Nouvelle musique

It has been a while. However, here's another of my (increasingly irregular) round-ups of some of the newer music that has caught my ear...

Before I start - courtesy of The Quietus, we hear that the saintly David Bowie has permitted the use of a new track of his called Blackstar as title music for a new TV series The Last Panthers. Intriguing, indeed:

And with that interlude, on with the show...

Hallowe'en is mere weeks away now, so how about we open our selection with some costume ideas from the mysterious Swedish duo I Am Karate and their atmospheric Elevate?

Speaking of ghosts, it would appear that someone has been picking up some tips out of the ether from the late, great Marc Bolan... Here's BØRNS and Electric Love. I want his jacket!

Sticking with "70s-grooves-updated", here's house fave band here at Dolores Delargo Towers The Young Professionals, and their version of Abba's S.O.S.:

From 70s sounds to something that more resembles the early 80s - here's the exotically-titled Story of the Running Wolf and Electric:

Oh my. What to say about the fantabulosa Violet Chachki (this year's winner of RuPaul's Drag Race)? Words fail me. Thanks once again to the lovely Henry at Barbarella's Galaxy for introducing me to Bettie. She needs a spank, apparently..

Since we (sob sob) didn't have our usual pilgrimage to Amsterdam this year, here to remind us what we missed is one of the weirder dance hits that's been entertaining the Dutch this year - Lil Kleine and Ronnie Flex, who are on Drank & Drugs. Apparently. So bad, it's addictive!

What's hard and sticky and sweet, and we can't get enough of it? Yes! It's our scrumptious houseboys Kazaky - and their delicious Milk Choc!

One of the "summer club hits" that passed me by until recently, here's the maestro DJ Bob Sinclar with the joyful vocals of Miss Dawn Tallman and Feel The Vibe:

And finally, no it's not "Jelly Time". It's DJ Jellyfish and the dance craze you are never going to get right this year - Boom Boom Jellyfish! [Featuring my favourite camp dance instructor, ever]:

As ever, enjoy! And let me know what you think...

Fire up the smoke machine and put on your heels

In general 2012 was not one of the best as far as our musical tastes here at Dolores Delargo Towers were concerned. An awful lot of the new music around was of the tawdry, "urban", deadly dull and mindless kind. Even some of the hoped-for new music from established artists - George Michael, Mika, Robbie Williams, even the Pet Shop Boys - was underwhelming (even though I have featured the latter many times during the year, I cannot bring myself to count any of their songs as highlights). Much of the music that really made an impact was old stuff (given the fact it was the Jubilee and the Olympics, which relied heavily on nostalgia, this is not a surprise), including the wonderful reunion of Marc and the Mambas at the Meltdown Festival, and much of Kylie's musical output (if rehashed with an orchestra).

Nevertheless, as is my wont at this time of year, I have selected twenty songs - with a little difficulty - that perhaps represent the best (in my opinion) this wet, gloomy year had to offer. So here goes...

Despite the fact we in the UK had absolutely no summer at all to speak of, in June we had a glut of choice music all of a sudden. One of the choicest was Mr Cosmo Jarvis and his incredible performing groinage - with Love This:

Another mid-summer fave was a little Gallic number by Dombrance featuring Sourya - The Witch:

Fabulously kooky Melbourne duo Parralox returned with the very entertaining single Sharper Than A Knife, first featured here in September:

That eternal pop hopeful from Blackpool Little Boots launched herself into the world of Disco back in July, with very pleasing results - it's Headphones:

Our Glorious Leader Queen Madge threw everything into promoting her new album MDNA during 2012, yet the pop world (tainted by eternal sniping from GaGa-ites and ageist journalists alike) failed to be set alight by any of it - despite her triumphant Superbowl appearance. The highlight of Madonna's musical year for me was Offer Nissim's remix of Girl Gone Wild (featuring the ever-gorgeous Kazaky), which I featured back in May:

Speaking of powerful camp gay icons, the music world here at Dolores Delargo Towers would be somehow incomplete without Amanda Lear - and, true to form, back in February she delivered the goods with the magnificent La Bête et la Belle:

A debut single that really caught my imagination was Solomon Grey's Firechild, as featured in November:

The Scissor Sisters made a very welcome return to form in April with the fantabulosa Only The Horses. [Sadder news followed towards the end of the year, when they announced they were "pursuing solo projects" for a while. No, not splitting up, of course.]

If ever there were to be an obvious successor to the Sisters' crown, it would be the ever-wonderful Hot Chip - who bounded back into our lives in June (a productive month it seems) with the fantabulosa Night and Day:

One of the most catchy (if possibly the least cool) tracks of the year was another from June, in the form of the folksy tones of Rumer and P.F. Sloan:

The ever-reliable Young Professionals treated us to a rather fab new number earlier this month - Be With You Tonight:

We missed seeing the decadent-sounding Mollyhaus at the Big Gay Lifestyles Show this Autumn - shame - I still love their Love Machine (as featured in May):

Speaking of the Gay Lifestyles expo, it would be churlish of me not to feature one of the highlights of that day, our friend Marcus Reeves's stunning new single Black Tears:

Once again from June, the superb Irrepressibles treated us to a new musical outing (and a semi-nude video to boot) - here's Arrow:

One of my fave Welsh artists Bright Light Bright Light had a killer of a song out in October - I loved it, it's Feel It:

It fell to one of the "old-timers" Miss Gloria Estefan, however, to provide us with the style and decadence we want and need from a dance number - her superb Hotel Nacional from way back in February was a treat!

Still echoing through my brain from November - courtesy of the incredible tonsils of Haringey's finest, Adele - is the theme to another of Britain's reasons to be proud during 2012, the new James Bond film Skyfall:

THE musical memory of 2012 for me has to be seeing our beloved Princess Kylie on stage for the first time at (one of the rare sunny days this year) Proms in the Park! Celebrating all year her 25th anniversary - with appearances for the Jubilee and many other guest slots on stage, film and TV, and an "Anti-Tour" of b-sides and rarities to boot - Miss Minogue's Abbey Road Sessions album is sublime, as is this, the single (featured in October) Flower:

Almost, but not quite, my favourite song of the year is Georgian Lesson 1-6 by the mad-as-hatters DeLaDap (as featured in late November):

However - and this is unusual for me to have two tracks by one artist in my favourites of the year - but there can only be one triumphal anthem for 2012. It just had to be the magnificent Scissor Sisters and Let's Have a Kiki!!

"And work and turn, and hu-hu-honey!"

Happy New Year!

[Let's hope it's a better one for music.]

Where the action is

Time once more, my pretties, for some of the newer music I have taken a shine to lately!

I am thoroughly sick and tired of waiting for the new Cher video to accompany her much-leaked single (from her first new studio album in a decade) Woman's World, so here is the fabulous Charlie Hides instead:

And here is the single itself (audio only). It's rather reminiscent of Strong Enough, but that's no bad thing...

[2019 UPDATE: audio version no longer online]

To compensate for the distinct lack of Cher-herself-ness, how about a little twisted gay burlesque? Thought so. Here's this year's Steve Strange/Jobriath wannabee, the performance artist known as Garek - Save The Queen, indeed!

I know I have featured Parralox - and this song - before, but I could not resist re-posting when I saw their brand new video for Sharper Than A Knife. It's rather fab:

Thanks again to the lovely Henry over at Barbarella's Galaxy, I have discovered the brilliant new release from that rather electro-tastic Danish combo Electric Lady Lab (here with Kato). With an excellent video to boot, they're Alive:

Another welcome return for the ever-fabulosa Young Professionals, who have become a firm fixture in my musical tastes over the last couple of years. With its customary (but unfortunately this time very brief) cameo from our fave gender-bender Uriel Yekutiel, the video features a fashion parade of the "fire on ice" collection by French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. It's their new single, Be With You Tonight:

Saving the kitschiest for last - a discovery that has filled me with great joy, especially as we have a long-awaited week in Benalmadena to look forward to in the New Year! Here is another of those pound euro-shop-divas that Spain seems to specialise in, a sort of cross between Amanda Lepore and Dana International, it's the enigma that is Yurena with her new single Go:

As ever, enjoy - and let me know what you think...

L'Shana Tova

I am reminded that today it is Rosh Hashanah, aka Jewish New Year.

What better way to send our greetings to our Jewish chums than with one of Israel's finest performers (and eternal house favourite here at Dolores Delargo Towers), Mr Uriel Yekutiel?

On this Tacky Music Monday, let us ease ourselves into the awfulness that is another week in work by rehearsing some faboo dance moves with Uri:

Fantabulosa - I expect to see you move-perfect by the end of the day!

The great musical round-up 2011

OK, It's that time of year when all thoughts turn to trying to remember what music "rocked our boats" during the last twelve months.

To that end, here are (in no particular order) the Dolores Delargo Towers Top Twenty Songs of 2011!

Let us open with the very cool Eastman ft Neve - Greedy Eyes, from July:

Even cooler, Jessica 6 - White Horse, from March:

Herr Styler - Snow in Paris was toast of the town here at the Towers in January:

The beautiful Sound of Arrows - Nova, first featured here in April:

A very welcome return for a gay pioneer, Darren Hayes - Black Out The Sun (here in its remixed form), from September:

Speaking of gay, gay, gay - the anthem that never was, Sir Ari Gold featuring LaBelle's Sarah Dash - Sparkle, featured here in September:

Duran Duran - Girl Panic was a fantabulosa return to form for a long-standing favourite group in November:

Continuing the theme of "welcome returns", Mari Wilson - O.I.C, released earlier in the year, was a discovery here in December:

Not something I am proud of, but I still love Selena Gomez - Love You Like A Love Song, from September:

The sleaze-tastic Traci Lords - Last Drag, from November:

A song that was shockingly ignored by everyone, Beth Ditto - I Wrote the Book, from February:

For once my taste and that of the great unwashed collided, as Example - Changed the Way You Kiss Me became the big chart-topper of the summer, featured here first in March:

A chart could not really be a chart without at least one from the UK's "great white hope": Adele - Rolling in the Deep, as featured here way back in January:

One of my fave discoveries of the year, The Young Professionals ft Uriel Yekutiel - D.I.S.C.O, from July:

The magnificent Will Young - Jealousy, returned to our arms in style in August:

A song (and an artist) that is indeed very popular round here, Eric Saade - Popular, who wuz robbed at Eurovision in May:

Speaking of "we wuz robbed", our own Euro-contender Blue - I Can, was first revealed here in March:

A close contender, and thus in the Top Three, is Martin Solveig ft Dragonette - Hello, featured here in January:

Snapping at the heels of the top slot is the anthem of our last holiday in Spain: Luciana - I'm Still Hot, which I first played on our return in February but seems to have been around for the whole year (including the infamous Betty White version):

And finally, there has to be a winner, and so at Number 1 is (of course) the irresistible Sak Noel - Loca People, which first featured here in September, and has been buzzing round our eardrums ever since:

There will be plenty of omissions, and songs that have completely slipped the memory no doubt, but that is the nature of any Top Twenty.

However, as always, enjoy!!

Spin that disc...

Once more, it's time for a little update on the newer music I have discovered recently, and once more it's a little trek around the world...

Opening the whole shebang is the brand new single from Israeli geniuses The Young Professionals (whose fantabulosa version of D.I.S.C.O. I featured back in July) - the superb 20 Seconds, its video once again featuring the marvellous gender-bending Uriel Yekutiel:

A constant source of inspiration to all bloggers everywhere, the lovely Thombeau over at form is void has been on a bit of an Etienne Daho kick recently, which inspired me to seek out a little more of the French musical genius than I already knew.

And so it came to pass that I discovered this catchy little number that the great man released just recently in France. Featuring a lady by the unlikely name of Calypso Valois, here's the rather fabulous Amoureux Solitaires!

Travelling North, here's a rather good new Swedish artiste - Emmon, with her Siouxsie-esque new single Slottet. [It means "castle" apparently]:

Back to Blighty. I have really tried to persevere with the new Erasure song When I start to (Break it all Down), but it has not yet hooked me in. It just doesn't sound Erasure-ish enough! Thank heavens for Steve Smart & Westfunk...

And to finish we're off to Spain! [Not literally, more's the pity...] with one of that country's top DJs Sak Noel with his bizarrely catchy Loca People (What the Fuck):

Enjoy!

Popalicious

Once again it's time for a cosmopolitan selection of recent(ish) music that I think is worth blogging about...

Let's start off in Neath in South Wales (a very good place to start - especially if you are seeing it in the rear view mirror!), with Bright Light, Bright Light and the magnificent Disco Moment. I love this, it's 'arf tidy!

Off to South Africa we go next, for a most wonderful video for the new single by Locnville, Stars Above You - hypnotic stuff. Oh, and they're twins, and they're gorgeous - what's not to like?

The Young Professionals hail from Israel, and are fronted by out-gay local superstar Ivri Lider. This is their first single - their interpretation of Ottowan's D.I.S.C.O., in their own special way, supported by Israeli demi-drag goddess Uriel Yekutiel - and it's rather superb...

Just before Pride it was Canada Day which was celebrated in Trafalgar Square, and in a nod to our biggest Dominion, here are a couple of new discoveries from Toronto. First, the rather fabby Austra with a remix of their new single Spellwork:

...and here's the Bowie-wannabee Diamond Rings with Something Else:

To finish, we go from the slightly-serious to the downright kitsch. This is nothing new (in fact it hails from 1998!), but it's new to Dolores Delargo Towers. Thanks once again to the lovely Henry over at Barbarella's Galaxy - here, with a blatantly tacky rip-off of Boogie Oogie Oogie, is Pure Sugar with Delicious. How gay can you get?!

Enjoy!
