I'm breaking *

Our Cymbidium orchid is spectacular again this year!

I had a flurry of activity this afternoon in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers! It was lovely and sunny, despite the really chilly wind, and I spent a few hours systematically pruning back all our fuchsias, as well as salvias and ferns that hadn't already been tackled. Knackering, it may have been - but it's all getting ready for the summer to come [and, indeed, our clocks go forward tonight and British Summer Time begins tomorrow]!

Meanwhile, on a day of birthdays that include Sir Dirk Bogarde, Sir Michael Parkinson, Dame Flora Robson, Mike Newell, Maxim Gorky, Lord Neil Kinnock, Vince Vaughn, Reba McEntire, Sir Richard Eyre and - ahem - Lady-fucking-GaGa...

...today marks 460 years since the foundation of the fabled walled city of Valletta, capital of "plucky little" Malta!

To mark the occasion, how about their surprisingly faboo Eurovision entry from back in 2021?

She's obviously a Lizzo fan.

Of Vikings, knickers, dykes, rocks, illuminations, kinky priests and la, la, la, la, la, la

Not for the first time, a Viking Longship has sailed up the Thames into London; this time it's peaceful

On a grey, mizzly and wet day - it's another snippets post, dear reader:

  • Not so grim up North news: The annual Blackpool illuminations - designed by the flamboyant Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen - have been switched on by pop muppet Olly Murs. There has to be some reason to go there this late in the season...
  • Hallelujah here we come news: An ex-Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to obscenity for being caught having sex with two dominatrices atop a church altar in Louisiana has asked for his phones and cameras back. You couldn't make this stuff up!
  • And finally: RIP Señor Manuel de la Calva. Who? I hear you ask. Well, he was founder-member of "Spain's answer to the Beatles" Dúo Dinámico, and co-wrote one of Spain's most famous Eurovision Song Contest winning entries way back in 1968. And here it is!

They just don't write lyrics like that anymore...

You know what I'm looking for

Oh, blessed relief - the weekend's almost in sight. Thank fuck for that! I've had quite enough of this week. However, John-John and I are off to see the much-anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps at the cinema in Leicester Square this evening, so there's something rather exciting to look forward to!

Meanwhile - you know you're getting older when...

...you discover that none other than our beloved Gina G celebrates her 55th birthday this weekend! Gulp.

I need no excuse to play this old fave yet again - and Thank Disco Gina It's Friday!

You cannot help but smile whenever you hear that one - have a fab weekend, dear reader!

I feel it's safe to dance alone

I may not be in work this week, but by heavens! It feels like I've done several shifts of hard labour - admittedly, yesterday's slog rearranging the myriad pots of plants we have in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers on and around the faboo new shelving I constructed on Wednesday was extremely satisfying (and I am sure there will be plenty of photos forthcoming, no doubt), as it looks absolutely fabulous and gives a whole new dimension to the tiny space we have to work with!

Still a load of (less rewarding) jobs to do today, however - hoovering, cleaning the bog, cleaning windows, that sort of thing - before I can embark upon the final decorations (bunting, flags of all nations) for tomorrow's party to celebrate the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

YAY! It's the "Gay World Cup"!!!

Speaking of which...

...Thank Disco The Roop It's Friday!

Enjoy the weekend, folks - whether or not you choose to (or ar able to) enjoy the madness of the biggest live event in the world!

What the Hell?

We ask you: is Britain fucking trying to lose Eurovision?

After a narrow escape with Sam Ryder, is the UK choosing our Eurovision entry so we fail and dodge the expense of hosting its humiliating spectacle?

Hannah Tomlinson, entomologist: “The group we’ve chosen reached the quarter-finals of 'The Voice' in 2019. That is by definition the cream of Britain’s musical talent.”

Denys Finch Hatton, barrister: “67 years of flamboyant freaks with light-up nipples singing upside down in a flaming longship winning, and we enter a girl group. Nul points in the bag.”

Oliver O’Connor, town crier: “Remember that year we almost sent them Katie Price seven months pregnant in a pink PVC catsuit? In retrospect it was obvious we’d Brexit.”

Will McKay, theatrical dresser: “Where’s it being held? Switzerland. Neutral. So it would seem the organisers of Eurovision knew continent-wide war was coming.”

Steven Malley, roofer: “But nobody will vote for us anyway, because everyone hates us. We’re Europe’s Millwall.”

The Daily Mash

Of course.

But I think I'll let you, dear reader, be the judge...

Thoughts?

Withdrawal symptoms

I am craving a Tinto de Verano!!

Yes, we're back - and in full recovery mode - after a lovely and full-on week on the Costa del Sol for Madam Arcati's birthday. We went once again en familia; this time with the Madam's sister Carol (again) and nephew Stu (for the first time) - and, of course, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves...

With only one "off day" - on Sunday night we had torrential storms in the wee small hours, and it remained so horrid there were only a few bars open along the paseo on Monday (all of which we visited, of course) - the sun was very welcome upon our pale British skins. A little shopping here, a lot of lovely food there, and - ¡claro está! - industrial quantities of booze everywhere, it was a much-needed week of utter hedonism. Bliss!

Now we're back in the truly miserable, cold, wet and dank UK, what did we miss while we were away..?

Not a lot, to be honest. There was endless coverage of the orange madman that Americans voted into power - his threats of tariffs against just about anyone including the EU, his crazy talk of taking over Gaza, and, in fact any of the shit that pours from his mouth. Speaking of crazy, our current government appears to be presiding over a remarkable crash of our economy - flat growth and rising inflation all round - which has served to cheer everyone up no end, as one might imagine. Especially if Chancellor Rachel "Nanny Stern" Reeves is genuinely [the screaming headline appeared in The Mail (aka Mein Kampf), so should be treated with extreme caution] considering axing or significantly reducing the annual £20,000 cash ISA (Individual Savings Account) tax-free allowance - my preferred way to save!

In other news...

Meanwhile, at Gobbler's Knob this Groundhog Day, "Punxsutawney Phil" predicted that the US will get six more weeks of winter this year; a woman flew from Cornwall to Malaga in Spain and then up to Manchester to collect her car because it was £250 cheaper than it would be to get the train; and the whole country of Sri Lanka was plunged into an electricity blackout - because of a monkey meddling with a power station!

We missed celebrating the centenaries of both Jack Lemmon and our Patron Saint of Booze Miss Elaine Stritch, the (gulp!) 95th birthday of Robert Wagner, the (double-gulp!) 70th of John Travolta, the 50th of Natalie Imbruglia and the 40th of the ultra-sexy Cristiano Ronaldo...

...and we also missed marking the death of television favourite Brian Murphy (the eternally hen-pecked "George Roper" in both Man About the House and George and Mildred [the original series behind the US hits Three's Company and The Ropers]; he later featured in Last of the Summer Wine).

Finally - did I bring anything back for your delectation, dear reader? How about Spain's entry for Eurovision 2025? It's still (just about) Tacky Music Monday, after all:

[Yes, the singer is the same Melody (minus her "Vivancos" but with another set of safety gays altogether) who was responsible for our regularly-featured earworm El Baile de los Gorilas]

I may still be on holiday all this week, but...

Is it good to be back? NO!!

Flugt og fart, indeed

Why is it that short weeks [it was May Day on Monday] seem to drag even longer than normal ones?

Never mind, eh? This one's almost over - and at 4pm precisely, the laptop closes for another seventeen days!

We are very much looking forward to our excursion to the delights of Spain again, this time taking in Seville (on Wednesday), Cadiz (on Thursday) and Jerez (on Friday), before we head on to more familiar territory (on Saturday) with a week in our usual haunt of Benalmadena! Yay!

Before all that, of course...

...tomorrow is the Eurovision Song Contest final!

We expect the usual houseful of pissed friends in preposterous costumes, far-too-much-food, scoresheets and lots of shouting and cheering at the telly. Bliss.

Let's get in the mood, shall we, with a verrrry late-70s vibe from Denmark - and Tak Disco Det er fredag!

Disco tango à la carte
Og godt med garniture, flugt og fart
En jockey uden hest, der disc'er op
Med nyt fra USA, soul, reggae eller pop

Apparently.

Hope you're all singing along, peeps.

[Lyrics in English:
Disco tango à la carte
And lots of decorations, flight and speed
A jockey without a horse, who dishes up
With news from USA, soul, reggae or pop

Thought for the Day - Eurovision

Let's hope the juries aren't too po-faced when they allocate points to "Our Olly" and his gay boxers!!

Our Eurovision Song Contest Party is looming... The second semi-final's tonight!

The music, the madness

A Bank Holiday in the UK rained-off? Surely not? That never happens... Except. Every. Time.

Sigh. We had such plans, after a remarkable evening of brilliant performances by the troupers of Postmodern Jukebox live at the Palladium last night [More on that later, no doubt], for some productive pottering in the garden, to get things presentable for the influx of guests for our Grand Eurovision Song Contest Party next weekend... We'll just have to concentrate on all the housework it takes to prepare the house for the occasion instead (a less rewarding chore, of course).

All that said, it is still a Tacky Music Monday, and it's just crying out for a Eurovision-themed "wake-up call"!

Here's a selection of - ahem - "favourite" tacky moments:

And, finally... This. Actually Happened.

Needless to say, none of 'em actually won.

We're on countdown now, anticipating our gang's usual flurry of OTT outfits, the music, the madness - the shouting! - that accompanies "The Gay World Cup".

Meanwhile, have a good week, dear reader!

We looked like nuts

"In my honest opinion we looked like nuts in those years. Nobody can have been as badly dressed on stage as we were." - Björn Ulvaeus.

It is fifty years this weekend since Abba stormed the previously stuffy old Eurovision Song Contest (held in 1974 in the UK's gayest city, Brighton, aptly enough), and embarked on a world-conquering musical journey in the process. Suffice to say, nothing quite like them nor their song Waterloo had ever been seen before...

My, my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

My, my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

So how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose -

Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

Half a century ago? Gawd, I am old...

Dizzying

It's another "snippets" post today, dear reader!

  • Sad news: We raise our glasses in tribute, as the world bids a fond farewell to eccentric centenarian style maven Iris Apfel, "Patron Saint" here at Dolores Delargo Towers, doyenne of magazine covers and fashion shoots across the globe at an age when most grannies are content to put their feet up and watch daytime telly, who has departed to preside over Fabulon. "I don't do minimal" was her watchword. Amen to that! [More Iris here, here, here, here and here]
  • "Woke gone mad" news: Children's classic Mary Poppins is the latest film to be subject to the seemingly never-ending tide of revisionist editing of history, as the British Board of film classification has increased its rating from "U" (unclassified) to "PG" (parental guidance needed), due to that fact that it uses the word "Hottenot" to describe South African native tribesmen. WTF?!
  • Rimming on TV news: Queer As Folk - the original UK Channel 4 series, not the tacky American remake that went on far, far too long - is celebrating 25 years since it shocked, and changed, the television-viewing world. Here's that rimming scene, for your delectation. You're welcome.
  • Dubious "gay allies" news: None other than millionaire thug Mike Tyson, after being challenged by the utterly fearless Peter Tatchell, has made a surprisingly positive statement about gay rights, saying: “I oppose all discrimination against gay people, OK?”.

  • And finally: Britain's favourite sexy gay pop-minx Olly Alexander has finally released the video (and full version) of his UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024! Verrrry Pet Shop Boys...

I would give you an update on today's weather, but it's shit, so I won't bother...

Let's discoteque right at my home; it is okay to dance alone

So, here we are at the end of another trying week at work, but on the cusp of The Big Event. It is indeed "Eurovision Eve", and the anticipation is palpable...

In the latest in my mini-series of highlights(!) from the recent history of the contest, let's practice those moves - and Thank Disco The Roop It's Friday!

Enjoy the madness - and have a great weekend, dear reader!

London's weather today...

...is swimsuit-worthy!

Allegedly.

And, of course, Here's an appropriate Eurovision number for the occasion:

This is the most miserable Spring...

Life on Earth, but not as we know it

Can anything this Saturday beat the craziness of Moldova's 2011 entrants Zdob şi Zdub?

We've hit the midway point between the two semi-finals, in our continuing countdown towards Saturday's gathering of the clans for the "Gay World Cup" - the Eurovision Song Contest!

Time to roll out this old chestnut, methinks, in all its brilliance:

Love it!

Of coronations, subtle political gestures, and hamsters

[click to embiggen]

It will not have been lost on even the most casual viewer that the coronation carpets were in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. "A happy coincidence" is the official line - but we know that "The Firm" is much cleverer than that...

As we struggle to readjust after all that pomp and majesty to the dullness of work - and, as we also begin our countdown to the next great event of the season, the Eurovision Song Contest this Saturday - let's wallow, shall we, in the antics of the Ukrainian entry in the contest back in 2014, and the infamous debut of the "hamster-wheel man"?!

Have a good (rest of the) week, dear reader.

Disco Gumby

Hip, hip Hooray! The first of May - outdoor sex begins today!

Even if it is another Bank Holiday [and, my heavens, I have been making the most of the lovely warm weather we've been having at long last - my back is killing me again from clearing and re-potting, clearing and re-potting, ad infinitum the past couple of days!], it's still the start of another week, so...

...with Eurovision looming, on this Tacky Music Monday here's something I posted earlier.

Kejsi Tola (for it is she) was eulogised by the witty people over at the "Eurovision Lemurs" site [2023 update: site appears defunct] thus:

Staged in front of an old The Price Is Right set, Albania’s 2009 entry features Tola in a pink tutu, a rhinestone-encrusted green man who looks like Disco Gumby and two b-boys dressed like Ben Stiller mimes. Classic, classic magic.

Perfect.

Have a good week, dear reader...

Flying the Flags

We're only a few weeks away from the biggest event this country has seen in decades!

No, not the Coronation - the Eurovision Song Contest (being held in Liverpool)!!

For no particular reason other than I want to, here are just fifteen of my personal favourites from the world's largest, shinest and campest music festival (now in its 67th year)...

The Eurovision Song Contest final will be held on 13th May 2023.

I can't wait!

Friday, 10 March 2023

I wrote a song; I feel much better now

Yay! It is almost the weekend and, once again, for that we are extremely grateful.

It is, however (disappointingly) continuing to piss down out there, and it doesn't look like there's much relief in sight....

...never mind, eh? Here's Sheila and her lovely safety gays, in loads of tinfoil and lycra, to take our minds off it - and to Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend (sleet or no sleet), dear reader!

PS

The UK has just announced its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in May this year - and it is a bit of an earworm, I must admit:

Let me know your thoughts on that one.
