Ex Dex

click to embiggen

And so farewell, then Michael Nader, better known as the devilish Dex Dexter in Dynasty, who died this week aged 76.

He was the perfect foil for Alexis...

Always a melodrama!

Totty of the Day

...birthday boy Maxwell Caulfield (55 today)!

Facts about Mr Caulfield:
  • He began his stage career as an exotic dancer at London's Windmill Theatre, ostensibly in order to obtain an Equity card.
  • His acting career proper began in New York, starring in (among others) Entertaining Mr Sloane, An Inspector Calls and (famously) naked in Salonika.
  • His big break was alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in the critically slagged-off Grease 2, before hitting the big time as "Miles" in The Colbys and Dynasty.
  • More recently he made a bit of a comeback the UK, with parts in Casualty and Emmerdale, and has returned to his roots in stage musicals, currently in the touring version of Singing in the Rain.
  • He has been married to John Mills' daughter Juliet (eighteen years his senior) since 1980.

And yes, I still would.

42 outfits in one episode...

Sad news today of the death of Nolan Miller, at the age of 79.

Many may ask - who? But Mr Miller is very dear to all our hearts, as the man who dressed Joan Collins and all the ultra-glamorous ladies of Dynasty, thereby setting a high-camp, hi-gloss, big-shouldered, power-dressing look for an entire generation of sophisticated (and not-so-sophisticated) women during the 80s.

Apparently taking his direct inspiration from the even more formidable Joan Crawford (for whom he was couturier for twenty years), his Alexis Colby Carrington Dexter "look" won him an Emmy in 1984. "I always put Joan Collins in gloves on Dynasty," Mr Miller famously said.

He specialised in costume design for many a glossy Aaron Spelling series including Charlie's Angels, The Love Boat and Hotel, and it is rumoured he wanted to be another Adrian - the 1940s designer whose gowns put the glamour into Hollywood. For Elizabeth Taylor's guest spot on Hotel, Mr Miller spent more than double his $15,000 budget for guest stars to dress her alone.

His roll-call of customers encompasses just about every star in the Hollywood firmament - Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner, Sophia Loren, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis among them. He designed a forest-green sequinned gown for Susan Hayward, a close friend, to wear as a presenter at the 1974 Academy Awards. She was terminally ill and died less than a year later. She was buried in the gown, according to her wishes. "When she got to heaven," he recalled her saying, "she wanted to look like a star."

With Nolan Miller's death, the whole world is a lot less glamorous...

The classiest diva

Happy 65th birthday today to the still-gorgeous actress Stephanie Beacham!

Famous for her roles in Dynasty, The Colbys, Tenko, Connie and Bad Girls (and even Corrie) among others, Miss Beacham has always had that certain genteelly British star quality that we love here at Dolores Delargo Towers.

Here's the lovely lady's latest appearance on our screens - alongside her on-screen nemesis Joan Collins...

Facts about Stephanie Beacham:
  • As a baby she was diagnosed as being completely deaf in her right ear, as her mother had contracted chickenpox during her pregnancy. She has about 75% of normal hearing capacity in her left ear.
  • Her first major film role was opposite Marlon Brando in 1971's The Nightcomers directed by Michael Winner, in which she appeared nude in one scene.
  • She is an avid collector of dolls houses and dolls house furniture
  • On her anti-Botox stance, she said: "If you want to inject cow poison in you, that’s perfectly alright...because you might keep your pretty face but your hands and knees are going to go anyway."

Tell them I'm having the same!

I couldn't resist sharing this little slice of fabulousness - as Our Joan entertains the "troops" in a way only Alexis Carrington Colby Dexter can...

I bet the Boys in the Backroom were squealing with delight!

Won't it just knock their socks off when they find out... I'm a Carrington

Happy birthday yesterday to one of the troupers of music and acting, the lovely and multi-talented Miss Diahann Carroll.

Best known to audiences worldwide as the formidable "Dominique Devereaux" in Dynasty, her career in fact spans six decades - she was the first black actress in television history to star in her own series Julia in 1968 (which received an Emmy nomination in its first year on the air), and made many subsequent TV appearances in both singing and acting roles, including playing Whoopi Goldberg's mother in that lady's one-woman show.

The young Carol Diahann Johnson emerged from stage school in the early 1950s and was catapulted into showbiz via supporting roles in films such as Carmen Jones (with Dorothy Dandridge) and Porgy & Bess (with Sydney Poitier, Sammy Davis Jr and Pearl Bailey). A long career - with myriad studio albums, and appearances on stage, on TV and on film (including an Oscar nomination for her role in Claudine) - was to follow, culminating in the Dynasty role.

Up to the present day, Miss Carroll's energetic performances and smoky soulful voice still draw in the crowds for her one-woman shows in New York, and she has conquered glittering roles such as Norma Desmond in Lloyd-Webber's Sunset Boulevard to great acclaim.

Diahann's autobiography, The Legs Are The Last To Go was published last September, and is available from Amazon.

And here are some stunning appearances by the lady herself:

Wow.
