Make your own kind of music

The hallowed halls of Fabulon just welcomed another remarkable arrival - with the sad news of the death of Miss Cynthia Weil. Who? I hear you ask...

Well, with her husband Barry Mann [they were married from 1961 to her death], they rivalled their compatriots in the Brill Building Bacharach & David, Goffin & King and Lieber & Stoller with a massive and enduring stream of musical compositions, many of which became standards.

Such as these...

...and they even wrote a "gay anthem"!

Wow.

RIP, Cynthia Weil (18th October 1940 – 1st June 2023)

While you were away

We have only been away for a slightly extended weekend, but in that short time what have we missed?

That favourite of busybodies everywhere, the "anti-smoking crusade" took another pathetic turn. As usual The Daily Mash has it nailed.

The British dispute with the way Spain is behaving over Gibraltar continues. Let us hope that means the cost of holidays on the Costa del Sol start to come down - we are planning to get there again next February...

WordPress - the supposed biggest rival to Blogger (although I personally hate their interface) - removed an exposé by a trainee journalist on the vile fascist homophobic group calling itself "Straight Pride", supposedly as a response to a claim over US copyright law, and is now battling accusations of censorship.

We must have been awake on Monday night, but somehow managed to completely miss the massive Perseid meteor shower that was apparently visible over Europe and the Northern Hemisphere. If one of the bars or the sauna in Amsterdam had a glass roof I suppose we might have caught it.

Worst of all, we lost not one, but two of our most beloved divas here at Dolores Delargo Towers...

On Thursday, the night before our flight when we were staying with the boys in Essex, the lovely kooky-eyed portrayer of many an "outsider" role - and camp icon (if, for nothing else, her roles in Airport and Trilogy of Terror) - Miss Karen Black departed to Fabulon. Here she is singing in her own inimitable way; with an all-girl grunge band, of course:

And then on my actual birthday - although we wouldn't have noticed, as we never switch on the news or read a paper when we're away - came the very sad news of the death of Miss Eydie Gormé (who I only recently featured on the occasion of her husband Steve Lawrence's birthday)...

[PS Miss Gormé features as our latest exhibit in the Dolores Delargo Towers Museum of Camp]

RIP both.

Now we're definitely back to reality.

When I want a melody lilting through the house

Eydie doesn't like Mondays either

A glorious weekend is over - and yah, boo, sucks, the sunshine continues. Never mind, as I drag this sun-craving carcass off to the stuffy office, it is still Tacky Music Monday, and we have showtunes to celebrate!

Here to cheer us up are today's birthday boy Steve Lawrence and his missus the incomparable Eydie Gormé, here with special guest star Gene Kelly, on a rather jolly version of George and Ira Gershwin's By Strauss:

Away with the music of Broadway
Be off with your Irving Berlin
Oh I give no quarter to Kern or Cole Porter
And Gershwin keeps pounding on tin

How can I be civil when hearing this drivel
It's only for nightclubbin' souses
Oh give me the free 'n' easy waltz that is Vienneasy and
Go tell the band If they want a hand
The waltz must be Strauss's

Ya, ya ya, give me oom-pa-pah
When I want a melody
Lilting through the house
Then I want a melody
By Strauss
It laughs, it sings, the world is in rhyme
Swinging to three-quarter time

Let the Danube flow along
And the Fledermauss
Keep the wine and give me song
By Strauss

By Jove, by Jing, by Strauss is the thing
So I say to ha-cha-cha, heraus!
Just give me your oom-pa-pah, by Strauss!

Have a great week!

Little Eydie

It was the 80th birthday yesterday of the lovely Miss Eydie Gormé!

Famous for her musical double-act with husband Steve Lawrence (also happily still alive), Miss Gormé was briefly during the 60s one of America's most successful "girlie singers" (a genre popular both sides of the Atlantic at the time), with hits such as Blame It on the Bossa Nova, Yes, My Darling Daughter and I Want To Stay Here.

Her Latin roots led to a hugely successful career in the Spanish-speaking world (where in my opinion she made some of her best music), and as half of the duo "Steve and Eydie" Miss Gormé continued to enjoy commercial and cabaret circuit success for several decades (although she remained a fleeting memory over here in the UK) before finally retiring in 2009.

Many happy returns to a lady whose music has always made me feel good...
