Mozart's spinning in his grave

After a lovely weekend in Dorking for Lou's 60th [more on all that later, no doubt], it's back to the same old shit-show again...

...but there is salvation at hand on this Tacky Music Monday, courtesy of a little something from the archives.

How about Belgium's answer to Anthea Turner murdering a beautiful aria by Mozart - and with a dance remix?!

If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will!

Have a good week, dear reader.

This odd diversity of misery and joy

Grrrr. Monday. It's grim.

There are some things that are certain to cheer one up at the start of a week, however!

One of them is our beloved Sir Noël Coward, The Master, whose 125th birthday it is today!

The other is the assembled talents of a bevy of drag queens. From Belgium.

Put 'em together on a Tacky Music Monday, and what do you get? This old fave!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Pour Moi, Moi, Moi, Moi, Moi!

Another day, and another obscure piece of news inspires me - that of the departure for Fabulon of one Lou Deprijck.

Who? I hear you ask...

Mr Deprijck was rather recherché, even by Belgian standards - songwriter, singer, surrealist, collaborator with the avant-garde film director Jan Bucquoy, co-founder of The Underwear Museum [yes! it does exist], occasionally known as Billy Belushi, Charlie Brown Family or J.P. Hawks...

...and the man behind myriad hits, including this:

...and, best of all - this old fave, a classic if ever there was one!

Oh, how we loved it! [Allegedly, it's not M Bertrand singing on it at all, it was actually Mr Deprijck.]

RIP, Francis Jean "Lou" Deprijck (11th January 1946 – 19th September 2023)

Purple Sunday

It's bizarre. Here we are in November, Bonfire Night's over, and with this grotty weather it hasn't really got light at all this weekend, yet in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers, not only are the "usual suspects" - autumn flowers like salvias and fuchsias - still giving a fabulous show (and they are still covered in bees!), other flowers such as the "Black-Eyed Susan vine" (Thunbergia) have only just started flowering, and the Cobaea scandens [above - click to embiggen] in "the top field" at the end of the garden has gone completely, utterly mad! Too many flowers to count, in a five-foot-by-five-foot curtain hanging from the washing-line! Shame one needs a brolly and galoshes to traverse the jungle and the dead-leaf-slime carpet to actually see them...

Changing the subject completely, a somewhat obscure name appeared in the obituaries yesterday. Miss Nicole Josy has departed for Fabulon (or at least one of its tackier ante-rooms).

Who? I hear you cry.

Well, as one half of the duo who were the Belgian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1973, she created one of the most - ahem - memorable impressions in the history of that eternal kitsch-fest. As I said when when I featured it for Tacky Music Monday back in January 2017:

It has purple bell-bottoms and matching platform boots. It has backing singers in proto-Golden Girls fright wigs. It's completely incomprehensible. It's Baby, Baby by Nicole & Hugo!

Once seen, it can never be "unseen".

No, no, please don't

OK, I know it's a Bank Holiday and a long weekend [yay!], but there is still a party atmosphere in the air at the end of any week.

So, of course, we need to get our satinette leggings and knee-boots on to greet our forthcoming (hopefully) sunny long weekend - with a most peculiar Europop number...

...and Thank Disco It's (Good) Friday!

What the fuck was that all about? No idea.

Have a fantabulosa Easter weekend, dear reader!

Cacahuètes!

Sad news on the weekend - Mademoiselle Annie Cordy, chanteuse, showgirl, film star and one of the most popular entertainers in France and her native Belgium is dead. She was 92. So esteemed was she that in 2005, she was bestowed with the title Baroness by the King of the Belgians. In her seven decade career, she acted and performed alongside a vast array of stars including Gérard Depardieu, Petula Clark, Charles Bronson, Michel Serrault, Simone Signoret, Tino Rossi, Orson Welles, Claudette Colbert, Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour...

...and our Patron Saint of luxuriant hair, Dalida! On this Tacky Music Monday, this is a real eye-opener:

RIP Annie Cordy, Baroness Cooreman (born Léonie Cooreman, 16th June 1928 – 4th September 2020)

[More Annie here and here]

Have a good week, dear reader.

Lord knows I'm not a school girl in the flurry of her first affair

Another "ghost from the vaults" has emerged, as I continue my journey of repair and restoration of old blogs. I've almost finished going through 2012, and en route I rediscovered this long-forgotten delight.

Once upon a time, in a drag bar in Brussels, this happened...

Quand je suis Gaie

It's a constant joy to discover a new, previously unheard-of diva here at Dolores Delargo Towers!

And lo and behold, courtesy of our Froggie housemate, we now have Mlle Annie Cordy in our lives. Despite being a trésor national in France, Mlle Cordy is actually Belgian.

Judging from what I have found of Annie Cordy on the interwebs (and there is a lot), she is a real "music hall"/showgirl all-round entertainer - a singer and comedienne - as well as movie star. Her career has spanned seven decades, and at the age of 84 she shows no sign of stopping!

On this Tacky Music Monday, let us indulge in a little of Annie's talents, starting with this bizarre number - Chaud Cacao:

Here she is "going gay"...

And here she is just last year in 2008, performing a medley of her hits for an adoring audience - her final song in this medley is quite smutty by all accounts, involving a naughty priest...

We love her!

Facts about Annie Cordy:
  • So beloved is she in her homeland, the King of the Belgians granted her the title Baroness Léonie Cooreman (her real name)! How grand...
  • She sang for the wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956.
  • In 1972, she was the star of the original French version of Hello, Dolly!

Spinning in his grave...

Don't concern yourselves about work, dears - this has to be one of the best Tacky Music Monday pick-me-ups I have encountered in a long time!

Courtesy of the Lovely Mike at Pop Trash Addicts [yet again!], witness one of the latest hits from Belgium, as what appears to be their answer to Anthea Turner murders a beautiful aria by Mozart - in a dance remix, yet!

I need a lie down...
