Beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly

"Everyone's a national treasure these days; you can't move for them. But there should only ever be one at a time. For years, it was Dame Thora Hird. After she died, it was going to be Judi Dench, but then Joanna Lumley saved the Gurkhas so she got the gig."

It's certainly the year of sad anniversaries. On this day a decade ago, we lost the genius that was Victoria Wood. And, yes, she was a "national treasure"!

Needless to say, I, Madam Arcati, and all "our gang" absolutely idolised the woman. As did the majority of British society. We can all recite lines - maybe even whole sketches word-for-word - from her ground-breaking television series. And here's just a tiny sample of our favourites...

Of course, I haven't forgotten it's a Tacky Music Monday - so here's the ultimate pick-me-up with which to start the week!

Victoria Wood (19th May 1953 – 20th April 2016). We still miss you.

Have a good week, dear reader.

What is it, muesli?

Remarkably, sharing a birthday with some of the "Best of British", including Kenneth Williams, Bruce Forsyth, Christine Keeler, Nigel Planer, Judy Cornwell, Sheila Hancock, Sir John Mills, Lord Baden-Powell, the Duchess of Kent and, erm, James Blunt; as well as George Washington, Marni Nixon, Drew Barrymore, Luis Buñuel, Guy Mitchell, Jonathan Demme, Ted Kennedy, Niki Lauda, Steve Irwin and Ellen Greene; our beloved Dame Julie Walters celebrates her 70th birthday today!

All hail.

One of our all-time favourite actresses here at Dolores Delargo Towers, Dame Julie has turned her hand to a little bit of everything, from drama to comedy to musicals, and in her long career quite rightly earned herself that well-trodden epithet "national treasure". She's been much in the news lately, talking about her recent all-clear after treatment for cancer - and for that we breathe a sigh of relief!

So without further ado, here's a random selection of favourite bits from her career...

That's the colour of our Margaret's shower curtains - them varicose veins over there

Just because...

...It is a Sunday...
...The weather's turned horrid again, so it's been too cold to potter in the garden...
...I've had enough of lumping around with this broken foot, but know I still have weeks to go before I can remove the "big boot"...
...The world needs some cheering up...

Here's some more of the much-missed Miss Victoria Wood!

And finally, of course...

Everybody loved "Barry and Freda", it seems - and everybody loved Victoria Wood.
  • "I've got a degree; does that mean I have to spend my life with intellectuals? I've also got a life-saving certificate, but I don't spend my evenings diving for a rubber brick with my pyjamas on."
  • "Foreplay is like beefburgers – three minutes on each side."
  • "I haven't got a waist. I've just got a sort of place, a bit like an unmarked level crossing."
  • "A man is designed to walk three miles in the rain to phone for help when the car breaks down, and a woman is designed to say, ‘You took your time’ when he comes back dripping wet."
  • "I once went to one of those parties where everyone throws their car keys into the middle of the room. I don’t know who got my moped but I’ve been driving that Peugeot for years."
  • "Sexual harassment at work... is it a problem for the self-employed?"
  • "She said 'Victoria, I see you in a beige Kaftan' I said, 'well I see you in an oxygen tent' and put the 'phone down."
  • "I looked up the symptoms of pregnancy ... moody, irritable, big bosoms ... I've obviously been pregnant for thirty-six years."
  • "My boyfriend had a sex manual but he was dyslexic. I was lying there and he was looking for my vinegar."
  • "Everyone's a national treasure these days; you can't move for them. But there should only ever be one at a time. For years, it was Dame Thora Hird. After she died, it was going to be Judi Dench, but then Joanna Lumley saved the Gurkhas so she got the gig."
  • "Life’s not fair, is it? Some of us drink champagne in the fast lane, and some of us eat our sandwiches by the loose chippings on the A597."

Les Miserables meets A Chorus Line with Macaroons

We watched the DVD of the fabulous Acorn Antiques - The Musical last night. We've had this for years now, ever since we went to see the sell-out show back in 2005, but never got round to watching it...

It was a great reminder of just what a genius writer Victoria Wood is, as she skilfully weaves the familiar absurdities of her most-loved regular sketch about the bizarre "Manchesterford" shop with pastiches and parodies of other musical shows and genres.

It also proves once more what absolutely brilliant actors Julie Walters and Celia Imrie really are (skilfully supported by Duncan Preston, Josie Lawrence, Neil Morrissey and the sublimely talented singer Sally Ann Triplett) - and indeed Miss Imrie won a well-deserved Tony award for her role.

Any excuse, really, to post this:

You’ve been a very naughty boy!

Conversation tonight got round to classic films, and one in particular cropped up - Personal Services starring the magnificent Julie Walters.

Loosely (!) based on the life of the notorious Madam of suburbia Cynthia Payne, this film is a tour-de-force of acting as our Julie, Shirley Stelfox, Alec McCowen and others lift the lid on the kinky underworld of the British establishment and the girls who cater to their every fantasy.

If you've never seen it, shame on you! Here's the trailer to give you a flavour of the brilliance of this all-time favourite...
