Música pop

Remarkably, it's not such a huge gap between posts showcasing the "newer" music that has caught my ear of late.

Significantly not featured is that godawful rubbish that passes for the new Bond theme (not that I would ever feature that whining tit Sam Smith), nor Adele's new one (just too dreary, dear - and every time she sings "Hello", the world responds "Is it me you're looking for?" Obviously), nor anything by the latest boy-craze Years & Years (they have the misfortune of always reminding me of Lana del Rey. That's. Not. Good.). In fact, nothing that is any serious danger of getting into what laughingly passes for "the charts" these days...

Getting the serious(ish) stuff out of the way, it is Remembrance Day tomorrow (Her Maj and her politicos having already laid the wreaths at the official ceremony last Sunday). Here, remembering in appropriate fashion an even earlier conflict than those traditionally marked on this day (the Boer Wars in South Africa), here's Kid Kasio and the remarkable Kodo Song:

I must admit, the news that Our Princess Kylie is releasing a Christmas album left a bit of sick in my mouth. The announcement that she was duetting with "the poor man's Christopher Biggins" James Corden sent shivers down my spine... However, from that album, their cover of Yazoo's fantabulosa Only You (actually it's more a cover of the cover by The Flying Pickets, if truth be told) is not too unbearable:

Lightening the mood somewhat, our very favourite funksters du jour Le Grind have come up with the goods again... With (remarkably) a dance-off in a workmen's club, and a sassy dressing-down from Miss Reyna to boot (let's face it, who would mess with her?!), here's Pillow Talk:

This left-field little dance number - despite its singularly odd video - gets right under one's skin after a while. It's Catz 'n' Dogz and Get It Right. Indeed:

Speaking of catchy - how about (possibly) the world's first funky-chicken-puppet-dance number? Courtesy of Format:B, here's Chunky:

Terrifyingly, it is thirty-five years since Girls on Film rocketed the Durannies to stardom - and they show no signs of stopping! From their new album Paper Gods, here are the boys themselves, Duran Duran, with Pressure Off (featuring the lovely Janelle Monáe and that ever-so-busy-man Nile Rodgers):

One of our constant favourite electro-pop-meisters Little Boots should work in my office. She, unlike many people I encounter in the daily grind, knows how to Get Things Done!

And, finally... this one falls rather into the "so bad, it's good" category of low camp. It's not only a cover of the most unintentionally hilarious Hi-NRG band of the 80s Modern Talking's You're My Heart, You're My Soul, but it also features a (ahem) full-figured singer in an inappropriate space-peplum, the most second-rate rapper since the heyday of 2-Unlimited, some very bored hipster-queens in boas and somebody's aunties pretending to be robots. Could Lian Ross and Big Daddi be more tacky-tastic?!

As always, enjoy - and let me know what you think!

Nouvelles chansons

Being well overdue (again) for a little feature-ette on some of the "newer" music that has caught my attention lately, let's just get right on down to it...

Opening the show is one of our fave jolly entertainers, Miss Caro Emerald - who we will have the good fortune to be seeing live in September as she is on the line-up for Proms in the Park (alongside The Jacksons, Russell Watson, The Mavericks, Danielle de Niese and Beverley Knight). Usually known for a "Swing" style, her new song is, surprisingly, a sort-of-reggae number:

Those eternal fans of sparkly face-wear, the Divine Knights are back with a new single that is highly critical of their native Australia for its continued refusal to add gay equality to its agenda:

With a musical tribute to all things early 80s, here's a new one from "the Artist-formerly-known-as-Bimbo-Boy" Eurotix:

"It's so hot in here!", she sings. It's always hotter-than-hot when the fabulous funksters Le Grind [remember I Was There, Where Were You?] get going!

The very lovely Little Boots is back, with a new album Working Girl and, from it, this rather marvellous new single:

Ramping up the "summer dance quotient" a little is the ever-reliable Mr Martin Solveig, here teamed up with Miami DJ duo GTA and with a most weird video indeed - he's definitely Intoxicated:

And, finally - to quote Issy Sampson in the Guardian's "New Music" slot: "Just when you’ve resigned yourself to the fact that all music, for all time, will be Some Rubbish EDM ft Pitbull, Petite Meller comes along and bangs out the song of the summer." It is indeed fantabulosa!

As always, enjoy! And please let me know what you think...

Greetings, pop-pickers

It's been ages since I've compiled a selection of some of the newer music that I've discovered, so let's have a go...

Played on BBC Radio 2 - apparently for the first time - by Dave Pearce on his Dance Years show on Saturday (I was listening!) was Pet Shop Boys' newest single from their forthcoming "return to dance-pop" album Electric. Here's the fabulous Vocal:

And, just because I haven't mentioned it before, the Boys' most recent release Axis - and its video - is wonderful, too:

Speaking of music that I have completely omitted to mention before, how about the mega-over-hyped comeback of Daft Punk? Their world-beating Get Lucky featuring Pharrell Williams just spent four weeks at the top of our charts. It also (surprisingly) happens to be collaborator Nile Rogers' first Number 1 in the UK - so let's feature the (inevitable) mash-up with another of his classics, Good Times by Chic:

Back to the new...

Hailing from Rennes in Brittany, here's Juveniles with their rather good new single (somewhat reminiscent of OMD, methinks), Strangers - and a most bizarre video indeed:

Appropriately described as "shimmering flecked electro house", here's an excellent collaboration between music maestro Kris Menace and a vocalist calling himself Black Hills - Waiting For You:

A jaunty, funky little number, Only You Can Show Me by Goldroom crosses old-school disco and Ibiza house rhythms to create a likely summer hit, I reckon...

The lovely Little Boots continues her obsession with the darker side of discotheque with her new song Broken Record, and its roller-boogie-inspired video - I love it!

However if we really want kitsch, then... the latest outing for Steps support act Kamaliya [complete with samples from Puccini's Flower Duet, of all things] makes every effort, and succeeds, in producing a (very) Ukrainian impression of a Pepsi commercial - it's I'm Alive:

And finally, with an uplifting sound that harks back to the handover between Hi-NRG and Eurobeat dance music in the 1990s, Canadian popstrel Gali (and her dreadful hair extensions) got my glitterball spinning with her new wannabee anthem - coincidentally, the same title as Kamaliya's - I'm Alive:

As always, enjoy - and let me know what you think!

Euterpean joys

Time again for another selection of newer choons on the turntable here at Dolores Delargo Towers!

First up, it's weird one. Unfortunately apparently a favourite of that gross waste of human DNA Chris Moyles, nonetheless the bizarre Sam and the Womp and their soon-to-be-chart-topper Bom Bom appeal to my tacky music passions... It's fun! [Eternal thanks to "Houseboy Alex" for this one!]

Courtesy of my fave cult Mancunians Tingle in the Netherlands, here's a new band - their protégés, if one may use that term - it's Fantasy by Factory Acts. Shades of Siouxsie, methinks...

It seems like only yesterday that we were talking about a new Scissor Sisters single Only The Horses, and raving over their Pride anthem Let's Have a Kiki - and now here's another new one! With a spectacular video, the latest release off the Magic Hour album is Baby Come Home. This is quite something...

...as is the fabulous "spoof commercial" for the album - check out the Scissor Sisters website.

Speaking of small gaps between songs, here's the new official release from Pet Shop Boys, an appropriately-titled number for the forthcoming madness that is The Olympics - Winner. [Their recently promoted track Invisible was just a "taster" for the album Elysium apparently].

The Boys are taking part in the Olympics closing ceremony (alongside Queen, Take That, Annie Lennox, Spice Girls, Oasis, George Michael, Ray Davies, Madness, Emeli Sandé, Kaiser Chiefs and One Direction, among many many others), so we should forgive them a little "bandwagon-jumping", I suppose:

A rather fab find is this track by someone calling himself Strip Steve, and featuring Puro Instinct - it's the ethereal Astral Projection:

The star of the week, however, is the latest single from the lovely Little Boots - it's rather disco-tastic! And I am sure I have been to this club... Here's Headphones:

Enjoy the music - and let me know your thoughts!

Le pop nouvelle

It's that time again. On this, official Record Store Day, here is another selection of recent musical efforts that have come to my attention...

Now, I have never watched (and probably will never watch) RuPaul's Drag Race, but when the lovely Kevin (aka KDNA) at The Lisp blog posted this video by the very fierce contestant Manila Luzon, I just had to share! Enjoy some Hot Couture:

Shades of vintage Talking Heads permeate the new single from the synth-goddess Little Boots - and the male vocal sounds suspiciously like the lead singer of Azari & III (see my blogs here and here) so she's keeping up with the latest arrivals on the scene as well. The rather wonderful Every Night I Say A Prayer is released on collectable vinyl for Record Store Day (but in the meantime the Tensnake remix is available to download from Soundcloud):

Paying homage to the Goth/avant garde stylings of the likes of Siouxsie and Roisin Murphy, the enigmatic Miss Charlotte Hatherley aka Sylver Tongue (who I featured here only last month) has a new single Creatures coming out later this year...

On a jollier note, here's a catchy little number called Voodoo from a new Aussie diva wannabee called Giulietta (also available to download from Soundcloud - how do these people make any money?):

Like some manic theme tune to a 60s ITC spy show, Paris 2012 by mysterious French band La Femme, and its accompanying video, is rather brilliant:

And finally, I featured the new Scissor Sisters song Only The Horses (from their forthcoming album Magic Hour) in my last musical round-up - and now they have accompanied the single's release on 13th May with this quite stunning video... Breathtaking!

As ever, enjoy! Let me know your thoughts...

Pop-a-matic

Time once more for some of the newer songs I have discovered recently, that have grabbed my attention...

The BBC has just released the long-list of its annual "Sounds of..." series (a selection of new artists that their "panel of tastemakers" - whatever that may mean - has selected as tipped for success). Of the motley crew of fifteen chosen for 2012, no less than four are rappers and two are "dubstep", which loads the selection in a rather depressing direction. I shan't examine the list in detail as much of it is unlistenable, and I need to hear more of the likes of Lianne La Havas ("soul music" apparently) and Ren Harvieu before I can get into them.

However, of the tracks I have been able to listen to without screaming at the PC, the best of the bunch is by the moody Swedish band Niki and the Dove. The track the Beeb is pushing is over a year old, but rather fab (especially remixed, as here):

Following on from a prospective "Sound of 2012", here's the return of an artist who won the self-same BBC contest back in 2009 - it's the lovely Little Boots:

Speaking of very welcome returns, here with a new single (released earlier in 2011 admittedly) is an old favourite of ours at Dolores Delargo Towers, Miss Mari Wilson!

Miss Wilson just so happens to be a recent new exhibit in the Dolores Delargo Towers Museum of Camp - and, sans beehive, our lady's comeback is ably produced it seems by the rather fab BoiSoundsMusic, whose collaborations with the artist known as Him and the inimitable Dusty O I have previously featured (click the links). The resulting first single O.I.C. is really quite fantabulosa!

Suitably prepared for winter, here's the rather lovely Charlotta Perers aka Big Fox and her new single - anything but boring, I'd say...

And finally, I know I featured the new single from Miss Traci Lords in a recent "Pick of the Pops" post, but that was merely a teaser and is now gone from YouTube - now the splendidly sleazy video for Last Drag has finally been released!

"I kicked that habit, when I kicked your ass out the door!" Indeed...

As always, enjoy!

The future’s bright, the future’s electronic?

Naming some of their "hot picks" for musical success in 2009, the BBC predicts the soundtrack to the next twelve months will be electronic - a throwback (or tribute) to the glory days of the early 1980s synthesizer experimentalists.

BBC Hot Picks 2009

So, intrigued by this concept (being a child of that very electro era myself), I thought I'd investigate some of the names on their list. Amongst the usual studenty, arthouse dross and faux-"street" artists, these three rather piqued my interest. See what you think...

La Roux:

The rather cute Frankmusik:

Little Boots:

I wish them every success, but in the meantime, here's a taste of some real 1980s electronic music masters at work...
