Rokk around the clokk?

Shit! Another week is here, already. After a lovely weekend - HM The Queen's frocks with Mother, a day in the garden - I am not ready for this.

Never mind, eh? Let's cheer ourselves up with something from the "Nazis' favourite screen songbird" Marika Rökk, in all her weirdness, shall we? On this Tacky Music Monday - this clip (from 1958, long after her dodgy reputation had been redeemed) is an absolute joy!

Sit back and enjoy the madness of Mir ist so langweilig ("I'm so bored") - and I can guarantee that you won't be...

Ich liebe es!

Have a good week, dear reader.

And I've learned to give the well-known witches' curse

Aaaargh! (again)

The eternal conundrum continues to baffle us - why do weekends fly by so damned quickly, yet the working weeks drag so tortuously?

Yet again, we're in need of a bit of a wake-up call.

How fortuitous then, that yesterday happened to be the 86th birthday of one Florencia Bisenta de Casillas-Martinez Cardona, better known as one of our fave divas here at Dolores Delargo Towers, Señorita Vikki Carr!

On this Tacky Music Monday, I think it's appropriate to revisit an old fave of hers that I have featured several times before. Simply because I adore this uber-camp Scopitone clip..!

Many happy returns, Vikki Carr (born 19th July 1940)

Have a good week, dear reader.

Mein Gott!

Oh, no! Monday again.

Never mind, eh? A little trawl through the archives here at Dolores Delargo Towers has turned up the perfect wake-up choon for this Tacky Music Monday - from Czechoslovakia's finest export, the late, great Karel Gott (whose birthday it would have been tomorrow), and his safety gays and girls!

Inexplicable, but fun.

Have a good week, dear reader.

STOP PRESS:

Here we go again...

I posted this at 7.46am. It is now 21.40pm. Still no sign of it in the Reading List!

The Google gnomes are bastards.

I'd shout Hooray!

Aaaaaaarrrrgh!

After one of the loveliest of Pride weekends, the reverie is over - and reality kicks in again. sigh...

Never mind, eh?

On this Tacky Music Monday, we have some outrageous puppets to comfort us, as only they know how:

Have a good week, dear reader.

Monday, 29 June 2026

J'ai plus d'appétit qu'un Barracuda

Sigh. Here we are again.

The heatwave having subsided, this would be a perfect day to potter in the garden. Unfortunately, back to the office we go...

Never mind, eh? To save ourselves from screaming, let's fix our minds on the fact that there's only this week to go, then it's Gay Xmas!

Meanwhile, on this Tacky Music Monday let's join "France's premier electrician" and his cheesy dancers in a morning exercise routine:

I feel better already.

Have a good week, dear reader!

I like big muscles and red corpuscles

Yep! Monday again.

We are shaken out of our reverie by the realisation that the old familiar - and endlessly enjoyable - routine that is called work begins once more...

Hey ho.

To take our minds off it - it would have been the 105th birthday yesterday of one of our most revered of all Hollywood vamps, Miss Jane Russell, so on this Tacky Music Monday, let us indulge in some homoerotic fantasies alongside the great lady herself, shall we?

Have a good week, dear reader. Keep cool in the heatwave, if you can...

Monday, 15 June 2026

He doesn't sound it, though, when you hear him

Fuck. Too soon, too soon - another week begins. We need a pick-me-up!

Among another "mixed bag" of names such as Neil Patrick Harris, Edvard Grieg, James Robertson Justice, Noddy Holder (who is 80 years old), Richard Baker, Johnny Hallyday, Simon Callow, Courteney Cox, Harry Nilsson, Lord John Redwood, Erroll Garner, David Rose, Waylon Jennings, Chris Morris, Yuri Andropov, Helen Hunt, Julie Hagerty and - erm - Xi Jinping...

...it would also have been the 80th birthday of the unlikeliest of sex symbols, Demis Roussos!

On this Tacky Music Monday, out of his lesser-known back-catalogue, I have discovered this! Lemon-and-brown flared outfits deserve a comeback.

However, we can never disassociate the man from the legendary summer of '76, fifty years ago, with its stand-pipes in the streets and months of sunshine.

Reflecting that magnificent heatwave, the great Greek mountain emerged from obscurity to hit Number 1 with one of the eternal summer anthems:

It always brings back thoughts of Abigail's Party to me...

"Laurence, Angela likes Demis Roussos, Tony likes Demis Roussos, I like Demis Roussos and Sue would like to hear Demis Roussos.

So do you think we could have Demis Roussos on?"

"It's a pity he's so fat."

Yeah, but he doesn't sound it, though, when you hear him."

Demis Roussos (born Artemios Ventouris-Roussos, 15th June 1946 – 25th January 2015)

When a person's personality is personable

Among another oddly-matched list of "names" including Joan Rivers, Bonnie Tyler, Robert Preston, Tim Berners-Lee, Robert Schumann, Mick Hucknall, John Everett Millais, Nancy Sinatra, Tomaso Albinoni, Jerry Stiller, Boz Scaggs, Barbara Bush, James Darren, Colin Baker, Frank Lloyd Wright, Scott Adams, Alexis Smith, Francis Crick and - erm - Kanye West...

...it's Millie Martin's birthday today (and thankfully she's still with us, aged 92). Most famous as the regular singer on That Was The Week That Was in the Swinging 60s, she's had a remarkable career, on telly and on stage - not least as a Sondheimite, nominated for a Tony award for her part in the original cast of Side By Side By Sondheim

And, on this Tacky Music Monday, here she is as part of an estimable ensemble of West End luminaries [in Hey, Mr. Producer!, June 1998], singing one of the great man's funniest "patter songs"...

Love it!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Boop-boop-de-boop!

Oh, fuck. Monday again!

As we brace ourselves for the deep, deep joys that await us in the week ahead, let's pay due homage to the greatest of photogenic icons, Miss Marilyn Monroe, shall we, whose centenary it is today!

On this Tacky Music Monday, it simply had to be this:

...and this!

Have a good week, dear reader...

Boop-boop. De-fucking-boop.

But when the thermometer goes way up and the weather is sizzling hot

Our Rosa "Veilchenblau" loves it! [click to embiggen]

The weather here in London is breaking all the records! Being in the city, rather than near the sea, and with nary a breeze, it's a bit uncomfortable to sit in for long - although we always welcome the sunshine; it's far better than our usual Bank Holiday drizzle...

On this scorching Tacky Music Bank Holiday Monday, there is only one number that will suffice:

Have a good week, dear reader.

Monday, 18 May 2026

¡No quiero verte, vete!

Nooooooooo!

Another lovely break is over and, for the first time in seventeen days, I have to open that bloody laptop and re-enter the ever-delightful world of work.

To add insult to injury, the nasty cold, dank greyness that has held sway the whole time since we returned from holiday is due to break midweek, and we'll have proper warm weather for this time of year, maybe even a heatwave - while I am in the office!

Sigh.

Never mind eh? It is a Tacky Music Monday, and, with memories of Spain fading from our minds almost as quickly as our tans - ¡Dios mío! - have I found a corker from that country, for your delectation, dear reader... Enjoy!

Have a good week. I won't!!

We're having a gang-bang

Another lovely weekend spent pottering in the garden and - whoosh! Here we are again...

Never mind, eh? - it's just a week, then we're off to Spain at the crack'o'doom on Saturday, and I have another week off after that, so I'm not too despondent.

Meanwhile, it's the 60th birthday today of one of our fave actresses, Miss Siobhan Finneran! We first fell in love with her as the harassed mum "Janice Garvey" in the sitcom Benidorm - dealing with her hapless husband "Mick", pregnant teen daughter "Chantelle", pretty-boy son "Michael" and her bombastic battleaxe mother "Madge" while trying to enjoy her holiday - and she played a blinder in Downton Abbey as the wicked ladies' maid "Miss O'Brien". She was also in Emmerdale, Happy Valley - and this, her first starring role, and a film I absolutely adore. It is a Tacky Music Monday, after all!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly

"Everyone's a national treasure these days; you can't move for them. But there should only ever be one at a time. For years, it was Dame Thora Hird. After she died, it was going to be Judi Dench, but then Joanna Lumley saved the Gurkhas so she got the gig."

It's certainly the year of sad anniversaries. On this day a decade ago, we lost the genius that was Victoria Wood. And, yes, she was a "national treasure"!

Needless to say, I, Madam Arcati, and all "our gang" absolutely idolised the woman. As did the majority of British society. We can all recite lines - maybe even whole sketches word-for-word - from her ground-breaking television series. And here's just a tiny sample of our favourites...

Of course, I haven't forgotten it's a Tacky Music Monday - so here's the ultimate pick-me-up with which to start the week!

Victoria Wood (19th May 1953 – 20th April 2016). We still miss you.

Have a good week, dear reader.

Of gardens, spreads and the Queens of England and of Bollywood

The faboo Langthorns Plantery, Bishop's Stortford, Essex [by Royal Appointment to HM The King]

So, I'm back from my jolly jaunt to Essex, doing a Grand Tour of the myriad wonderful garden centres in that county, thanks to Baby Steve and Houseboy Alex. The extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers are going to be even fuller as a result - YAY! [And I have spent most of today out there, dodging the downpours, sorting stuff out and potting things up in preparation.]

But what did I miss while I was away?

  • The highly anticipated exhibition Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at the King's Gallery opened. A centenary celebration for the very much-missed HM The Queen, it has on display for the first time "items of her clothing worn in all ten decades of her life - from birth to adulthood, from princess to queen, and from off-duty style to dressing for the global stage for momentous occasions in Britain’s history". Needless to say, we have our tickets booked for July, when we'll be going along to view it with The Mother...
  • Hot on the heels of the "Great Marmalade Outrage" [our own, our very own British marmalade will henceforth have to be described as "citrus marmalade" because of the bloody EU; apparently "Johnny Foreigner" wants the right to call their fig/apricot/other fruit concoction "marmalade" as well, rather than the pseudo-jam that it is] - now it seems that another great British spread for toast, Gentleman's Relish (Patum Peperium) has been discontinued. Scandalous!

  • ...and, sadly, I missed paying a fond farewell to another Patron Saint - Miss Asha Bhosle, Bollywood's "Queen of Playback" [singing the vocals for actresses who appeared on screen] for over eight decades, who has ascended the flower-strewn, incence-scented stairway to her Vaikuntha in Fabulon, aged 92. The Guinness Book of Records states that she was the most prolific recording artist in the world, having reportedly recorded up to 12,000 solo, duet and chorus backed songs in over 20 Indian languages since 1947!

So let us pay the great lady due tribute:

Here she is, dubbing for the magnificently camp "Helen" (Helen Jairag Richardson) - a megastar in Indian musical cinema in the 1960s:

...and here, dubbing for Reena Roy:

And finally - recognising the fact that even though I am on leave (almost) all this week, it is Tacky Music Monday - here's the lady herself, aged 79, with a tongue-in-cheek take on an old Usha Uthup number [from the only Bollywood film in which Rex Harrison and Vera Miles ever appeared, Shalimar]...

Sublime.

RIP, Asha Bhosle (born Ashalata Dinanath Mangeshkar, 8th September 1933 – 12th April 2026)

Have a good week, dear reader.

FOOTNOTE:

Of course, I could not let any such tribute pass without playing this famous paean to her!

The Devil in Miss Bosé

It's been a gloriously sunny and warm Bank Holiday for a change, and I've spent another exhausting day in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers - potting-on loads of otherwise neglected plants (and a few of the newer ones we purchased at The Gardening Club yesterday) into fresh compost; I barely scraped the surface, to be honest, as there are still dozens yet to go...

I haven't forgotten, however, that it is a Tacky Music (Easter) Monday! With only a few weeks to go till our next Spanish holiday, let's revisit one of our faves from that country.

Miguel Bosé (for it is he) is a megastar in Spain, with 21 albums, roles in more than 35 films (including Pedro Almodovar's High Heels and the award-winning French film La Reine Margot) and his own television show. His father was one of the country's top bullfighters Luis Miguel González Lucas, and his mother Lucia Bosé was a renowned Italian actress, who counted Luchino Visconti and Pablo Picasso among her friends. From that promising start it was obvious that Miguel was destined for a life in the spotlight.

Of course the fact that he was cute must have helped. The fact that he's also as gay as a handbag full of rainbows probably helped too - I expect it made his mum proud, if not his dad!

In this season, what could be more appropriate than his mega-hit - about The Devil [the cover version of which by Las Seventies remains one of our all-time faves]?

Scarily, Señorita Bosé celebrated his 70th birthday on Friday!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Nessuno, ti giuro, nessuno!

Oh dear. It's that time again. Having lost an hour on the weekend thanks to the clocks going forward, it feels even worse this morning trying to adjust to the alarm going off again...

Never mind, eh? Another recent birthday [she's 86 - gulp!] we missed was that of the utterly magnificent Mina, our "Patron Saint of Screamers" [several of whose biggest hits were translated into English and became hits for other singers, including our very own Shirley Bassey's Never, Never, Never] - so what better way to wake us up on a Tacky Music Monday than this faboo number?

Oh those groovy hepcats!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Monday, 23 March 2026

Send in the crowds...

Oh, no! After a blissful weekend celebrating the joys of Spring and pottering in the garden, it's time to put all thoughts of that aside and head back to the eternal tiresomeness of work. Dammit! We need something to cheer us up...

...and, since we missed celebrating the birthdays yesterday of these two theatrical legends, it would be curmudgeonly of me - on this Tacky Music Monday - not to dig out this [and I make no apologies for featuring it again, despite having done so on numerous occasions over the years...] - it's faboo, and I never tire of it!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Mozart's spinning in his grave

After a lovely weekend in Dorking for Lou's 60th [more on all that later, no doubt], it's back to the same old shit-show again...

...but there is salvation at hand on this Tacky Music Monday, courtesy of a little something from the archives.

How about Belgium's answer to Anthea Turner murdering a beautiful aria by Mozart - and with a dance remix?!

If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way

How these weekends run away with us - a day with Mother and a fabulous fashion exhibition, a day of relaxation, and it's back to work again.

Ho hum.

Never mind, on this Tacky Music Monday we have something unforgivingly chirpy to get us going, courtesy of last Saturday's birthday girl Donna Loren (here with Darlene Love and The Blossoms, the Wellingtons and The Shindig dancers). It's exhausting:

Sunshine? Lollipops? Rainbows? We wish we had any of those today instead of greyness.

Have a good week, dear reader.

Daft Monday

Sigh. Monday again.

It's been a relaxing weekend. Indeed, Saturday's drizzly, windy weather meant we hardly got much done in the garden (nor indoors, for that matter). Yesterday, we finally got to see the V&A's latest landmark exhibition Marie Antoinette Style [more on that later, no doubt]. Then boom! It's all over.

Never mind, eh? Life's always good when on a Tacky Music Monday I can share a little something I have discovered, by way of a wake-up call! It's a slice of video genius, combined with an old fave from a lounge-music-cover aficionado:

Such profound lyrics. Such a superb video.

Have a good week, dear reader.
