When you pinch me try to pinch me where there's fat

The office beckons..

Oh, FFS. It's Monday again! How did that happen?

Never mind, eh? It's Fergie's birthday today [no, not that one - the one with the Black Eyed Peas], and, on this Tacky Music Monday, I think we deserve a boost of brilliant choreography featuring said lady to perk us up!

But there's more places to go with this, bien sûr...

...and, inevitably, the classic:

Have a good week, dear reader.

You sound loike Enya, you do

Wouldn't mind supping on his stout...

It's "Paddy's Day Eve", dear reader [and yet again; with the long history of this blog, which recently celebrated sixteen years(!) in business, it's understandable, here's a little bit of recycling] - time to wear green and drink stout, I believe.

Just as on previous celebrations, I turn to the marvellous French & Saunders for the most appropriate tribute to all things "Oirish" on this day.

Here's their brilliant "Raspberries"...

...and here's the real thing - The Cranberries:

They love the sound of our female droning; we’re the pretty face of cloning

OK - there may be a lot less "jigging" going on in Dublin and New York during this draconian age of "coronavirus closures" (which appears about to decimate the entertainment and hospitality industry across the world), but nevertheless, it's traditionally the day for people to pretend they're Irish and to drink copious amounts of alcohol, and that's always welcome!

Here, to aid the celebrations is one of the Emerald Isle's finest fiddle bands, The Corrs:

...but, of course, we can never think of them without thinking of the French & Saunders version, can we?!

Sláinte!

Happy Paddy's Day.

Pick the flower now before the chance is past

Another option for beach-wear for our forthcoming trip to Spain - from Giulietta degli spiriti

We have a centenary to celebrate today, dear reader - that of possibly the most extravagantly camp film director of them all, Signor Federico Fellini!

As I said a decade ago on this very blog:
...Federico Fellini was indeed one of the most influential film directors in European movie history. A pioneer of the so-called "neo-realist" style, he collaborated with Ingrid Bergman's hubbie Roberto Rossellini, Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren and her husband Carlo Ponti, Anna Magnani, Anita Ekberg and even Goldie Hawn. His film Le Notti di Cabiria was later adapted by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields as the musical Sweet Charity.
Fellini's legacy is vast and wide-ranging - everyone from Tim Burton to Terry Gilliam, David Lynch [with whom he shares a birthday] to Peter Greenaway, Rainer Werner Fassbinder to Baz Luhrmann owes him a huge debt - but there are one or two tributes that, for me, are the finest summations of a life's creativity...

...and of course, as it is Tacky Music Monday, my favourite musical tribute to the man's work:

I fill this bra

From the BBC:
Madonna made a surprise appearance at a 25th anniversary screening of her film Truth or Dare at the Museum of Modern Art in New York last night.

The documentary, which was known as In Bed With Madonna in the UK, followed all the drama from her Blond Ambition Tour.
I still can't watch it without thinking of French and Saunders...

Baby Dawn

photo: Chris Blott

"If I had been around when Rubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? Well, she would have been the paintbrush."

It's Dawn French's birthday, bitches!

From The Comic Strip Presents and Murder Most Horrid to The Vicar of Dibley and latterly Roger and Val Have Just Got In - which I have never actally watched - she is one of the queens of British TV comedy.

Miss Dawn Roma French was born in Wales and brought up in Plymouth (two places very familiar to me in my life). She emerged from the right-on world of the Central School of Speech and Drama in the early 80s, and with friend and flatmate Jennifer Saunders went on to conquer the world of "alternative" comedy. With their singular brand of subtle zaniness [I hate that word, but it fits], and uncanny ability to not just impersonate but also actually look like the famous (and not-so-famous) characters that are often the subject of their sketches, Dawn and Jen have quite rightly emerged from the world of alternative cabaret to become "national treasures".

In tribute to the divine Miss French, here are a few classics from the French and Saunders show...

Raw Sex no more

RIP "Ken" of Raw Sex, who died today...

Simon Brint (Ken) and Rowland Rivron (Duane)'s spoof act Raw Sex - the hapless musical duo formed in the early days of alternative comedy - went on to become the house band for French and Saunders.

Another sad loss...

Hee hee! Sophisticated, Singer, Liverpool, Great, Scouse

It's the post-Xmas Tacky Music Monday! Yesterday I sat through the marathon that was "Every Number One of the 80s". As a friend wittily said, "there must be some "number twos" amongst that lot". True, there is only so much Cliff, Tiffany, Nick Berry or Shakin' Stevens that you can take, but there were some good ones amongst them.

This being the last week of the Noughties I thought I'd focus on the charts at the end of two decades hence, 1989 - but as the chart-topper was a choice between Jive Bunny or Band Aid 2, I decided instead to check out some of the choons that didn't make the top of the UK charts twenty years ago. And for today's selection, I came across a really tacky corker... Heeeeeerre's Sonia!!

And lest we forget, here's that classic French & Saunders sketch "featuring" the diminutive Scouser in all her glory...

And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality...

Happy 65th birthday today to Michelle Phillips - the "pretty one" in the fantastic Mamas & The Papas.

Epitomising all that was great and dreamy about the optimistic late 60s hippy/folk musical era, I have always loved the vocal harmonies and uplifting songs of the Mamas & The Papas - Monday, Monday, Creeque Alley, California Dreaming, Dedicated To The One I Love, Dream a Little Dream of Me, classics every one.

Inevitably, most of the media focus was on Mama Cass - the hard-drinking, oversized earth mother (and inspiration for later generations of big girl singers right up to Beth Ditto today) - but without the rest of the Mamas & The Papas her later solo career was a pale imitation.

Admittedly, Michelle's affair with band member Denny Doherty while still married to John Phillips (whose previous marriage she had been party to breaking up) may have contributed to their professional split, but her vocals always complimented Cass's perfectly.

The only surviving founder member of the group, Michelle went on to carve for herself a successful acting career on the big screen and on TV, appearing in both Knots Landing and Beverly Hills 90210.

But it is for her contribution to the sublimely summery sound of the Mamas & The Papas that we remain eternally grateful...

And here, inevitably, is the excellent French & Saunders skit:

Sláinte ma Cara!

To help celebrate St Paddy's Day (not the "St Guinness" festival that saw loads of drunken yoof take over London last Sunday), here is a little tribute to some of Ireland's most revered exports...

French and Saunders. Of course.

We like this one, Pats!

With all the exuberance that surrounded the Pride weekend, we seem to have neglected to mention the 50th birthday celebrations of Miss Jennifer Saunders, one of the greatest queens of comedy... Happy (belated) Birthday, darling...
