Come and feel my energy

Phew! Another busy week is dragging its heels - but the end in sight... Despite the fact it is Friday the Thirteenth (ooo-er!), it's still time for us to start letting our hair down, to get in the mood for a party...

...and have a bit of a "timeslip moment", to boot!

The USS Enterprise-D has deposited us three decades into the past, in the nexus of 1994 - the year of the Channel Tunnel, the IRA ceasefire, the Israel–Jordan peace treaty, Nelson Mandela and the final end of apartheid, the final end of the Cold War, Edwina Currie's support of the lowering of the age of consent for homosexual relationships to 16 which was rejected and followed by the passing of an amendment which made it 18, Fred and Rose West and the "House of Horrors" murders, the ordination of women priests, Silvio Berlusconi, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sunday trading, Ace of Base, the so-called "Sharongate" saga in EastEnders, President Clinton, the sinking of the MS Estonia in the Baltic Sea with 852 deaths, Prince Charles' confession on TV of adultery with Camilla (and Diana wearing that iconic "little black dress" on the same day), Schindler's List, peace in Angola, the arrival of Tony Blair as opposition leader, Russian invasion of Chechnya, Mrs. Doubtfire, the "cash for questions" affair, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the Britpop "war" between Oasis and Blur, Newt Gingrich, Pulp Fiction, the arrest of OJ Simpson for murder, the Sony Playstation, genocide in Rwanda, Wet Wet Wet's Love Is All Around being at #1 for 15 weeks, Serial Mom, civil war in Yemen, "Life is like a box of chocolates", and the Michael Jackson-Lisa Marie Presley freakshow wedding...

...the year Tom Daley, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, the National Lottery, Friends, Yahoo, AOL and Amazon were born; and the year Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Peter Cushing, Roy Castle, Burt Lancaster, Fanny Cradock, Cesar Romero, Telly Savalas, Labour leader John Smith, Henry Mancini, John Curry, Kurt Cobain, Cab Calloway, Dan Hartman, Stephen Milligan MP, Derek Jarman, Dennis Potter, Harry Nilsson, Ayrton Senna and Doris Speed all died.

It was also a peak year in "The Decade of Dance". So let's load the "Club Classics" cassette into the Walkman, and with not one, not two, but three classics from that very year - Thank Disco(?) It's Friday!!

First up, some noise [and I went mad for this when I first heard it!]:

...some trance:

...and, from this very week thirty years ago [EEK!], this!

Have a great weekend, dear reader!!

I'm alive, the man with the second face

Because of football, the media here in the UK (including the BBC and all the newspapers) have been going mad for reminiscences of 1996 [the last time the England national team came close to winning the European Championships; they're playing against Italy tonight in this year's final], so I thought I'd do an appropriate post...

Scary as it seems, dear reader, each and every one of these classic choons is a quarter-of-a-century old!

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS!! Where have they gone?

Take your brain to another dimension - pay close attention

Quite a shock. The raviest raver, The Scary Man of the 90s big-beat dance era, Keith Flint of the Prodigy has been found dead at the age of 49. [He had apparently been suffering with depression for many years.]

Among the man's achievements: with the Prodigy, he sold an estimated 30 million records worldwide; had the video for Firestarter banned from Top of the Pops for "scaring the kiddies"; caused huge controversy with the award-winning Smack My Bitch Up; had his distinctive "punk-rave" look made into a Hallowe'en costume; owned a champion motorcycle race team; and became the most famous person to come out of Braintree, Essex. Ever.

By way of a little tribute to Mr Flint, here's my favourite Prodigy single (and video)...

...and a double-helping of the group's ground-breaking "Acid House"/"Rave" moments:

Farewell, Keef! With you gone, the musical world becomes yet more anodyne than we would like...

I'm the bitch you hated, filth infatuated

Burning Guy Fawkes on your bonfire is so 1600s, but which of 2017’s many hate figures should you burn instead?

Check out our Mash guide:

Donald Trump
The obvious choice, effigies of Trump are easy to make at home because he already looks like clothes irregularly stuffed with newspaper, child’s gloves and a badly-sculpted papier-maché face. However the large amount of hay required to craft his hair could blow away once ignited and prove a fire risk.

Hillary Clinton
Could be considered passé, but still deserves ire for expecting to stroll into the White House like it was the family greengrocery business and then writing a whining, buck-passing book about it.

Jacob Rees-Mogg
Much as you should always check bonfires to ensure that children or hedgehogs are not hiding in them before lighting, always check any effigies of Jacob Rees-Mogg to ensure you are not inadvertently burning the genuine article.

Kim Jong-un
The man who threatens to turn the world into ashes deserves to be burned, despite the high probability that it’s all his dad’s fault for spoiling him. Fun and simple to construct: just pop a pair of glasses and poor man’s Elvis wig on an over-inflated balloon and you’re good to go.

A woman
If you’re holding a bonfire in an area of mixed political views, it can be difficult to choose an effigy that everyone agrees with. But whether you’re far-left or alt-right, everybody blames the ills of the world on women. One side can think it’s Angela Merkel, the other Laura Kuenssberg and everybody’s happy.

Harvey Weinstein
The Hollywood producer turned international sex abuse exposure catalyst should have been sitting atop bonfires for decades. A popular choice, but good luck getting it to the top of your bonfire without it being kicked to bits.

Adele
Has a £132 million fortune even though she is only 29. Burn the witch.

Of course.

Happy Bonfire Night, everyone!

There is really only one song to play now...

Twisted firestarter

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot!"

It's Bonfire Night.

What else to play...

...but Firestarter?!

The Prodigy. Of course.

I'm the bitch you hated, filth infatuated.
Yeah, I'm the pain you tasted, fell intoxicated
I'm a firestarter, twisted firestarter,
You're the firestarter, twisted firestarter.

A greetings card verse in the making, methinks...

Come play my game, I'll test ya

This made me wake up!

It is fifteen years since this practically perfect blend of punk/Goth attitude with rave/dance music was at the top of the UK charts - and it still makes me sit up and take notice today.

It is (of course) Breathe by the The Prodigy!

The image of a semi-naked Maxim Reality cavorting in practically nothing but his tattoos is an image forever etched on my libido...

Breathe the pressure
Come play my game, I'll test ya
Psychosomatic, addict, insane
Breathe the pressure
Come play my game, I'll test ya
Psychosomatic, addict, insane

Come play my game
Inhale, inhale, you're the victim
Come play my game
Exhale, exhale, exhale

Breathe with me

Psychosomatic addict insane

So Keith Flint of The Prodigy celebrates his 40th this week! A good enough excuse to get some big beats on for the weekend...

And to finish off this little Friday tribute - Ladies and Gentlemen, here's The Zimmers!

Happy Friday!!!
