The nonstandard sexual orientation of the president of the Russian Federation

According to the Guardian:
A picture depicting Vladimir Putin in full makeup has been banned in Russia.

The picture is cited on the Russian justice ministry’s list of banned “extremist” materials – a list that is 4,074 entries long. No 4,071 states that the poster, depicting Putin with painted eyes and lips, implies “the supposed nonstandard sexual orientation of the president of the Russian Federation”.

It’s unclear exactly which image the ministry is talking about – but it is believed to be similar to one used on signs during protests against Russia’s anti-gay laws. It turns out there are quite a lot of photoshopped images in circulation that depict Putin in drag.
An offer too tempting to resist, methinks...

It's also a perfect reason to post this old fave once more...

New Musical Excess

It's 2014, dear reader - Happy New Year!

As we slowly recover from last night's annual melée that is the Dolores Delargo Towers NYE party, it is time, methinks, to recall some of the musical highlights of the year that was...

We had many great musical nights out during 2013 - A Chorus Line, The Tailor-Made Man, Mile High - the Musical, The Supreme Fabulettes supporting Leslie Jordan, Marianne Faithfull, Merrily We Roll Along, Brian Ferry at Proms in the Park, Eve Ferret and Hazel O'Connor, and Top Hat among them.

However, the year in music really belonged to one man. Surprising the world (as he inevitably does), our icon Mr David Bowie returned to the limelight in January after a decade away, with a new single Where Are We Now? - a prelude to his absolutely brilliant album The Next Day:

As excellent as that comeback trip was, it was the title track of the album that I think really did it for me (as featured here in May)...

...and (needless to say), I will remember the stunning tribute exhibition David Bowie is... for the rest of my life!

Speaking if surprising musical resurrections, our beloved Pet Clark really astounded the critics with her Cut Copy Me single and marvellous album Lost in You (featured here back in March) - and one of the best events of the year was seeing her live in October. Here's the single:

But what of the rest? It wasn't such a bad year for newer music, either...

I first highlighted the superb single I Could Be The One by Avicii vs Nicky Romero way back in January, and lo and behold the benighted music-buying yoof agreed - this was one of the biggest dance songs of the year:

Speaking of mega-hits of the year, it was in February that I first picked up on the fab'n'shouty I Love It by Icona Pop featuring Charlie XCX, and the rest is history, as it dominated early summer in the UK:

Mention "shouty", and of course we have to mention our beloved Luciana! In June 2013, she teamed up with the gayest-of-in-yer-face-gays Cazwell to knock the spots off the opposition:

A completely contrasting singer who I really adored during 2013 is the marvellously camp Miss Caro Emerald. Featured here in August, here's her anthem for my life, it's Liquid Lunch:

We also welcomed back an old favourite in August, the singer formerly of the mega-kitsch Bear Force One, now calling himself Circuit21, and his version of gay 80s standard Love In The Shadows:

Our very own superstars the Pet Shop Boys had a rather good renaissance in 2013 with the fab album Electric, and a clutch of great singles from it. Here, from June, is my fave - Axis:

It was quite a year for our favourite sexy houseboys Kazaky, too! They featured here not once, not twice, but three times - in August it was their exhortation to Touch Me (yes, please!) and in October It Doesn't Matter; but it was their protest song against the creeping repression of gays in Russia and their native Ukraine (from April), Crazy Law that really was the business!

Princess Kylie, on the other hand, had a less memorable year. In 2013 she not only signed to Jay-Z's management firm Roc-Nation (gawd help us! - the home of bloody Rihanna, MIA and Rita Ora) and split with her gorgeous boyfriend Andrés Velencoso, but her official single Skirt was in my opinion so unbearable it didn't even merit being featured here. Two side-projects with other artists, however, did - the very strange Whistle (with Icelandic experimental combo Múm, as featured here in March), and this rather lovely collaboration with Laura Pausini (from October), Limpido:

There were many contenders in 2013 for the title "catchiest song of the year", but Le Grind's I Was There (Where Were You?) from June was certainly one of them!

Many, too, are the contenders for "song of 2013". However, for me - and I make no apologies for featuring it here for a third time (first time was in October) - given the unhappy situation in Russia, and with the Sochi Winter Olympics almost upon us, it simply has to be the magnificent Xelle and Red Flag!

Let us look forward to another good year in music - roll on, 2014!

Seeing red

Should he have gone?

Dame Elton John played the first of two concerts in Russia last night, the first major artist to do so since Putin's anti-"gay propaganda" laws were introduced earlier this year.

Apparently from the stage in Moscow's Crocus City Hall he:
  • Said "I am deeply saddened and shocked over the current legislation that is now in place against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community here in Russia. In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating.”
  • Dedicated the concert to Vladislav Tornovoi, a 23-year-old man tortured and murdered in the southern city of Volgograd earlier this year.
  • Called for "renouncing all discrimination, including that based on non-traditional sexual orientation".
  • Told the audience "Music is a very powerful thing. It brings people together irrespective of their age, their race, their sexuality, or their religion. It does not discriminate. Look around you tonight. You see men, women, young and old, gay and straight. Thousands of Russian people enjoying the music. We’re all here together in harmony and harmony is what makes a happy family and a strong society. The spirit we share tonight is what builds a future of equality, love and compassion for my children and for your children. Please don’t leave it behind when you leave tonight."
But is it enough?

Let's see if he says more and does more to highlight the despicable behaviour of the Russian government when he takes to the stage again tonight in the Volga city of Kazan...

I am not going to end with an Elton song. Instead, let's hear again from a band who have actually issued a direct challenge to Putin and his state-sponsored thugs - it's Yelle and Red Flag:

I feel like we are moving back in time
The world seems upside down
We’re crashing to the ground, yeah

Although I know some battles have been won
We’ve got a way to go
Until we win the war

Ain’t gonna stop until I get there
Ain’t gonna rest until I get fair
Ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop
I have a dream, have a dream dream dream

Ain’t gonna rest till I get respect
Can’t let history repeat itself
Ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop
I have a dream, have a dream dream dream

People shutting people out, I see a red flag
People taking people’s rights, I see a red flag
See a red flag, see a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters
When they take away your freedom, it’s a red flag
When they take what makes you human, it’s a red flag
It’s a red flag, it’s a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters

This is about you
This is about me
This is about us all
Not one community

You’re no authority on what is right or wrong
When you make somebody weaker, it doesn’t make you strong
What if someone tried to take away your rights?
Told you who you can love, who you can marry, how to live your life?
Freedom shouldn’t come with a price - pricetag
Time to raise your voice, raise your head, raise a red flag

Ain’t gonna stop until I get there
Ain’t gonna rest until I get fair
Ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop
No, no, no

Ain’t gonna rest till I get respect
Can’t let history repeat itself
Ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop, ain’t gonna stop
I have a dream

People shutting people out, I see a red flag
People taking people’s rights, I see a red flag
See a red flag, see a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters
When they take away your freedom, it’s a red flag
When they take what makes you human, it’s a red flag
It’s a red flag, it’s a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters

There’s blood in the streets
And fear in the air
Won’t let ‘em convince us
That we shouldn’t care
‘Cause we know what’s wrong
And we’ll stand together
Let’s make a change that lasts forever

People shutting people out, I see a red flag
People taking people’s rights, I see a red flag
See a red flag, see a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters
When they take away your freedom, it’s a red flag
When they take what makes you human, it’s a red flag
It’s a red flag, it’s a red flag, gotta stand up for my brothers and my sisters

Popmusik

It is once again ages since we at Dolores Delargo Towers have explored the newer music that is out there in the real world - so let's get to it, and see what a maelstrom of madness has caught our ears of late...

Let us begin with something truly trashy. Richard Simmons is "an American fitness personality and actor who promotes weight-loss programs, prominently through his Sweatin' to the Oldies line of aerobics videos and is known for his eccentric, outgoing and frequently flamboyant personality". Apparently. Here's his new single Hair Do - make of it what you will!

The marvellous Agnetha Faltskog of Abba fame's latest is rather catchy little number (thanks, Henry!):

Another act that has been around for decades (admittedly nowhere near as long as Miss Faltskog), Belle and Sebastian are back with a sinister video for their new single:

I have a sort of love-hate thing going on with Miss Lana Del Rey. There is something about those strained self-consciously trippy vocals that grates after a little while. However, I must admit to having grown to like the Cedric Gervais (who?) remix of her recent single:

It appears that the return of Nile Rogers (with Daft Punk) this summer did indeed make it OK to produce unashamedly Disco music again. Like this one by Krystal Klear:

Another new release from those peerless pop gods Pet Shop Boys has arrived, this time featuring a guest rap (unfortunately) from clubbers' fave of two years ago Example. Neil wants us to come around and stay for the weekend, and who are we to say no?

Here's a rather fab discovery - a German singer who goes by the name of MarieMarie, and this rather catchy choon:

It seems like only yesterday we had a sexy video to drool over featuring our favourite houseboys Kazaky, and here is another one! As they quite rightly observe, It Doesn't Matter:

Storming into the Russian fascist "anti-gay backlash" battle with all guns blazing in defence of the gayers, the lovely girls from Xelle have created a catchy, angry stomper of a gay rights anthem that should be heard all the way to the Kremlin!

Song of the moment (and far better than Our Princess's recent official release Skirt, which sounds like something a nonentity like Rita Ora might record) is Kylie Minogue's faboo collaboration with Italian superstar Laura Pausini - Limpido. [Let's hope this splendid track brings her some joy and success after her recent split from the gorgous Andres Velencoso]...

And finally (because we have to end somewhere!), thanks again to the fine folks who inhabit Barbarella's Galaxy, it's the oddest video of them all - Breach and their/his incredibly contagious Jack!

As ever, enjoy - and let me know your thoughts...

How's about that, then, guys and gals?

It's that time again - let us meander through the miscellany of music that has mesmerised my mood this week...

To open proceedings, here's a rather interesting cover of one of Our Glorious Leader Madonna's classics by the remarkable James Yuill:

Critics may have accused her of trying to vocally emulate one of our patron saints Kate Bush, but I feel the mysterious Saint Saviour is a delightfully unusual discovery amongst the dross that passes for popular music (M'lud) these days...

As you may well have realised, dear reader, there is little we love better here at Dolores Delargo Towers than to discover a new diva - or some new trash! And that is just what the new "girl"-band sensation Xelle provide by the bucket-load! Thanks to the lovely Mike at Pop Trash Addicts (once again!) for this one:

And from the ridiculous to the sublime... The deeply wonderful Ladytron are back, with a rather fabby new single (which has, unfortunately, been appropriated by FIFA for some game or other):

The remix by DJ Tiesto is rather good too...

And finally - let us conclude with (as is my wont) another little electro number. Here is the Austrian performance artist and club promoter(!) Mel Merio (here without her band, the yukkily named "Menstruation Monsters") with a short but sweet and incredibly catchy choon:

Thoughts?
