It's a Heartache

"I wanted to be a singer, not a star. There's a difference between wanting to be famous and wanting to sing well. I have never gone out of fashion. And do you know why? Because I never sought it. When you don't seek it, it's always with you."

We here at Dolores Delargo Towers are distraught at the sad news that Swansea's finest export Miss Bonnie Tyler has donned her last pair of leather trousers and departed for the great pyrotechnics-dry-ice-and-wind-machine-equipped stadium in Fabulon.

We adored her for her down-to-earth, no-nonsense personality, her bounce-backs and - of course - her vocal talents. She's gone far too soon...

Facts about Our Bonnie:

  • Her uniquely husky singing voice was apparently the result of an operation to remove vocal nodules in the mid-1970s.
  • From working in a local shop, the then Gaynor Hopkins won a local talent contest in 1969 and launched herself as a singer under the name "Sherene Davis".
  • Finally, her big break came in 1975 when a talent scout spotted her, brought her to London to secure a record deal, and suggested she ditch "Sherene"; so Bonnie Tyler was born.
  • Through her husband, property developer Robert Sullivan, she was related to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and attended her wedding to Michael Douglas.
  • In the 1970s and 80s, she became one of the best-selling artists in the world, with a string of million-selling singles.

Speaking of hits, here are two of her early ones, before she ever met Jim Steinman:

Regarding the "Steinman years", I posted their collaboration Holding Out for a Hero back in May [when the news first hit that Bonnie was in a coma], so how about this, that rarely gets an outing, despite its outrageously camp video:

No tribute on this sad day would be complete, of course, without this song. No, not the original, but the hilarious "literal interpretation" video of her campest ever single - Total Eclipse of the Heart!

RIP, Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins, 8th June 1951 - 8th July 2026).

We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks

Hoo-bloody-rah for that! The weekend's almost upon us, and it's time to celebrate!

As today would have been the birthday of that great "rock opera" composer Mr Jim Steinman - what better way to kick off proceedings than with a dance version of one of his most flamboyantly camp numbers, that he wrote for Swansea's finest Miss Bonnie Tyler - in a Stock Aitken Waterman production, no less:

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great one, dear reader!

Every now and then I fall apart

“I’ve no intention of retiring! Look at the wonderful Sir Tom Jones. He’s got 10 years on me, his voice is awesome, and he’s still doing it. I like what I do."

We like what she does, too.

Many happy returns to the faboo Miss Bonnie Tyler - Welsh icon and doyenne of the dramatic power-ballad - who blows out seventy candles on her cake today!

I have played the piss-take "literal" version of her magnum opus many, many times before - not least in my tribute to the maestro behind it Jim Steinman on his death in April, and in my post celebrating "Our Gaynor"'s 65th - so I thought why not, for the first time, have the original..?

I bet you say that to all the boys

"I've been called over the top. How silly. If you don't go over the top, you can't see what's on the other side."

The maestro Jim Steinman - who, it was announced yesterday, has departed for Fabulon (carrying a smoke machine and and amp cranked up to eleven, no doubt) - was renowned as the purveyor of the most excessive, high-camp rock odysseys this side of Freddie Mercury...

...such as these (for individuals who were not entirely unfamiliar with the concept of campery: Cher, Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler and Andrew Eldritch)!

[That's Mr Steinman himself, doing the "Wolf with the red roses" schtick]

Peculiarly restrained for him, he also co-produced the West End show Whistle Down The Wind with Andrew Lloyd-Webber - and this:

And finally... I don't care how many times I have featured it over the years - this version of Mr Steinman's magnum opus of camp never fails to make me smile!

RIP, James Richard Steinman (1st November 1947 – 19th April 2021)

Messing up my close-up with a floating blue curtain

Yesterday's picnic got a little bit wet'n'windy...

Rather reminiscent of a Bonnie Tyler video, we thought...

We'll be holding on forever

"It is certainly not hard to get motivated. Watching people sing along and put their hands in the air is a very powerful thing."

"I wanted to be a singer, not a star. There's a difference between wanting to be famous and wanting to sing well."

"I have never gone out of fashion. And do you know why? Because I never sought it. When you don't seek it, it's always with you."

"When I was young, I used to wear a lot of wigs, and I was running on stage at a gig and tripped over and it fell off. It was in the 1970s, and Swansea were doing really well in the league, and most of the team were there. I almost died, but I picked it up, put it back on my head and carried on."

The fab-a-las (as they say it in Swansea) Bonnie Tyler is sixty-five years old, which is rather scary, as is the fact she's also celebrating 40 years in the business...

We love her!

Facts about Our Bonnie:
  • Her uniquely husky singing voice is apparently the result of an operation to remove vocal nodules in the mid-1970s.
  • Through her husband, property developer Robert Sullivan, she is related to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and attended her wedding to Michael Douglas.
  • Her hits Total Eclipse of the Heart and It's a Heartache have estimated sales of over 6 million units each, and are among the best-selling singles of all time.
Speaking of hits...

... and, of course, the hilarious "literal interpretation" video of her campest ever single - Total Eclipse of the Heart!

Many happy returns, Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins, 8th June 1951).

Once upon a time there was light in my life

The last (almost) total solar eclipse until 2090 is due over London at 9.30 this morning.

Of course, London will be under its usual blanket of grey cloud, so we'll hardly notice...

Never mind, eh? It's almost the weekend, and there's an obvious choice to help us celebrate - Miss Nicki French and her dance cover of Bonnie Tyler's over-emoting classic!

Total Eclipse of the Heart? I doubt it.

Thank Disco It's Friday? Definitely!!

Have a great weekend, one and all.

And here's some very useful advice on watching the eclipse, courtesy of... The Clangers!

I know you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am

"For me there is no opposite sex. For me there is only identity and desire."

It's another "fabulous at 50" celebration today (Thursday 9th May) - the sublime Mx Justin Vivian Bond!

A multi-talented persona - writer, singer, painter, and performance artist - Mx Bond was also the creator of Kiki DuRane, an ageing, alcoholic, female lounge singer and one half of the fantabulosa Kiki and Herb (who we went to see at the Southbank Centre back in 2005). Here's their tribute to this year's Eurovision hopeful, Bonnie Tyler. A unique rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart...

Mx Bond prefers to be referred to by the prefix "Mx", the pronoun "v" (as opposed to "he" or "she" or variants thereof), and describes v's gender as trans. For a full explanation visit the Justin Vivian Bond website.

Many happy returns to a true diva, by whatever description!

Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat

I haven't been so excited since OK magazine published those hilarious photos of Liza's ill-fated wedding, or the day I met Fenella Fielding!

Why?

Because none other than the gravel-voiced Gaynor Hopkins from Skewen in Neath - better known to the world as Miss Bonnie Tyler - has been selected to represent the UK in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, that's why!

Just hearing her magnificent 40-fags-a-day vocal chords brings back a whole host of memories, not least the superb world-beating choreographed "Big Dance" at the Pride festival in Trafalgar Square back in 2010...

We wuz there... and we did this!

And here is the lady herself, in the "literal interpretation" video of another of her classic belters, from 30 years ago this week, Total Eclipse of the Heart. This never fails to make me laugh:

We're starting our chant from this moment on: "Bonnie! Bonnie! Bonnie! Oy! Oy! Oy!"

I need a lie down...

Il était une fois une femme amoureuse

Happy birthday to Swansea's finest! Miss Gaynor Hopkins from Skewen (better known to the world as Bonnie Tyler) is 60 years old today! (Good grief!)

From Lost in France in the long hot summer of '76 to occasional retro tours and Hollyoaks cameo roles today, Miss Tyler has made a magnificent impact on the music scene across the world with her raspy "40 fags a day" voice. And she is a bit of a gay icon on the quiet too (not least for all those lesbian rumours...)

Without further ado, here she is with a recent French re-make of her greatest hit, the histrionics-heavy Total Eclipse of the Heart...

Many happy returns, Miss T!
