De nouveaux morceaux

It's a gloomy, grey, blustery day here in London, so what better to take our minds off it than a selection of some of the "newer" music that has caught my ear of late?

Let's open with a corker! Courtesy of Mr DeVice, who flagged it up in his own blog just recently, the latest from our current "fave eccentrics" is faboo, of course:

Striking a more mellow tone, the latest release from Soft Cell's final album Danceteria is a melancholic trip down memory lane for Marc Almond, and is rather lovely:

Now for something completely different! A new discovery, courtesy of BBC Radio 3's esoteric Late Junction programme - here's a jolly number from one of Mali's finest artistes:

Another excellent mash-up from the genius Mr Bill McClintock:

From the familiar to something totally bizarre... I love this!

And, saving the best to last [despite the lack of a video] - the 'Boys rip the piss out of a dictator. Brilliantly:

Who washes Putin’s underpants?
Who has to keep them clean
deep in the bowels of his residence
in a top secret washing machine?

Who keeps his secrets secret?
Is nothing or everything true?
Is he fatally ill or strong as a horse
impossible to know or get close to?

When he poisons an opponent’s underpants
does he laugh at his brilliant scheme
knowing he’s got to the root of the problem
deadly but somehow obscene?

Is it difficult to sleep at night?
Does he always sleep alone
with nightmares of a prison cell
summoned to be be judged and to atone?

No, he’ll get away with anything
like Stalin and Peter the Great
He’s the only one that ever matters
He knows what he must dictate

Meanwhile his underpants are washed
by a loyal woman or man
and his secrets will be secret until
that one unfortunate day his shit hits the fan

As ever, I love to hear your thoughts, dear reader...

Enough!

TFFT! Another week of drudgery - while looking out on the glorious (if slightly chilly) Spring sunshine from the stuffy and airless office - is over...

...and we have a Diva birthday to celebrate! Sharing her day with our Patron Saint of Hoofing Shirley MacLaine, as well as the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Tony Visconti, Paula Yates, Aidan Gillen, Anthony Trollope, Jill Ireland, guitarist John Williams, Kelly Clarkson, Sir Stafford Cripps, Clement Freud, Gabby Logan, filmmaker Richard Donner, Olympic cyclist (Dame) Laura Kenny, Rory McCann and - erm - "Lord Haw Haw" William Joyce - it's "MegaBabs" Barbra Streisand's birthday today!

As it is the end of the week, and we have a party to start planning, so how about Babs' most successful foray into dance music - in the company of another glittering gay icon LaDonna?! I think so. Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, folks!

Tell me now, how does it feel?

Happy 40th Birthday! New Order's Blue Monday first arrived in the charts on this weekend in March 1983:

  • It reached #12 on 23rd April.
  • Having not left the Top 100 all year, it re-entered the Top 40 on 17th September.
  • It hit its highest chart position - #9 - on 15th October.
  • However, it was actually a remix by none other than Quincy Jones that gave the song its highest chart place (#3) five years later, in May 1988.

An all-time classic, way back in 2009 I decided to post a "recipe" of the "ingredients" that contributed to its composition, based upon a Sky Arts documentary at the time - and lo and behold, Alex Petridis in The Guardian has done the same. Some of the ingredients he used were the same as mine, but there are some interesting differences...

Both he and I acknowledged that this slice of Italo disco brilliance (which Bernard Sumner has always cited as one of his favourite songs) was a key element:

It's undeniable that Giorgio Moroder's groundbreaking collaboration with Donna Summer was a big influence on the band, but I chose the obvious number...

...whereas Mr Petridis suggested this album track:

It's undeniable that this one had to be in the mix, and our lists coincided again:

Although, inevitably, a soupçon of Kraftwerk had to be there, the "flavours" diverged - as Alex chose this:

Whereas I specified one that was a tad more familiar:

There was one more piece in the Guardian article that came as a bit of a "left-fielder", however. Apparently Peter Hook claimed the sparse riffs of Blue Monday were inspired by the twanging lead guitar in Ennio Morricone's score for For a Few Dollars More!

Whatever the ingredients, the resulting "dish" is delicious, indeed:

Ooh, something's coming over me

Wheeee!

Another three-day Bank Holiday looms, dear reader - it's May Day on Monday!

Typically, it's damn cold for the time of year - but there's always a sunny party atmosphere at the end of a week; especially when Miss Donna Summer's in the house...

Thank Disco It's (Beltane) Friday!

We're off to see Miss Hope Springs at the faboo Crazy Coqs again tonight (at the personal invitation of her alter-ego Ty Jeffries no less), so let the festivities commence...

Have a good weekend, folks!

Sittin' here eatin' my heart out waitin'

The relief is palpable - another stressful week is almost over. The weather's taken a particularly Spring-like turn, with double-figure temperatures over the past few days, and - after the rain that is forecast this afternoon - a pleasant weekend (of pottering in the garden, hopefully) ahead...

Let's jolly ourselves up in anticipation of all that in a most appropriate way, shall we? Who better than the - ahem - fabulously talented Legs and Co, gyrating in feathers and sequins to a Donna Summer classic?

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Fallin' free, fallin' free

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Phew.

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Thursday, 31 December 2020

Yes, yes, my dear, perhaps next year, or maybe even never - in which case...

The end is nigh, dear reader - and here are a few numbers I felt appropriate for this, a most welcome New Year's Eve.

Starting with an old favourite that features lyrics which perhaps express many people's feelings about 2020:

It's that little souvenir, of a terrible year
Which makes my eyes feel sore

...however, this one sums up my feelings a bit more succinctly, perhaps:

Regardless, no matter how much we have hated, and want to see the back of, 2020 - NYE is essentially an excuse for a party [and we're having ours via ZOOM later!], so let's get cracking!

Happy Brexit Day!

...and, of course, such a party would be incomplete without today's late, lamented birthday girl LaDonna Adrian Gaines!

Let's raise our glasses to a Happy, Happier NEW Year, everyone!

Enough is enough

So, here we go again...

Thanks to all those "superspreaders", all those lovely people in our - ahem - cosmopolitan area still not wearing a mask in Tesco Metro nor on public transport, thanks to all all the - ahem - delightful gangs of yoofs holding their illegal street-parties and raves, and to all the classy types crowding around the pubs and Nando's hugging and partying like there's no deadly virus going around at all, London has entered "Tier 2" of the UK's new three-tier infection risk rating.

If there is ever an end to all this utter madness, I am going to boogie till I drop!

To this apt number, probably.

Mo more "tiers", indeed.

Shifting phases

The sunshine is utterly gorgeous today - better make the most of it, however. For today is the Autumnal Equinox, and from here on in, the nights start drawing in!

The "season of decay" begins...

...but Miss Summer is still here to brighten things up a little:

Sigh.

I Might Explode, Baby

Speaking of 1989...

...as we hurtle towards possibly the most welcome of weekends in ages [this first week back in the office after two glorious weeks away has been excruciating!], why not dip our toes into another of those all-conquering Stock-Aitken-Waterman hits that dominated that end-of-a-brilliant-decade era?

It's Miss Donna Summer's "comeback" single, after all!

What would I have to do
To get you to notice me too
Do I
Stand in line
One of a million
Admiring eyes

Walk a tightrope way up high
Write your name across the sky

I'm going crazy just to let you know
You'd be amazed how much I love you so, baby
When I get my hands on you I won't let go
This time I know it's for real

Should I write or call your home
Shout it out with a megaphone
Radio, TV news
Got to find a way
To get my message to you

To say I love you with a neon sign
Anything to make you mine

I'm going crazy just to let you know
If I wait too long for you I might explode, baby
I've been around the block enough to know
That this time I know it's for real

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, my darlings...

Toot toot, hey, beep beep

It's New Year's Eve, and our party beckons...

...and we find that the (somewhat tainted) gay icon Donna Summer would have been seventy years old today!

This being a Tacky Music (New Year) Monday, let us first pay tribute with some - ahem - interesting covers of the great lady's hits...

...courtesy of the unlikely combo of Andy Bell of Erasure and - err - k.d. lang?

...that tacky music icon Iris Chacon:

...and the fantabulosa Blue Man Group:

However, there was ever only one Donna Summer - so here is the lady herself (unfortunately duetting with a rather creepy-looking "porn star"):

What a way to close a year!

Sunday, 2 July 2017

Ooh, it's so good, it's so good

Listening to Radio 2 (as is my wont on Sundays) I heard a trailer for a show tomorrow that sent a shockwave down my spine.

For, terrifyingly, it is forty years since the release of one of the most influential songs, ever - I Feel Love by Donna Summer!

The brilliant product of a cross-pollination between the mechanised, electronic world of Giorgio Moroder's synths and the sassy, sleazy world of funk-disco vocal styles, I Feel Love was not only the song that encapsulated the global domination of Disco, but also gave birth to the synth-pop era that made the late 70s and early-mid 80s such an era of experimentation and innovation.

As the blurb for the programme The Summer Of "I Feel Love" says:
Exactly 40 years ago, the combination of Donna Summer's beguiling voice and the studio wizardry of writer-producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte created a record that changed the course of dance music. I Feel Love, released on July 2, 1977, was the template for the electronic revolution that followed, inspiring generations of artists with a daringly futuristic sound that reverberates to this day.

To mark this momentous anniversary, Paul Sexton introduces a celebration of a truly groundbreaking record. The Summer Of "I Feel Love" features memories of its creation from Moroder and Bellotte, while superstar DJs Arthur Baker and John Morales talk about its impact on both the dancefloor and on their lives. Martyn Ware, meanwhile, describes the influence that I Feel Love had on his work with the Human League and Heaven 17. Also featured are techno pioneer Derrick May, author Tim Lawrence and Sister Bliss of Faithless, who reveal what it was like to remix the track that became the very pulse of disco.
It also spawned myriad cover versions, not least by Madonna, Kylie, Blondie, Bette Midler, Moby, and...

...the inimitable Klaus Nomi:

...an Irish fiddle-band called Ham Sandwich:

...Blue Man Group featuring Venus Hum [love that dress!]:

...a Turkish singer called Ülkü:

...and, of course, Bronski Beat and Marc Almond!

However, there is only one original, after all...

Happy birthday, I Feel Love!

Postscript - 3 July 2017

A fact I never realised:
I Remember Yesterday was yet another concept album, cooked up by Bellotte and inspired by Anthony Powell’s novel A Dance to The Music Of Time (also the LP’s original title). Each song would evoke a different decade’s mood, from 40s swing to the 1960s with the Shirelles and Supremes, 70s funk and contemporary disco before alighting upon the future with the final track: I Feel Love.

Spring affairs

We've had a rewarding - if knackering - day in the sunny gardens of Dolores Delargo Towers, clearing, cutting-back, pruning and planting-up (foxgloves mainly).

It may only be February (and who knows what joys the weather has yet to throw at us), but Spring is definitely in the air (if those cyclamen are anything to go by)...

Which reminds me - we may be on holiday still, but it's another weekend looming [and a bijou "Winter Blues Cure" party, courtesy of John-John, to look forward to tonight]. Who better to suit the mood but the late, dearly departed Miss Donna Summer and a most appropriate number indeed..?

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a good one, dear reader.

Your way to paradise

It's always good to get a long one (weekend, that is).

As we've been enjoying our last day of sunshine for the whole Easter break, pottering in the garden, I think we deserve a night out in the weirdly-lit world of Donna Summer, the Commodores (in their very best futuristic mirrored gladiator outfits) and a DJ in a giant egg, and all to the soundtrack of Love'n'Kisses' Thank God It's Friday...

We, of course don't thank an invisible Spaghetti Monster - we say Thank Disco It's Friday!

Enjoy the break!

Ooh you and me, you and me

Our "house favourite totty" here at Dolores Delargo Towers, the gorgeous Tom Daley has announced his engagement.

[Dustin Lance] Black cock-rings armbands all round...

Of course, we wish the boys all the best - and look forward to a new instalment of Mr Black's leaked sex-tape, fingers crossed - so, by way of a double celebration (in our traditional manner, at the end of a week) how about this appropriate number, complete with cheesy dancing by Legs and Co?

Thank Disco It's Friday!

The synth God

Giorgio Moroder, the single greatest influence on what we know as "electronic dance music" - which these days even has its own acronym "EDM" in the "hip'n'happening" media - celebrates his 75th birthday today.

We can recognise the man's seminal style-setting (much-copied) sound in his breakthrough hit From Here to Eternity, which entered the UK charts thirty-eight years ago in September 1977:

When he launched Miss Donna Summer onto an unsuspecting world, he possibly didn't realise that he had almost single-handedly enshrined "Disco" as an electronic, rather than orchestral/percussive, genre:

Of course, the lovely Legs & Co make it all seem so retro...

Signor Moroder didn't stop there, of course. His music "gave birth" to the preponderance of synth-pop in the 80s, in no small part influenced by his collaboration with the fantabulosa Sparks:

Few people make the connection these days, I reckon - but he was the producer who made Blondie's Call Me so utterly brilliant:

He continued to be a presence throughout the decade (collaborating with David Bowie on Cat People, Phil Oakey of Human League on Electric Dreams, Harold Faltermeyer and Berlin on Take My Breath Away, and with the lovely Limahl on The Neverending Story), but until his recent work with dance weirdos Daft Punk, his star had faded somewhat.

And so it came as a bit of a surprise to everyone when he resurfaced just last year, and began teasing us with details of his soon-to-be-released collaboration album Deja Vu. I am still raving about Right Here, Right Now, the choon he released with Princess Kylie (as featured on my last "musical round-up" blog). The album also features (among others) tracks with Kelis, Sia and Charli XCX - and this...

It's a rather good cover of Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner... starring none other than Britney Spears!

Happy birthday, Giovanni Giorgio Moroder (born 26th April 1940)

If you've had your fill, get the check pay the bill, you can do it

Yesterday's birthday girl, Miss Mega-Babs Streisand.

Queen of Disco, the late, great Donna Summer.

All this, and Legs & Co too!

What more do you want?

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a good weekend, folks.

Such a rumour

Phew. A busy ol' week draws inevitably to its close, as does February... as does the excellence that was Camden and Islington LGBT History Month!

Last week, it was gay ancient Egypt and Victorian sexology. This week I have been enthralled by Kenneth Halliwell, Rachael Jones and Marlene Dietrich (more of that later, no doubt), and tonight we have the rip-roaring finale - the "Glamour Factory" Ball (featuring Lana Pillay, vintage fashion, a drag show, music, magic and performance art)!

To kick off the party in traditional fashion, we are overdue a dose of the late, great Donna Summer. We could also do with another jaw-dropping bit of "literal choreography" from Legs and Co.

So here they are together, in an unforgettable performance from 36 years ago this week, with Rumour Has It - Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend!

And I'll never have that recipe again

It's damp. It's grey. The extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers are looking distinctly autumnal. But, hey - another grim week is drawing to its close!

And we know what that means... It's time to get the wet-look hairspray out, grab something suitably sequinned to wear - and party! Here's the late, great "Queen of Disco" Donna Summer herself to get us in the mood with her classic take on the eternally silly MacArthur Park (from 35 years ago this week).

Do the Mash

At the end of what has felt like one of the longest weeks of my life, returning to work, in the dark, after two weeks with my legs up (not as much fun as it sounds), I am in desperate need of some party music to lighten my mood and encourage me into my leopardskin roller-disco boots...

To that end I have discovered a most magnificent disco mash-up by an evident genius of that genre by the name of Robin Skouteris.

It features Miss Ross, Dan Hartman (who would have been 62 tomorrow), Donna Summer, Lipps Inc and many more - Thank Disco It's Friday!

Hope your weekend's a great one!!
