Non c'è scampo ormai per noi

Monday again.

Why do these weekends go by so quickly? Some stupid "timey-wimey stuff", I suppose.

Anyhoo, despite the bitter resentment, the aches and pains, and the general ennui that greets the alarm going off at the beginning of another work week - on this Tacky Music Monday, thank heavens we have the effervescent Lola Falana and the tight-trouser-wearer Adriano Celentano (and their funky gals and safety gays) to take our minds off the situation...

Have a good week, dear reader.

Dead cat dance

Oh, yes. Monday again!

Thankfully the weather this weekend wasn't a complete washout (for once). I managed to get a few jobs done out in the garden on Saturday - in some quite warm sunshine on occasions! - and had a good chill-out yesterday.

Unfortunately work rears its ugly head once more - but at least I am happier than usual, as there's just these five days to go and I am off again until after Easter!

On this Tacky Music Monday, have another mindfuck, dear reader, courtesy of an old Italian TV spectacular:

Apparently it's a song about a dead cat. Bugger only knows why...

Have a good week, peeps.

La Wandissima

It's been a packed weekend, dear reader - the V&A's spectacular Diva exhibition on Saturday [more of that later, no doubt], followed by a very rainy day at Kew Gardens with Baby Steve and Houseboy Alex. I feel I really need another day off to recover...

But life determines otherwise, so here, to help ease us into the grind yet again on this Tacky Music Monday is a diva [in fact three of them] shamefully not featured in that exhibition, in a post I did @decadeago:

It has been ages since I featured that campest-of-camp grande signora of Italian entertainment, described in The Guardian as "a rather camp Latin mix of Mae West and Mistinguette", Miss Wanda Osiris.

But it is Tacky Music Monday, after all (and we always need cheering up at the start of a working week) - so here she is, in full "Norma Desmond" drag (and a bit croaky, but we always forgive an old broad many sins), topping a bill that includes two of our favourite Italian divas Mina Mazzini and Raffaella Carra, performing in a typically understated number, A Capocabana:

Wonderful...

Facts about Wanda Osiris:
  • Born Anna Menzio on 3rd June 1905 in Rome, she was 16 when she joined a vaudeville company, something that was almost unheard of during those strict times.
  • Often nicknamed "La Wandissima", she went on to become one of Italy's most successful stage performers of the 1920s to the 1950s.
  • Ground-breakingly flamboyant, she was credited with being the first to use chorus boys in her act. [She invented "safety gays"!!]
  • Among her myriad revues was Carousel of Variety in which she appeared with (among others) Josephine Baker and Anna Magnani.
  • She retired in the mid-'60s and after that only occasionally performed on television.

Wanda Osiris died on 11th November 1994, aged 89 - her obituary (in Italian, of course).

Have a good week, dear reader.

Pressure and Parisi

Yep. It's that time again.

Pook! That weekend just flew by - now it's time for work once more...

As we gaze vacantly upon the prospect of another week of edifying delights, on this Tacky Music Monday there's always the bizarre world of good ol' Italian televsion "spectaculars" to get us fired up - inevitably featuring the adorably (ahem) talented Miss Heather Parisi and her safety gays!

Gobsmacking.

Have a good week, dear reader.

Just too good to be true?

RIP, Jane Withers. Anyone who made Shirley Temple cry was my kind of gal.

The start of week #2 of my leave, and the forecast is still utter shit - there is a glimmer of sunshine at this very moment, but all around, the rain-clouds are gathering (and will do for the foreseeable future). Sigh.

Never mind, eh? Who needs unwavering sunshine and settled weather when we can wallow in the utter ridiculousness of Italian television?

Put your hands together, dear reader, for the Queen of Tacky Music Monday Miss Heather Parisi!

I'm exhausted now!

Have a good week, peeps...

Motivi per essere allegri

"John Coltrane's soprano, Adi Celantano
Bonar Colleano
Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3)
One, two, three!"

Ever wondered who all those people were in that classic Ian Dury number?

Well, today's birthday boy is one of 'em!

Adriano Celentano [for it is he] is a true "national treasure" in Italy. The man widely credited with introducing rock'n'roll to that country in the 1950s, in his eight-decade career he has sold millions of records, appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, and worked with just about everybody who was anybody in the Italian entertainment world, from Federico Fellini to Mina Mazzini, and, of course - our Patron Saint of Neck-breaking Head Flicks herself, Raffaella Carrà!

And this, dear reader, is their finest hour - something I stumbled across many moons ago that is so gob-smacking, so brilliantly camp, it made me thankful for the invention of the internet...

Nobody has a clue what Prisencolinensinainciusol actually means, but who cares? I love it!

Shoes, and ships, and sealing-wax

The time has come, the Walrus said,
To talk of many things:
Of shoes, and ships, and sealing-wax,
Of cabbages and kings
And why the sea is boiling hot
And whether pigs have wings.

- Lewis Carroll "The Walrus and the Carpenter"

In what little daylight I actually saw on the weekend [I am a complete "night owl" and treasure my long lie-ins on Saturday and Sunday], the weather was lovely and mild with blue skies, perfect for a bit of pottering and basking. Now, like a flash, it's over again, and I am reaching for the bloody work laptop...

Never be despondent however, dear reader, when on this Tacky Music Monday there's the utter madness of Miss Heather Parisi [singing about sealing wax for some fuck-knows-why reason], lots of glitter and spandex, safety gays and bizarre almost-but-not-quite-right frenetic dancing to save the day!

Italian television spectaculars. They never fail to deliver, even if our jaws are now on the ground.

Have a good week...

Ground Zero

Typical. Two days of hurricane-force winds and bleakness, and I (very reluctantly) wake up today at the start of another fun-filled week working from home to find glorious sunshine and the makings of a lovely day. I could scream...

As we grit our teeth for the next five days - on this Tacky Music Monday, who better than the utterly bizarre Renato Zero to cheer us up..?!

I think I might wear this outfit for my next Zoom meeting.

[More of the irrepressible Signor Zero here]

Take a deep breath

Another weekend has disappeared in a blustery, grey instant, and here I am again, working from home [and by dint of the latest missive from "on high", will continue to be doing so until the New Year!!!]

Depressing.

Never mind, eh? On this Tacky Music Monday, the aim of the game is to provide a suitably frenetic "wake-up call", and, to that end, there's "tacky"...

...and then, there's Italian TV!

I am always impressed when a song-and-dance "star" can't lip-synch to save her life, and her "safety gays" can't dance.

Have a good week, dear reader.

That Monday Feeling

I'm with Alexis!

It's gorgeous out there, and I'm sat in the living-room dealing with work stuff...

Never mind, eh? On this Tacky Music Monday, there is always Raffaella to cheer us up! A whole set, no less...

Oh, joy!

Have a good week, dear reader.

But there were times, dear, you made me feel so bad

Aaaaaarggghhhh!!!!

It's back-to-work time, after a fabulously bone-idle fortnight away for the Festering Season. My body is not equipped for an alarm going off; and why-oh-why did those Lottery numbers not come up..?!

Hey ho. As we prepare for the unfamiliar stinks and germs that constitute the daily commute from now on, let's treat ourselves to another of my "rediscoveries" - arising out of my ongoing project to fix broken links in my old blog posts - from 2014, this...
...let's cheer up the gloomy mood on this Tacky Music Monday with one of our favourite Italians, Miss Patty Pravo (and her gay sicurezza)!

She didn't want to do it, apparently. Neither did they.

Have a good week, dear reader. I won't.

Luna-cy

After another faboo weekend - shopping and a show; business as usual, really - we've arrived not only at the start of another week in the benighted office, but the Autumn Equinox, to boot. Nights are officially longer than days from here, dears!

Sob.

Never mind, eh? Why be glum, when there's another insane Italian television spectacular ready to cheer us up on this Tacky Music Monday?!

Miss Parisi is our saviour. Have a good week, dear reader!

Definitely no zero

After a beautiful sunny weekend, reality hits, as we embark on yet another week in the (ahem) delightful atmosphere of the office...

Bugger that! We're continuing our countdown to Gay Pride this weekend - and what better way to do that on this tacky Music Monday than with the most bizarre, most outrageous discovery we've had in ages?

Lords, ladies and gentlemen (and everything in-between), meet Renato Zero!

Wow. Now that's what I call a wake-up!

Monday, 24 June 2019

What's the Italian for "spandex"?

Sigh. Monday again.

Never mind, dear reader. We always have the bizarre world of prime-time Italian telly to take our minds off the drudgery of another week in the office.

On this Tacky Music Monday, here's the indisputable Queen of that genre to perk us up - Miss Heather Parisi!

Such talent.

Have a good week, peeps.

Oh, Miss Jones...

"April is the cruellest month", according to Mr T.S. Eliot, and it certainly has thrown a bit of eveything at us, weather-wise, this week - glorious sunshine alternating with gales, sleet, rain, and almost-freezing temperatures. The good news is that it looks like it may warm up on the weekend (thank heavens), so we know what that means - it's time to start planning for a party!

Who better to lead us in our mission than our Patron Saint of "Couldn't-give-a-fuck-what-you-think"-dom herself, Miss Grace Jones?!

Described on Pitchfork thus: "...Jones’ promenading in a frock and bustier through a stagy castle with human hand candle sconces, barnyard fowl, and a nearly naked prince has the power to broaden most rubrics", here is the lady in all her glory, doing what she does...

Thank Disco It's Friday!

I've got to do or die
I'm reachin' for the sky
I'd like to make you mine
You know I will in time
No retreating gotta do or die
No matter how you try
You'll never change my mind
I got to Do or Die!!

Indeed.

Have a good one, dear reader!

Ma che vacanza é

Another day, another wartime baby... Yesterday we celebrated the 75th birthday of one "Queen of Sequins", Barry Manilow. Today it is the turn of another; as to our amazement we discover that none other than Our Patron Saint of Dramatic-Head-Flicking Signorina Raffaella Carrà has hit the same milestone!

Raffaella Carrà is 75?!! Fuck.

On this Tacky Music Monday, let us celebrate the divine madness of the great lady. She was simply born to occupy our traditionally OTT start-the-week spot - fabulous costumes, frenetic choreography, safety gays and all - so here's a double-bill for your delectation...

Buon compleanno, tesoro!

Raffaella Carrà (born Raffaella Maria Pelloni, 18th June 1943)

Give me the moonlight

Monday again. Sigh.

Never mind, eh?

On this Tacky Music Monday, we have another preposterous wannabee-diva (newly discovered here at Dolores Delargo Towers), Miss Asha Puthli, to cheer us up - clad in an outfit created by the uber-camp Larry LeGaspi [read my recent blog about him], and (hilariously) pouting her way around a set that appears to consist entirely of papier mâché figures, on that most bizarre of Italian TV "spectaculars" Stryx...

Can it get any weirder..?

Have a good week, folks!

Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom tom

After a fabulous fortnight's break, it is time to bite the bullet and accept it - I am not Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham after all. I do, indeed, have to return to work. Oh dear.

However, there is - on this Tacky Music Monday - some respite. After all, who could not be but cheered up by the spectacle of our peerless Patron Saint of Trashy Italiana, Signorina Raffaella Carrà, singing a beloved Cole Porter standard, in "space", accompanied by a bevy of safety gays and other assorted backup clad as (variously) eye-patched robots, glittery space angels, and, most bizarrely of all multiple Aladdin Sanes?

Not moi!

If you thought Marika Rokk was weird, think on.

Have a good week, peeps! I won't.

Out of the ruins, out from the wreckage

There can be few better ways we would wish to start our week's countdown to Gay Pride in London next Saturday than by celebrating our Primo Italiano Patron Saint La Carrà's birthday!

Especially when she, and her set-designers, and her wig-makers, and her safety gays, and her plastic-costumiers, and her smoke-machine-operators have all had a little too much Prosecco - and decided to let loose on Tina Turner's Mad Max classic choon We Don't Need Another Hero...

Apocalyptic is definitely the word!

We love it.

Many happy returns, Signorina Raffaella Carrà (born 18th June 1943)

Monday, 6 June 2016

Easy

Another Italian wannabee-diva turns 50 today - and you couldn't ask for a greater contrast between she and yesterday's celebrant Miss Bartoli...

Signorina Angela Cavagna is described as "showgirl, model, television personality". The "modelling" bit appears to have gone as far as men's top-shelf magazines, but let's not split hairs. On this Tacky Music Monday, let's just hand over the mic to this triumph of art over nature - a double-bill, no less!

Che Fico!

Have a good week, peeps.

Angela Cavagna (born 6th June 1966)
