Found wanting?

[click to embiggen]

Madam Arcati and I concluded our "choral triptych" - we saw Faure's Requiem in March, and Verdi's Requiem in June - at the Cadogan Hall last night, with the biggest and most OTT of the lot, William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast.

Famously, the piece requires a huge vocal ensemble (last night's production had two choirs - Epsom Choral Society and the Barnes Choir), and just about every instrument in the orchestral canon. Indeed, the renowned wit and esteemed conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (who was very sniffy about the work as it was about to receive its premiere) said to the young William Walton: "As you'll never hear the thing again, my boy, why not throw in a couple of brass bands?" So he did.

It's impressive, that's for certain, if not exactly my "cup of tea" either. It's based upon one of those dramatic Old Testament stories full of smiting: the Jews are in exile as slaves in Babylon and the tyrant Belshazzar commits sacrilege by taking their sacred vessels for his guests and concubines to use at a lavish feast, bringing damnation upon his head. It includes the original source of the phrase "the writing's on the wall" - "You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting." Belshazzar's subsequent death and the fall of his empire become the cause of great celebration for the Jews. Noisily.

It is, of course, another phrase from that original story [later repeated in one of the Psalms] that has become even more famous in popular culture - not least in this eternal classic. I couldn't possibly imagine two more polar opposite pieces of music - but hey, that's the way my mind works!

PS

It's France's greatest day of celebration, Le Quatorze Juillet (or Bastille Day)...

Full of ecstasy and fire

Relief is in sight - it's pay day, the skies are dazzling blue, we have a new trellis on the fence in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers, and the weekend's almost here...

In another to add to the long list of departures for Fabulon this week (see here and here), we bade a sad farewell to Herr Frank Farian. Who? I hear you ask.

Not only was Mr Farian one of the actual voices behind the "world's most famous mime act" Milli Vanilli, he was also the genius producer behind [literally - he also sang the male vocals, to which Bobby Farrell mimed] one of the biggest-selling bands in the UK ever, Boney M!

Although they sold gazillions of records in the glittering Disco era, they struggled to maintain the same level of success in the 80s and 90s and gradually faded out of view. Then suddenly in 2021, thanks to the machinations of a North London DJ and "eternally-bewitched-by-old-records" Tik-Tok users, this song became a hit all over again, in a slightly different form, with a splendidly daft video...

I'm crazy like a fool

It has been a real bind this week, dear reader - but at least we have a weekend in view to look forward to!

We are looking forward a visit from The Mother tomorrow, who, despite her frailty, will no doubt be critiquing our gardening skills. I don't think she'll find us wanting, I hope. 😁

Meanwhile, as it is indeed the time to stop thinking "spreadsheets" and start thinking "spangles and cocktails", let's wish many happy returns of the day to Miss Liz Mitchell - and Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, peeps!

Got to have a belief in

Woo-hoo! The weekend is almost here, it's pay day, Nectar is offering 30x points on eBay purchases for one hour this lunchtime (I have the timer set), and John-John and I are off to the cinema this evening to see Wakanda Forever.

I think we should start the party early, dear reader, with a song that was in our charts this week 45 years ago [gulp!]...

As I said when I featured it back in 2011:

Time enough to drag out the most inappropriate "showgirl" costumes, sequins and spangles to bop along to Boney M, with possibly the most bizarre song about a city that was at the time anything but sparkling, Belfast.

Running like the wind

Oh. Thank. Fuck.

After what has seemed on occasions over the last few few weeks to have been a "trial by fire" in work (with three people out of our small team of five on holiday for much of it, and those remaining - mainly me - having to deal with a load of difficult, unforeseen and complicated "urgent" situations as well as my own work and covering the tasks handed-over), it is finally payback time! At 4pm precisely, the whole lot can go to hell in a handbag as far as I care - I will be off for the next seventeen days, and it's their turn to suffer!

The UK's fabulous summer heatwave continues, we're off to see Tom Jones, Tom Jones in Essex this Sunday, we fly to our beloved Amsterdam on Thursday for a long weekend, and our gang's "Grand Picnic" is on the Bank Holiday weekend to follow.

I'm in the mood for a party!

To begin, an "Ibiza classic". This song is - gulp - twenty years old...

Very appropriate, given the weather.

Not content to leave it there, however - such is my mood - how about something that is considerably older? From 1979, it's (surprisingly) one of the biggest-selling bands in UK chart history:

Thank Disco It's (a Holi-Holiday) Friday!

Have a good weekend, dear reader.

Cool or fool?

These girls have got nothing on Bobby Farrell!

It's been a bit of a struggle to concentrate on work this week with the heat, but we're almost at the end, dear reader.

Tomorrow "our gang" will be heading into the heart of London, in support of the venerable gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and his "Reclaim Pride" march, so hopefully that'll be a fun as well as worthwhile day out (rain permitting)! But first, we need to organise the party...

I was thinking of wearing one of these outfits tomorrow, but I figured my head might get too hot in a kokoshnik, and a crop-top-cum-man-bra would emphasise my belly - so I'll leave that sort of thing to Marcia, Liz, Maizie and Bobby, and just Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, peeps!

Crazy like a fool

As we try and crank up the adrenaline in preparation for the start of another weekend, so we call upon the Ultimate Party Band to provide some apt music...

On this, lead singer Marcia Barrett's birthday, let us don our tightest white trousers and inappropriate levels of lurex, shake our tail feathers - and get spinnin' along with Boney M!

What about it, Daddy Cool?

Feliz?

It's the last weekend before the Festering Season festivities really kick in.

The last-minute scramble for shit gifts, the last desperate office parties; the time that fam-i-lees clog the supermarket aisles with trolleys full of enough food and booze to feed the whole of a small African nation.

And never forget, Boney M are not just for Xmas, they're for life!

Thank Disco It's Friday! Roll on New Year.

Diggin' all the sunshine

The UK continues to bask in an untypical stretch of hot sunny weather - actually in summer, for a change! - and it is forecast to be blazingly hot this weekend.

Hoorah!

To help inspire just what we might choose to wear while totty-spotting in the park or maybe on the beach this weekend, here's the typically understated Boney M (whose singer Liz Mitchell celebrates her birthday today) with another of their camp summer classics...

...and Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a fabulous weekend, whatever you do.

The dark days are gone, and the bright days are here

It's Le Weekend looming, and time for a traditional party celebration.

Who better to bring the much-needed glitter'n'tinfoil into our dingy little lives than the fabulous Boney M? - still, according to the latest chart sales figures, one of the most successful bands the UK (and the world) has ever seen - it's Sunny!

The biggest contribution to the peace process?

Another thrilling week staggers to its close.

Madam Arcati and I are off to a recording of Friday Night is Music Night tonight, and it looks like we have a typically crisp and sunny autumn weekend to look forward to. Time enough to drag out the most inappropriate "showgirl" costumes, sequins and spangles to bop along to Boney M, with possibly the most bizarre song about a city that was at the time anything but sparkling, Belfast!

Thank Disco It's Friday...

Have a good one!

There was a cat that really was gone

Way back in this month in 1978, an artificially created band made up of session musicians and dancers were in the process of conquering the music world. Boney M (for it is they) had already managed to enter the record books with their multi-million selling Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring at the turn of that year, and were about to achieve a similar best-selling hit with Mary's Boy Child at its end.

In-between, in September '78 they released this - which surely must be a contender for "catchiest song ever"...

Oh, those Russians.
