Baby look at me and tell me what you see

Heavens! "Coco" from Fame is 60 years old!

As we crawl from our beds out into the daylight, blinking and complaining, on this Tacky Music Monday let's lift the mood somewhat with one of the lady's most extraordinary performances, ever...

That cheered me up!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Many happy returns, Irene Cara (born Irene Cara Escalera, 18th March 1959)

Dangerous levels of irritation

A train had to be held in a station while a group of dangerously annoying drama students were removed, it has emerged.

The students were identified after passengers reported seeing bellends singing show songs and gesturing lavishly, clearly with the intention of making people look at them.

Rail staff subsequently decided it would be unsafe for the train to continue on its two-hour journey with dangerous levels of irritation on board.

Commuter Nikki Hollis said: “If I’d had to listen to how ‘Hamlet is a seriously awesome play’ all the way to Bristol I might have smashed a window and hurled myself to my death.

“That and them doing strange poses in the aisle which looked as if they were rehearsing, but were actually just them showing off.”

Railway manager Stephen Malley said: “Drama students on public transport are a menace to themselves and others. Mainly others.

“If you see someone wearing a hat with a feather in or conspicuously doing vocal exercises, do the responsible thing and tell a member of staff.”

The service was delayed for 45 minutes while the students were ushered onto the platform, where they began prancing around and singing bits of Chicago.

Of course.

Speaking of which...

Baby, look at me and tell me what do you see?

The week finally draws to an end, and I'm getting my leg-warmers and tights at the ready - for today is the original Coco Hernandez's birthday!

Here's Miss Irene Cara (for it is she), dressed as some kind of Disco Chicken, in a really bizarre video for her immortal anthem for the "talent show generation" - Fame (I'm Gonna Live Forever). All, together, now...

Baby, look at me and tell me what do you see?
You ain't seen the best of me yet
Give me time, I'll make you forget the rest
I've got more in me, and you can set it free
I can catch the moon in my hand
Don't you know who I am?
Remember my name

(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly (High)
I feel it coming together
People will see me and cry
(Fame) I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame
(Fame) I'm gonna live forever
Baby, remember my name
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)
(Remember, remember, remember, remember)

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Here as I watch the ships go by

Heavens.

Bruno Martelli appears to have been elected Canadian Prime Minister!

Here as I watch the ships go by
I'm rooted to my shore
I keep asking myself why
And if there's more on the other side
Here as I see the friends I thought I made
A little bit crazed and knowing now
We've outgrown one another

Star maker
Dream breaker
Soul taker
We're happy now

Now when I see the things I want
I can take the things I see
But I keep asking myself why
And if there ain't just a little bit more for me
Here when it's time to count the cost
I keep measuring what I've lost
And wondering if you knew
It would all end up with you

Star maker
Dream breaker
Soul taker
We're happy now
Here as I watch the time go by
How I'd like to sail away
Leaving all my past behind
But I know I'd only last for a couple of days
Here stands everything I thought I made
It's the only life I know
And I can't even call it my own
I've got no hope, I belong to you

My star maker
Dream breaker
Soul taker
We're happy now
We're so happy now

Lydia, oh Lydia

Amazingly, the lovely Debbie Allen ("Lydia" the dance teacher in the TV series Kids from Fame) celebrates her 60th birthday today!

I loved this show back in the 80s - gawd only knows how embarrassing it would be to watch it nowadays, but I still get a tingle when I hear the theme tune...

The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice

Coco Hernandez: [the girls are fighting over Leroy]
"You know what they say? The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice."
Hilary van Doren: "Yes, but who wants diabetes?"

Amazingly it is five years to the day since the death of Gene Anthony Ray, most famously known as Leroy in both Fame the movie and the TV series.

Always the "naughty boy", on screen and off, Leroy was THE dancer amongst the Kids. With his ultra tight shorts and cheeky smile, I had a massive crush on him in what I continually refer to as my "wilderness years" before I came out!

Unfortunately the adage "Fame Hurts" proved to be all too true for Gene. Drink and drugs played a huge part in his life, and after he was sacked from the TV show for continually turning up late for recordings he never attained that level of success again, struggling to get parts in music videos and commercials.

Never out nor "outed", he sadly died very young (he was only 41) of a stroke. It was implied, but never proved, that his early death was as a result of complications of being HIV+. And in his obituaries, it was observed "he never married".

A sad end for a beautiful man.
