Vanaf vandaag gaan wij weer dansen *

What a fantastic trip we had to our beloved Amsterdam! And, for a change, there were five of us, as the usual "Tarts on Tour" (Me, Madam Arcati, Baby Steve and Houseboy Alex) we were joined by John-John - which made it all the more fun, as we were able to introduce him to things that he didn't see when he was there last [which was for my 50th birthday - gulp - thirteen years ago!]...

Five days of people-watching by day (at Trinity Cafe opposite our hotel on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, or St James Gate on Rembrandtplein, or the bar formerly known as the much-missed Amstel Taveerne, now The Mill), drinking, eating FEBO and at Eetsalon Van Dobben, wandering the grachten, more drinking, and generally enjoying ourselves - bliss.

We paid tribute to my favourite building in Amsterdam, the Tuschinski Theatre:

[click any pic to embiggen]

We "went true Dutch" at traditional bars such as De Haven van Texel, with its beautiful canal-side view, and the historic bruine kroegen ("brown café") Café Hoppe on the wonderfully-named Spui [the square at the end of the shopping street Kalverstraat; we went there for a welcome beer after trekking round loads of stores including C&A (a clothing shop that was beloved in the UK until it closed all its branches in 2000), and coming away with nothing]. We even spent an afternoon at Amsterdam's botanical garden Hortus Botanicus - with its fascinating butterfly house:

Our gorgeous student boys were back, getting up to their usual hi-jinks [often with their tops off, but we have no photo evidence of that, unfortunately] for their equivalent of "Freshers' Week":

We [obviously!] spent a few nights in some of our fave gay bars, including The Queen's Head [which, we discovered, really only comes into its own on weekends nowadays], the sleazy-and-fab Spijker Bar, and the ever-friendly and jolly Café Montmartre [now in another new location, as part of the busy "gay village" in Reguliersdwarsstraat, and renamed "Montmartre XL"].

Our very favourite of all is - of course - the oldest gay bar in Amsterdam [and possibly the world] Cafe 't Mandje, and its raucous traditional Sunday lunchtime Dutch sing-alongs:

On our very last day, before catching our plane, it was off to the Zeedijk again for the utterly joyous Hartjesdag festival, with its street party, complete with a free breakfast on trestle tables the length of the street, more traditional sing-alongs, followed by the traditional men-dressed-as-women and women-dressed-as-men parade! We love it:

Only one thing marred the celebratory mood, however. Our lovely hosts Karl and Josef at Hotel Anco - where we have stayed every year for at least a decade - are retiring, have put the business up for sale and have a new apartment just around the corner on De Wallen! How very, very sad. They've been like family to us. We have put our reservation in for next year just in case, but Karl said he will let us know if the situation changes [if it is no longer a hotel by then, for instance].

Now... what did we miss while we were away?

Our "colander obscura" captured dozens of little crescents, as the moon obscured the sun

But... did I bring anything back for your delectation, dear reader?

Of course - one of the Netherlands' most popular singers, whose songs were being played all over the place while we were there:

Is it good to be back?

NO!

[Vanaf vandaag gaan wij weer dansen = "From today we will dance again"; part of the lyrics of one of Mr Bronkhorst's songs in that medley, Kom allemaal maar in mijn armen]

UPDATE 6.05pm, Wednesday 19th August

I posted this at about 8pm yesterday, and it still hasn't shown up in the Blogger Reading List!

I tell you one thing I haven't missed, and that's the bastard Google gnomes and their broken systems.

Amsterdam vult mijn gedachten

Tarts on Tour! [click to embiggen]

By the time you see this, dear reader, we should be winging our way to my favourite city on earth [after London] - Amsterdam! What better way to mark the occasion than with this glittering version of one of that city's greatest "anthems"?

Aan de Amsterdamse grachten
heb ik heel mijn hart voor altijd verpand.
Amsterdam vult mijn gedachten,
als de mooiste stad in ons land.
Al die Amsterdamse mensen,
al die lichtjes 's avonds laat op het plein.
Niemand kan zich beter wensen
dan een Amsterdammer te zijn.

How fab is that?!

The pingelepingelepingelepingelepong you never realised you needed in your life

Yes! A Swarovski clog...

As the countdown nears its close - and we gather our skirts to get the gardens watered, the house in order for the Essex boys' arrival later, and to pack our bags for Amsterdam tomorrow, we need another dose of sing-a-long Dutch music to keep us going.

What better than one of our house favourites here at Dolores Delargo Towers, the fantabulosa Jasperina de Jong?

All together now..!

Wij willen geen nicotine, wij willen de mandoline
Van je pingelepingelepingelepingelepong
Picknicken is zo fijn

Indeed.

Ga je zingen, ga je dansen of je wil of niet?

Just two days to go...

...and no countdown to our trip to Amsterdam [on Thursday] would be complete without featuring our beloved "Dutch Super-Group" De Toppers! Especially with a medley of our fave Amsterdam songs [that I may have featured here once or twice, or more, previously...]:

Tracklist:

  • Geef Mij Maar Amsterdam
  • Een Pikketanussie
  • Aan De Voet Van De Oude Wester
  • Oh Johnny
  • Zo, Zo, Zo Is De Jordaan
  • Bij Ons In De Jordaan

Magnifiek! We love De Toppers.

We love Amsterdam!

Tijd voor een feestje

We are in a very celebratory mood here at Dolores Delargo Towers.

It is almost the weekend - as always, that is cause for joy in itself - but this one is particularly special, for come 4pm this afternoon I will not be back in the benighted office for a fortnight!

Once again, my birthday is almost upon us, and next Thursday Madam Arcati, Baby Steve, Houseboy Alex, John-John and I are off to my beloved Amsterdam for five days of high jinks, merriment, eating FEBO and wandering the grachten. Wonderbaar!

By way of a celebration, here's The Netherlands' finest Queen of Disco herself, Miss Anita Meyer:

[I think the biggest question here is "Why are they dancing in a swimming pool?"]

Dank disco is het vrijdag!

FOOTNOTE:

I'm still coming down to earth after seeing the brilliant Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the big screen in Leicester Square with John-John last night. Not just one of the very best Marvel superhero films I have seen, but one of the best films I've seen in ages...

Superhero films never win top Oscars, that much is an established tradition (for some reason or other), but amidst the "biff! pow!" action [and there's no shortage of that!], there's some damned good acting here. It makes the characters more human, and judging by the genuine gasps and murmurs amongst last night's audience (as well as my own reaction), carries some genuinely relatable emotional heft.

Do try and see it, dear reader. It's definitely worth it!

Of big cakes, robots, gays, Home Counties and Elsa's gazebo

Someone left the cake out in the rain...

It's another snippets post, dear reader:

  • Hartelijk gefeliciteerd, Mokum! news: Almost at the culmination of 750 hours of events and festivities [including Sail Amsterdam, which we saw in August], the 750th anniversary of the founding of Amsterdam was celebrated in Dam Square at 7.50am on Monday with a 75 metre strawberry sponge and cream cake (pictured above). There was enough, apparently, for 7500 slices, and residents queued in the rain for hours for a taste. Proost!
  • Showroom Dummies news: A collection of rare memorabilia, possessions and other artefacts once owned by Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider is heading for auction on 19th November, including his suitcase synthesiser, his flute and his vocoders, personal effects, photographs and even the bike he rode in the Tour de France video!

  • And finally: Among a whole host of random fellow celebrants including Evelyn Waugh, Dame Cleo Laine, Julia Roberts, Dame Joan Plowright, Auguste Escoffier, David Dimbleby, Suzy Parker, Gwendoline Christie, Bill Gates, Jane Alexander, Francis Bacon, Edith Head, Peter Hitchens, Hank Marvin, Matt Smith, Caitlyn Jenner, Joaquin Phoenix, Bernie Ecclestone, Wayne Fontana, Stephen Morris of New Order, and Czechoslovakia...

...it's our Patron Saint Elsa Lanchester's birthday! She wasn't just "The Bride of Frankenstein", you know, she also sang bawdy Cockney Songs, and we love them...

And the weather? Remarkably mild and sunny for Hallowe'en week...

Mokum zit voor altijd in mijn hart

We're back...

Baby Steve, Houseboy Alex, Madam Arcati and I had a fantabulosa five-day break in our beloved Amsterdam!

We always enjoy wandering the grachten, exploring the gay watering-holes on offer - including the entertaining The Queen's Head, the [newly-reopened in a new location] eternally jolly Café Montmartre, the generally sleazy Spijker Bar, and the Sunday sing-a-long at the longest-serving gay bar in the world Café 't Mandje...

...as well as non-gay ones such as [our most regular of all, given its location across from our Hotel Anco and the fact it's a perfect people-watching spot by the canal] Trinity Bar, [the former gay bar called De Engel van Amsterdam] Our Corner, another bar with a beautiful canal-side view De Haven van Texel, and the historic bruine kroegen ("brown cafés") Café Pieper, Café Hoppe and Café 't Papeneiland.

Hedonists, us..?

Of course!

We were there [as previously mentioned] a little later than we would normally be for my birthday, of course, for one of the biggest events of the Amsterdam 750 celebrations, Sail Amsterdam - with 10,000 ships and boats from over 20 countries, including some utterly breath-taking tall ships in full sail, it was quite spectacular.

Seamen everywhere!

Speaking of which - we were very pleased to be there for the Crew Parade:

We didn't only drink and people-watch, of course - although that was what we spent the majority of time doing - we did eat, mainly at the Amsterdam institution FEBO [as everyone there does!], we made our usual pilgrimage to the legendary Eetsalon Van Dobben, and we had plenty of other typical Dutch food along the way, including the best Dutch apple pie ever at the aforementioned Café 't Papeneiland. Hardly a vegetable in sight. As always.

It was a wonderful break, indeed.

What did we miss while we were away? Not a lot, to be honest. Gaza, Ukraine, Trump. The usual. Oh, and:

...and we missed the centenary of the simply divine Miss Honor Blackman, as well as the 95th anniversaries of the births of both Princess Margaret and Sean Connery.

But... did I bring anything back for your delectation, dear reader?

Of course:

Is it good to be back?

NO!!!

Amsterdam vult mijn gedachten

The grachten are beckoning us...

By the time you see this, dear reader, we will quite possibly have landed in the capital of gaydom, Amsterdam!

There is only one song I need to play, really...

It's a tradition.

"Normal" service will be resumed next Tuesday.

Of Wallen, Appeltaart, Jonge mannen, Dansen, Grachten, RIPs en Hartjes

We're still coming down to earth after another fantabulosa long weekend in "our second home", Amsterdam!

Madam Arcati, Baby Steve, Houseboy Alex and I wandered the grachten, spent hours just people-watching, visited sleazy flesh-pots (Spyker Bar is our fave) and bruin cafes, paid our tributes to Café Montmartre - for many years my/our best-loved bar in the 'Dam - which has closed after 42 years but is due to reopen in a new location sometime later this year, ate at FEBO and Eetsalon Van Dobben, sang along to Dutch songs at Café 't Mandje, and just basically enjoyed ourselves!

It was a joy to once again be in the centre of things [our hotel is in the Red Light District!] for "freshers' weekend" - where loads of gorgeous boys in white shirts and ties (or sometimes just topless) play silly games, drink and dance on boats, and make a lot of noise all over the place:

[see our visit to Amsterdam in 2019 for a photo from that year's event]

We were also, for the first time in years, encouraged - nay, cajoled - to dance by the faboo DJ at The Queen's Head! And dance. we certainly did - for several hours!!

[I would post the video evidence, but it's just too embarrassing]

A great discovery this year was the wonderfully historic Jordaan landmark Café 't Papeneiland, home of possibly the most delicious Dutch apple pie ever!

And, to finish - on our last day, before we needed to depart for our flight home, we once again caught the "indelibly Amsterdam" Zeedijk local festival - where a full breakfast is laid out all along the street for all to consume, and men dress as women and women dress as men - Hartjesdag!

We departed, tired but happy.

Is it good to be back?

NO!!

Did we miss anything while we were away? Ukraine's still having a bit of a morale-boost as President Zelenskiy's surprise incursion across the border continued to hold, much to that cunt Putin's chagrin; the papers were, and still are, all over the news that a tornado struck a super-yacht owned by one of Britain's wealthiest self-made billionaires and several mega-rich people are missing, presumed dead as a result; a fire in the roof of a wing of historic Somerset House in London took five fire engines and a crew of 100 firefighters to extinguish - with (thankfully) no damage to any of the building's art collections; the world's oldest woman died, aged 117; and, finally - some boffin or other with more time on his hands has proposed that ice-lolly-licking should be in the UK school curriculum.

We missed marking the 90th birthdays of Love Letters singer Ketty Lester and the fine old British actor Sir John Standing, Downton Abbey creator Lord Julian Fellowes' 75th, the 60th of Show Me Heaven singer Maria McKee - and, of course, the birthday of Our Glorious Leader Madonna (66)! Departures during the weekend included US talkshow host Phil Donahue (whose show became popular in the UK when shown on late-night ITV in the 1980s), "Gunner 'La Di Da' Graham" in It Ain't Half Hot Mum John Clegg...

...and one of the sexiest men ever to have graced a screen, the gorgeous Alain Delon! RIP, mon cher! [more M Delon]

And finally - did I bring anything back for your delectation, dear reader? Natuurlijk!

This:

Proost!!

Want in Mokum ben ik rijk, en gelukkig tegelijk

By the time you read this, dear reader, we should be in the skies across the North Sea heading for our beloved Amsterdam!

Only one song will do (it's traditional!):

Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Dat is mooier dan Parijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Mijn Mokums paradijs
Geef mij maar Amsterdam
Met zijn Amstel en het IJ
Want in Mokum ben ik rijk
En gelukkig tegelijk
Geef mij maar Amsterdam

"Normal" service will resume some time after our return on Monday...

Cafeetje culture?

Ha! I don't have "that Monday feeling" - I'm on holiday, we're off to see Bernadette Peters: Live from London tonight...

...and the countdown has begun to our annual "pilgrimage" to our beloved Amsterdam on Thursday! As we know, the Netherlands is one of the biggest sources of cheese (in all senses of the word) in the world.

Lo and behold, on this Tacky Music Monday - something that really could not have been cheesier if it tried!

Have a good week, dear reader!

Monday, 5 August 2024

Hallelujah!

Monday again...

Yet again, the fates decree that weekends (especially really enjoyable ones) must fly by faster than any time spent in work.

Never mind, eh? This is my last week in work before I have a fortnight's annual leave - with my birthday looming on Saturday, and a long weekend in Amsterdam on Thursday next to look forward to!

On this Tacky Music Monday, what better wake-up call could there be than a combination of the Netherlands' finest "dressing-up queens" De Toppers and the post-millennium version of 80s legends the Weather Girls?

Campness abounds!

Have a good week, dear reader.

De koning van het levenslied

We have a centenary to celebrate, and I almost missed it! One hundred years ago yesterday, the Dutch musical legend that is Johnny Jordaan was born.

So revered is Mijnheer Jordaan in Amsterdam that he has a whole Plein named after him, complete with a statue (later joined by those of fellow musical legends Tante Leen, Manke Nelis and Johnny Meyer):

Not really so surprising, as most (if not all) the great man's wonderful sing-a-long "levenslied" numbers are indeed dedicated to our favourite city, like these...

...and this one, which I play every year as we depart for our annual long weekend in Mokum:

Johnny Jordaan (born Johannes Hendricus van Musscher, 7th February 1924 – 8th January 1989)

Tuesday, 22 August 2023

Ja als ie maar groot is, twee vingers hoog is! *

"And so we're back. From outer space..." well, Amsterdam actually.

What a fantabulosa time we had, too!

We (Madam Arcati, Baby Steve, Houseboy Alex and I) always "do it large" when we spend a long weekend in fair "Mokum" - but this time, as an ongoing part of my 60th birthday celebrations, we literally "pushed the boat out"...

...for the Madam had only gone and got us a trip around the grachten in our own private vessel!!

Mooi!

To top it all, we disembarked at the private jetty of Amsterdam's premier grand Hotel Americain afterwards, where we were entertained by a lovely band playing Jazz/Swing standards and had a slap-up steak dinner. I felt even more like a Queen than usual...

Other than that special Sunday, the weekend was a whirlwind of meandering this beautiful city, taking in the wonders of the wonky canalside buildings, the historic Red Light District (where our hotel The Anco is located), the magnificent architecture of my beloved Tuschinski Theatre, the shopping streets, the Dam, the brown cafés on De Spui square, and (of course) visiting our favourite gay bars - Café 't Mandje, Spijker Bar, the Queen's Head, Amstel 54 and the best of 'em all, Montmartre - as well as doing as the locals do by eating mainly at FEBO and Van Dobbens [not a shred of roughage to be had!].

Ending with a bang, on Monday - our last day while waiting to get our flight home - we actually managed to catch the camp-as-tits Hartjesdag parade of men-dressed-as-women and vice-versa:

I could not have asked for more for my milestone birthday!

Did we miss anything while were away?

The journalistic and broadcasting world mourned the loss of a national treasure, the greatest chat-show host this country ever had, Sir Michael Parkinson, whose eponymous BBC show was a peak primetime hit that spanned all the way from 1971 to 1982 and again from 1998 until its final iteration (by then on ITV) in 2007. In that long, long run he interviewed myriad top stars including Bette Davis, Dame Edith Evans, Kenneth Williams, David Bowie, Peter Ustinov, Muhammad Ali, Liberace, Fred Astaire, Orson Welles, James Stewart, John Wayne, Mickey Rooney, David Niven, Gene Kelly, James Cagney, Robert Mitchum, Billy Connolly, John Lennon, Tina Turner, Madonna, Dame Edna Everage, Shirley MacLaine, Robert Redford, Joan Rivers, Oliver Reed, Helen Mirren, Ingrid Bergman, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Luciano Pavarotti, Peter Cook, Miss Piggy, and many, many more besides. And was sometimes upstaged by some of them:

Needless to say, the big news for football-loving Brits (and British media) was the fact that the women's team lost their World Cup attempt to Spain in the final; there was acres of coverage (as there has been for months) of the horrific trial of child serial killer nurse Lucy Letby, which ended in her imprisonment for life; the furore over the (probably) criminal fire and subsequent demoltion of The Crooked House pub in the Midlands continued to enthral the meejah; and there was a rather dramatic turn of events in the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the destruction of a high-tech Russion bomber way inside its own territory. Good.

However, as always when we come back from holiday I hear you cry, dear reader, "But what did you bring us back, Jon?!"

How about this?!

You do, of course, need to be fairly tanked-up on lager and Flugel shots to really "get" it I suppose. Try this one:

If that one doesn't get you going, you are just going to have to come along with us next time and experience the sheer buzz of a crowd sing-a-long to songs like this in Café Montmartre on the Amstel to see exactly why we adore it so...

Is it good to be back?

No!!!

Mijn Mokums paradijs

It's the final day of the countdown to our break in Amsterdam, dear reader and, no matter if I have posted it many times before [not least a year ago], and no matter that De Toppers provided my Tacky Music Monday joy just last week - I make absolutely no excuses for featuring this absolute epitome of "Dutch-ness" yet again!

It's becoming one of my many "it's traditional" moments:

Tracklist:

  • Geef Mij Maar Amsterdam
  • Een Pikketanussie
  • Aan De Voet Van De Oude Wester
  • Oh Johnny
  • Zo, Zo, Zo Is De Jordaan
  • Bij Ons In De Jordaan

Magnificent. We love De Toppers!

We love Amsterdam!

Tuesday, 15 August 2023

Hell, you set me on fire

Cheese, indeed.

As we continue our countdown to our much-needed break in "Mama Mokum", Amsterdam, it would not be complete without a showing from at least one of that country's innumerable 1970s/80s girl-bands [cf. Luv, Dolly Dots, Babe, Risqué, Maywood - most of whom I have featured regularly on this very blog]!

Enjoy..!

Facts:

  • "Doris D" was in fact born Debbie Jenner in Skegness, UK.
  • She's most noteworthy for the fact that she was the vocalist on Lipps Inc's Funkytown [to which, of course, this song bears no resemblance...]!
  • She worked with the aforementioned Babe, and choreographed the aforementioned Dolly Dots.
  • After "The Pins" split up, she released a moderately successful aerobics LP, and went on to be a notable fitness instructor.

We love the endless tackiness the Dutch can muster - roll on Thursday!

Pingelepingelepingelepingeleponging as we speak, sweetie!

As we count down the hours to our sojourn to the magnificent city of Amsterdam this Thursday, what better way to kick off proceedings on this Tacky Music Monday than with one of our house favourites here at Dolores Delargo Towers, the fantabulosa Jasperina de Jong?

All together now..!

Hallelujah!

Ironic as it is, after the grimness and greyness of recent days weeks, this morning it's sunny with blue-skies-a-plenty. Just in time to go back to the grind...

Never mind, eh? I'm only in for three days - because Thursday is my 60th birthday - and then it's the countdown to our pilgrimage to the fantabulosa city of Amsterdam the weekend after next!

On this Tacky Music Monday, what better way to begin with the unlikeliest megastars on the planet, our favourite OTT band, Netherlands' finest De Toppers!?

Heerlijk! Have a good week, dear reader.

Grachten, sex dolls - and Bacardi Limon?

Behold the tarts in their natural environment... [click any pic to embiggen]

And so another fantastic weekend in our beloved Amsterdam - our first in two years - is over. Sob.

Needless to say, we all had a grand old time, meandering the grachten, people-watching at various bars in De Wallen, Leidseplein, Zeedijk, Rembrantsplein, Prinsengracht and along the river Amstel, having a laugh with many of the locals we have known for years - in our hotel Anco and bars Amstel 54 (former Amstel Taveerne) and Montmartre - and (of course) sampling the (slightly) seedier nightlife in another old fave Spijker Bar:

Yes, they're dolls

We paid due homage to the venerable Cafe 't Mandje - now under new management [see here and here], so no "Dutch sing-a-long Sunday" for us this time [although the new manageress said it would be coming back, starting in September, so fingers crossed it'll be going when we get there next year for my 60th] - and to the Queens' Head and its famous window display:

Het is zo mooi!
