The good thing is in your past

Grrrr. Back to the grind it is, then...

Still coming down to earth after the feast for the senses that was Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday [more on that later, no doubt], I am most definitely not in the mood for another five days of mundanity...

...on this Tacky Music Monday, only Mama Cher can save us now!

Thought for the day: did the Osmonds actually have penises? Can't see one.

Have a good week, dear reader.

Someone, help me, help me, help me please

Oh dear, time to feel old again... My childhood crush, the toothsome Donny Osmond is sixty years old today!

I was nine when I sat, entranced, in front of Top of the Pops, crying over this one...

Times have changed.

Too young? Not any more...

Many happy returns, Donald Clark "Donny" Osmond (born 9th December 1957)!

Puts you there where things are hollow

For a change, the fact that it's Monday again is of no great significance to me, being off work with the broken foot and all.

However the start of any week must still be celebrated with glitz'n'glitter, as is traditional here at Dolores Delargo Towers...

What more glittering - and tacky - could you want this Tacky Music Monday than a double bill [I spoil you, dear reader!] of the pearly-white-teeth-led eye-popping "entertainment" that was provided by The Donny & Marie Show?

First up in this cringeworthy mélange is my childhood crush [I know, I know!] Donny, dressed in an illuminated cape to die for, and his own "tribute" to the most influential musician of all time Mr David Bowie! [To his credit, he doesn't completely massacre it...] Here's Fame:

[2019 UPDATE: the video has gone from the interwebs, but Donny posted a 15-second clip on his Instagram]

And what would a Donny & Marie Show be without a suitably overstuffed-with-guests finale? [Made even more bewildering by the fact that I have no idea who Roy Clark or George Gobel actually are/were.] Worth watching from 3.11 alone for a fab appearance by none other than Charo!

Space. The final frontier. Indeed.

Have a good week, peeps!

PS in case the profusion of members of "Utah's First Family" causes any confusion, help is at hand: Behind the Teeth: Know Your Osmond. [2024 UPDATE: gone from the interwebs]

Jumpsuit Heaven

As dear ol' Cher announces the cancellation of the rest of her (final, final, final) tour due to health issues, let us wallow for a time on this Tacky Music Monday with a "classic" moment from her 70s TV show.

Bring on The Osmonds (and check out the matching outfits...)!

Come and meet those dancing feet

Another weekend whizzes out of our conciousness, and it's time to get cracking and off to the office. Joy of joys. At least we have our Xmas dose of Polari to look forward to tonight...

Meanwhile, let us satisfy our yearning for all things kitsch on this Tacky Music Monday, with something truly, amazingly naff! It's today's birthday boy (and my childhood heartthrob - I was a child, I knew no better) Donny Osmond, with sister Marie in their terrible 70s TV show (with guest star Sherman Hemsley, who was apparently famous in America for something or other) and their colourful rendition of 42nd Street...

Even if it only wakes you up enough to throw things at the screen, my work is done.

Have a great week, as best you can, folks!

Oh, the horror...

We're hardly halfway through November and already the dreaded Festering Season has taken over - the shops are a slew of cheap crap tinsel and unfunny cards (although I have so far yet to hear a piped version of Cliff Richard or Slade through a PA system, thankfully), the heteroids are starting to look grimmer than usual as they try and steer their screaming progeny away from the latest wildly expensive "must-have" gadgets and toys filling the shelves, and the musical bandwagon has already started in earnest, as faded former stars start to team up for their tearful Xmas collections, including these...

Rod Stewart has released his first-ever seasonal album Merry Christmas, Baby, featuring a series of duets including Michael Buble on Winter Wonderland.

The formerly cool Cee-Lo Green, not content with also appearing on Mr Stewart's Xmas album, has decided to inflict one of his own on us called CeeLo’s Magic Moment which features duets with The Muppets and Christina Aguilera. I don't know how you'd be able to tell them apart. Possibly by smell.

Just when you thought it was safe, Donny Osmond and Susan Boyle are to release their saccharine duet This Is The Moment from her new album Standing Ovation. My ears are beginning to bleed, but there's more...

As succinctly reviewed by Mike at Pop Trash Addicts, Spice Girls Emma Bunton and Melanie C "have joined forces to record an insanely tragic cover of I Know Him So Well...you need a big voice to pull it off and these sad bitches can barely hold a note between them."

And as if the tragi-comedy couldn't get any more horrifying, none other than "not gay at all" John Travolta and his unfeasibly odd hair have teamed up with the heavily Polyfilla-ed Olivia Newton John for an album of "classics" This Christmas. I've just puked in the mince pies...

Suffice to say I won't be buying any of them.

Roll on January.

Bah Humbug.

I Like Plastic

The seven inch single is officially sixty years old this month, and that news set me thinking about early record purchases.

Way back in about 1973, my parents gave me a Dansette for Xmas - allegedly a portable record player, although I recall it weighed a ton (all those valves!) - covered in fetching pink and white vinyl. How trendy. I thought it was fab at the time, and you could stack all your records up to play in turn (and scratch the surface of each).

As well as the inevitable Top of the Pops albums (1974's [pictured above] came complete with free calendar of some tart in a leopardskin bikini), they bought us kids such gems as Thank You Very Much for the Aintree Iron by Pinky & Perky, and O'Malley the Alley Cat from Disney's Aristocats cartoon.

But I was determined to buy my own music with my pocket money. And what was the first single I bought? This...

Good grief. However, at the time I was in love with Donny - the teeth, the hair, the velvet jackets. I was only ten years old, so I have the perfect excuse, honest, guv!
