set the movie screens alight on her debut in 1944 in To Have and Have Not when she smouldered the infamous line "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow."
From that moment on, the studios and the hot-blooded fans queued up to pay homage to the former Betty Joan Perske and a star was born...
Seven decades (and about seventy movies) later the diva is still working, with three films in production just this year, and remains one of the most beautiful women on the silver screen. Many happy returns to the lady who defines what it is to be "a legend".
