Wunderbar!

Only a week late [and somewhat shame-facedly, after all that build-up of "more to come" that I gave her a few weeks ago!]...

...I feel we really need to celebrate the fact that Our Patron Saint of Crazy, Fraulein Nina Hagen blew out 70 candles on her cake last week! (Gulp!)

Our Nina is a remarkable woman of many talents, and since she first emerged into the limelight - across of the ruins of the Berlin Wall that had once divided her birthplace in the East from the rest of the world - she has certainly embraced a whole range of genres. All in her inimitible and unique style, of course!

Here she is in her full-on Goth-Punk heyday in 1982:

...here, covering a Glam Rock classic originally by Sweet:

...from Glam to glamorous, here's her tribute to wartime star Zarah Leander:

...and she also had a rather brilliant foray into House music:

...but whoever thought she would turn a Doris Day number into a dance track? She did, obviously!

...and she even fronted her very own Big Band:

To finish - and to top it all - here is one of my favourite clips of the lady, surprisingly duetting with none other than that beloved purveyor of multilingual smoothness Miss Nana Mouskouri! When worlds collide, indeed...

There is no-one quite like Catharina "Nina" Hagen (born 11th March 1955).

All hail!

I don't know why I don't know why

Heavens. You know you're getting old when you discover...

...that the faboo Goth-before-"Goth"-was-even-a-thing Mr Dave Vanian of seminal punk band The Damned is 65 years old!

I think some thrashing music is in order; their debut single was, after all, the first punk record to hit (the lower echelons of) the UK charts way back in 1976, 45 years ago this month:

Is she really going out with him?

I got a feeling inside of me
It's kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don't know why I don't know why
I guess these things have got to be

I gotta new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town

See the sun see the sun it shines
Don't get too close or it'll burn your eyes
Don't you run away that way
You can come back another day

I got a new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town

I never thought this could happen to me
This is strange why should it be
I don't deserve somebody this great
I'd better go or it'll be too late

I got a feeling inside of me
It's kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don't know why I don't know why
I guess these things have got to be

I got a new rose I got her good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can't stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town

Interesting fact about Mr Vanian - he was in fact "The Monmouth Vampire", the mysterious apparition that made the local headlines in Wales back in 1980! As he revealed in an interview in 2018:

He was recording the band’s Black Album at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth when he decided to step out for a breath of fresh air one night and take a stroll to a nearby cemetery.

“There was a full moon and Monmouth in the full moon… you can see everything, It was very bright because there’s no city there; it’s just countryside.

“So I went for a walk to the local graveyard, which was, like, a mile down the road… and I walked around and as I left and started heading back up the lane to the studio, I was caught in a Mini’s headlights as I was coming out of the cemetery, and the car veered off the road almost and then screamed round the bend.

“The local newspapers, the next few days, had a thing, where a woman claimed she had seen the ghost of a vampire coming out of the local cemetery. It became a big deal and I decided to say nothing.”

I'm sure he loved it!

Ahoy! Ahoy!

Yes, it's a timeslip moment again - way back to an era of uncertainty and economic stagnation, 1979: the year Maggie Thatcher arrived to drag the country kicking and screaming into a new decade; the year of Ayatollah Khomeini, Jimmy Carter, The Muppet Movie, Disco Demolition, the Carl Bridgewater murder trial, Moonraker, the end of Pol Pot's reign of terror, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Donna Summer, the assassination of Harvey Milk, Life of Brian, Sandinistas, Pope John Paul II, Mad Max, the fall of Idi Amin, Off the Wall, SALT II, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, and the "fourth man" Anthony Blunt; the births of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Will Young, Chris Pratt, Jamie Cullum, Shola Ama, Pink, Kerry Ellis, Cazwell, Jonny Wilkinson, Heath Ledger, Adam Levine, Sudoku, James McAvoy and the spreadsheet; and the year that Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Gracie Fields, Joyce Grenfell, Richard Rodgers, Stan Kenton, Minnie Riperton, Mary Pickford, Norman Hartnell, Barnes Wallis, Sid Vicious, Skylab, Merle Oberon, Peter Butterworth, Norrie Paramor, Van McCoy, Michael Wilding, Rhodesia, John Wayne, Barbara Hutton, Ted Cassidy ("Lurch") and Blair Peach all died.

In the news in March forty-one years ago? MP and Thatcher confidant Airey Neave was murdered by an IRA bomb in the underground car park at the House of Commons, the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty was signed, Scots voted for a separate assembly (but were defeated by the electoral rules) and Welsh voters rejected devolution in referenda, a general election was announced in May following a vote of no confidence in the Jim Callaghan government, Voyager 1 sent back impressive photos of Jupiter and its rings, and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident caused mass panic Stateside; in the ascendant (literally) was the brand new Space Shuttle Columbia, and the compact disc was launched; but we waved a fond farewell to the beauteous Richard Beckinsale, who had a heart attack aged just 31. In our cinemas: California Suite, The Deer Hunter, Damien: Omen II. On telly: Tales of the Unexpected, Worzel Gummidge, Mork & Mindy.

And our charts this week in March 1979? Now That's What I Call A Top Ten:
10: Boney M - Painter Man
09: Abba - Chiquitita
08: Edwin Starr - Contact
07: Sex Pistols - Something Else/Friggin' In the Riggin'
06: Blondie - Heart Of Glass
05: Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force?
04: Lene Lovich - Lucky Number
03: Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
02: Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army
01: Bee Gees - Tragedy
However, lurking just outside the higher echelons were a few songs destined to upset this line-up; as eclectic a mix as what was already there, including Chic, Dire Straits, Art Garfunkel, Queen and Gary's Gang... and this lot!

Gosh. Did we actually still do the "pogo dance" in '79?! That audience doesn't seem too enamoured [then again, half of them had probably spent the evening trying to avoid Jimmy Savile in the corridors].

Time flies, etc...

The Ice Queen

"There is a fun, flippant side to me, of course. But I would much rather be known as the Ice Queen."

Gulp. Our Patron Saint of Fishnets, Miss Siouxsie Sioux is 60 years old today!

I have always adored Siouxsie. Ever since first seeing her on Top Of The Pops strutting like some unearthly Amazon to Hong Kong Garden, I just knew she was something very different; an awesome talent with an awesome stage persona, and excitingly scary. As Ben Hewitt in the Guardian put it so succinctly: she has a "macabre mystique". Siouxsie was second only to Debbie Harry among my adolescent icons.

Irredeemably photogenic, hers has to be one of THE faces of the 20th (and any other) century - instantly recognisable. Her musical legacy, too, is wide-reaching and well recognised. Without her (and the Banshees), there would be no "Goth movement". Her songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Massive Attack and Red Hot Chili Peppers; myriad artists - from Morrissey to PJ Harvey, from Bono to Sinéad O'Connor, from Courtney Love to Ana Matronic - have all paid their due homage to her influence.

There is only one Siouxsie.

And thank heavens for that! Here are some of my choices from her vast repertoire...

Peek-a-Boo (Spec Goth Disco Edit):

However, this remains my all-time favourite (and is among my top tunes ever) - Happy House:

Wears a coat that's black and long

It happens. All those ground-breaking, scary, energetic "rebel hearts" of our youth are getting older...

Mr Dave Vanian - the man who was (alongside Siouxsie and Robert Smith of The Cure) a "Goth" before "Goth" was invented - blows out sixty candles on his cake today! Gulp.

Mr Vanian and his band The Damned were pioneers of Punk; among the original clutch of bands who defined the genre and the first to get a hit single way back in 1976 (New Rose) - even before the Sex Pistols. In its original incarnation the band included notorious members Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies; by the 80s, Mr Vanian was the only original member in the band.

It was at this late stage that they (he?) achieved their greatest commercial success. And among those later hits was this rather fab one:

Chain-store chain-smoke

When the combined talents of Miss Eleanor Steber, HM The Queen, Mr Harry Wayne Casey, Messrs Orzabal and Smith, a heatwave, Miss Audrey Landers and Fraulein Marika Rokk together garner no interest, no comments whatsoever, one begins to realise that this blogging world is - as it surely began - indeed a very solitary exercise.

I'd like to imagine everyone is actually out there sipping fine champagne on a yacht with Dames Joan and Shirley and the Aga Khan somewhere off the Costa Smeralda, or lapping up yet another anecdote with Iris Apfel in The Carlyle Hotel in New York... Wouldn't we all?

However, in reality I assume everyone's actually either non-stop staring into their phones for the latest craptastic Tw*tter revelation about - yawn - a Swift, a West or a Kardashian, or else they're busy bragging about their latest gorgeous holiday/meal/car/prostitute [delete as appropriate] to some friend of a cousin-in-law's sister's daughter on F***book...

Hey ho.

Here's a jolly little number from Miss Marianne Joan Elliott-Said (aka the late, lamented Poly Styrene; of course):

Bind me tie me
Chain me to the wall
I want to be a slave
To you all

Oh bondage up yours, oh bondage no more!
Oh bondage up yours, oh bondage no more!

Chain-store chain-smoke
I consume you all
Chain-gang chain-mail
I don't think at all

Oh bondage up yours, oh bondage no more!
Oh bondage up yours, oh bondage no more!

Word to live by, methinks.

Remarkably, Britain is celebrating FORTY YEARS of Punk this year...

My little Cho-Cho

Heavens! We have lost another legend...

Love him or hate him, Malcolm McLaren was a true musical pioneer. His penchant for New York's underground led him to try and introduce a new type of music from across the pond to the unsuspecting disco-and-glam-crazy UK in the 1970s - music that attacked old genres, refused to conform to rock "norms" and would never ever be featured on mainstream radio. That music - spectacularly unsuccessful at first, as the buying public largely ignored the likes of the New York Dolls - became known as "Punk".

Later seen for what it was (impressive marketing), Mr McLaren created the Sex Pistols, and paved the way for Siouxsie & The Banshees, mohicans, bondage trousers, Bow Wow Wow, Adam Ant, Boy George and everything that came afterwards. The world would never be quite the same again, thanks to him.

A sad loss indeed...

Clash songs on ukuleles!

Apparently BBC Radio 6 Music is so enamoured of the fact that it's 30 years since the first album by the Clash that they have decide to get a large number of people to play their music on ukeleles for a forthcoming special programme!

I haven't heard anything quite so bizarre since the William Shatner cover of Pulp's Common People, or maybe the Richard Cheese version of Fuck You Like an Animal (Nine Inch Nails)...

I CAN'T WAIT!!!
