Ceol nua! *

"One is a DJ, one is what one plays..."

As we live in hope that there might be at least some sunshine over this long weekend (as opposed to looming grey skies and blustery winds), it's time, methinks, for a little selection of some of the "newer" music that has caught my ear of late:

Let's open with something fairly low-key and jolly - a very welcome new choon from probably the only boy-band that has actually progressed to assume the "national treasure(s)" mantle...

Speaking of sunshine - this sublimely summery number from Reigate's most notable export since Dame Margot Fonteyn, Disclosure, really lifts the spirits [especially so for me, as it is a mere four weeks to go before we are back in Spain!]:

Who else but the fantabulosa Mr Bill McClintock would ever have thought that 90s boy-band NSYNC and death-metallers Slipknot would ever fit together? But they do!

House favourite eccentrics - beloved here at Dolores Delargo Towers, and over at Hexenhausli DeVice - Haute & Freddy are back, and as completely fruitloop as ever...

Multi-award-winner Raye is certainly more Lily Allen than Kate Bush - but her new release (a very surprising collaboration with Oscar-winning film music composer - everything from The Lion King to the recent Dune remake - Hans Zimmer) is quite the work of art. It took a few watches/listens, but I love this!

Even the mighty Raye, however, isn't top of this list. Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson (CMAT)'s lyrics in the opening verse are rather scathing...

I was at the
Jamie Oliver petrol station
I needed deli but god I hate him
That man should not have his face on posters

...which makes it even more remarkable that the fat-tongued Mockney git makes a personal appearance in the video! Regardless - it's utterly, utterly brilliant!

As ever, dear reader, let me know your thoughts...

Sunshine and new choons

RIP, Phil "The Collector" Swern, BBC radio producer for six decades, the man behind Ken Bruce's "Popmaster" quiz, and famously the owner of every single that entered the charts since they began in 1952...

On this beautifully warm and sunny late summer day, it seems fitting, methinks, for a wallow in some of the "newer" music that has caught my ear of late...

Let's open proceedings with something suitably sunshiney, its video featuring gorgeous young things cavorting in some exotic location, in various states of undress:

[the song samples Ennio Morricone - Dance On from the film Così Come Sei (aka: Stay As You Are) (1978), in case you were wondering]

By complete contrast - a holiday road trip much closer to home, to accompany another classic-in-the-making from one of our favourite bands:

Here's a faboo discovery - weird, indeed:

Next, the return of not just one, but two house favourites!

This track apparently took four years to get finished! It's good, but what took so long?

To conclude, saving the best to last - when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, this happens. Love it!

As ever, I welcome your thoughts, dear reader...

Damn right it's better than yours!

Sharing the day, as she does, with an assortment of random notables such as Dame Janet Baker (91), Princess Margaret, Aubrey Beardsley, Count Basie, Kenny Rogers, Usain Bolt, Kim Cattrall, Peter Weir, Friz Freleng, Patrick Juvet, King William IV, Barry Norman, Joe Strummer and Liam Howlett of the Prodigy, it's the 45th birthday today of Kelis (Rogers)!

Always more successful over here in the UK than she was in her native USA, it all began with this one [which I cannot deny I found irritating when it was first released, but - gulp! - 21 years down the line, it has become a bit of a camp classic, and we still sing it!]:

Surprisingly, there are quite a few other songs in her repertoire that - probably because they were all collaborations - she gets less credit for than she deserves, including these three:

Of all her work, however, this one [from summer 2010] remains my favourite:

Faboo!

Infected with restless whispers and cheats

Whew. The weekend is almost here - and it's time once again to get ourselves in the mood for a party!

It's amazing what little-remembered-but-brilliant choons one uncovers when trawling through old blog posts (making repairs) - and here, from five years ago, is just one of them...

...take it away, Miss Mary J Blige - and Thank Disco It's Friday!

I've been infected with restless whispers and cheats
They're manifested in words and the lies that you speak
I've been infected with restless whispers and cheats
They're manifested in words and the lies that you speak
I've been infected with restless whispers and cheats
They're manifested in words and the lies that you speak
I've been infected with restless whispers and cheats
They're manifested in words and the lies that you speak

Because I played the fool for you
Because I played the fool for you
Because I played the fool for you
Because I played the fool for you
Because I played
Because I played
Because I
Because I

Love it!

Have a great weekend, dear reader.
