Got to be some good times ahead

It may only have been a short week, but it has been a complete pain in the arse! I have been counting down the hours for it to end...

Now we are almost here. Our "gang" is gathering after work to go (again in my case) to the V&A's magnificently camp DIVA exhibition before it closes next week, so there is cause for celebration already!

Speaking of Divas - here's one who is (obviously) featured in the exhibition:

Thank Disco Divas It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, dear reader!

Beware of the Boys*

The delightful Ranveer Singh is my choice of Mithai!

Today is the feast day of Diwali - the Hindu "Festival of Light". True to form, we here at Dolores Delargo Towers are regularly "entertained" at this time of year by explosive fireworks night after night (some of which might be to do with this celebration, some might be early revelry to mark Bonfire Night this Friday; or indeed they might be for other many-and-varied celebrations in our multicultural neighbourhood from now until well into the New Year).

Regardless, raise a glass of Sharbat cocktail to those (often surprising) artists of Indian origin who have contributed to the world of popular music - including these...

...and then there's this [which was sampled in one of our favourite mashups ever]!

Diwali ki Shubhkamnayei!

[* "Mundian To Bach Ke" = "Beware of the Boys" in Hindi]

P.S.

Scarily, it is the sixtieth birthday today of Ralph Macchio, aka The Karate Kid!

Gawd! I had such a crush on him in the 1980s - and it is somewhat surprising to discover that he is in fact two years older than me...

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

On this date 45 years ago, one of the most influential rock music singles of all time first hit the #1 slot in our charts (where it would stay for nine whole weeks; and returned again to the top after Freddie's death in '91 for a further five weeks). We all know it practically off by heart - so get yer operatic tonsils ready!

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.

Mama, ooh,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine,
Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.

Mama, ooh (Any way the wind blows),
I don't want to die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning very, very frightening me.
(Galileo) Galileo.
(Galileo) Galileo,
Galileo Figaro
Magnifico-o-o-o-o.

I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Never let you go (Never, never, never, never let me go)
Oh oh oh oh
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh, mama mia, mama mia (Mama mia, let me go.)
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

(Ooooh, ooh yeah, ooh yeah)

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Any way the wind blows...

Love it.

I lived for art, I lived for love, I never did harm to a living soul

Just woke up from a long lie-in to the sad news that one of our favourite operatic voices, the lovely Montserrat Caballé is dead.

Needless to say, we adored her, and indeed "La Superba" was an "exhibit" in the Dolores Delargo Towers Museum of Camp back in 2014. It is a pity that the media can only bring itself to mention her as being famous for her (brilliant, admittedly) duet with the late, great Freddie Mercury, but such is the state of today's "culture", I suppose:

There is so much more in Señorita Caballé's immense back catalogue to explore. In my tribute to the lady earlier this year on the occasion of her 85th birthday, I featured her masterful performances of works by Donizetti, Verdi and Bizet. Here she is with probably the most beautiful performance ever of this famous aria from Puccini's Tosca:

Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore,
non feci mai male ad anima viva!
Con man furtiva
quante miserie conobbi aiutai.

Which, in translation, serves as a fitting tribute to its singer:

I lived for art, I lived for love
I never did harm to a living soul
With a furtive hand
so many troubles I encountered I soothed

Brings tears to the eye. As does this - her surprising choice to cover an 80s "modern classic" by fellow Spaniards Mecano:

...and finally, the gran dama at her glittering peak, with this performance from Donizetti's Guillaume Tell:

It's becoming a bad year for divas (we lost María Dolores Pradera - as featured here way back in 2009(!) - in May; and, from different genres, admittedly, Morgana King in March, Liliane Montevecchi in June, Cats choreographer Dame Gillian Lynne in July, and (of course) Aretha Franklin in August), but for me, the passing of Montserrat Caballé is the saddest loss of all...

From The Official Charts Company's website:

60 years ago this month saw the birth of the Official Albums Chart – the UK’s official weekly snapshot of popularity dedicated to one of the most influential art forms of our time.

"The most popular album? Well, I always thought the band showed promise, but this is beyond our boyhood dreams! Thanks folks!" - Brian May

To celebrate this momentous achievement, here is Brian (and Freddie and Roger and John)'s band Queen, and their most momentous achievement [quite possibly one of the most momentous achievements in popular music ever] - Bohemian Rhapsody...

"Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?"

Indeed.

Won't let you go

It has ostensibly been a short week thanks to the Bank Holiday, but today has felt like a long time coming...

Birthday celebrants today include Teddy Johnson, Mrs Knowles-Carter (Beyoncé), DJ Mark Ronson, Anton Bruckner, Mary Renault (author of The Charioteer) and our Patron Saint of Bugle Beads Miss Mitzi Gaynor.

However, it is tomorrow's birthday boy the fantabulosa Freddie Mercury to whom we turn to get the party started this weekend - with one of his fabled solo ventures into the music of the discotheque [and with snippets of Metropolis for the celebration of which this song was written by Mr Moroder] - take it away, Freddie!

It's just a living pastime, ruining your heartline
Stays for a lifetime, won't let you go
Coz love (love) love (love) love won't leave you alone

Apparently.

Have a great weekend, peeps - Thank Disco It's Friday!

But life still goes on

Timeslip moment again, folks - as we hop into our Tardis for another trip back to the heady days of 1984.

Thirty years ago this week, Freddie and the boys caused a sensation when they threw on the drag and camped it up hilariously in the video for their massive hit I Want To Break Free. And it remains a classic to this day...

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free.

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time

And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love.

It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free, baby
Oh how I want to be free,
Oh how I want to break free.

But life still goes on
I can't get used to, living without, living without,
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free.

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free.

Time flies, etc., etc.

RIP, Freddie.

Enter the Queen(s)

On this day of pageant, as Her Majesty heads a flotilla of hundreds of boats down the Thames in honour of the Diamond Jubilee (which I shall be watching from the dry comfort of Dolores Delargo Towers rather than brave the torrential rain and millions of wet onlookers), here are a couple of appropriate pieces, methinks...

Enter the Queens: Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Jones, Freddie Mercury and more

And on a more subtle note (although it probably wasn't at the time!):

Gawd Bless Ya, Ma'am(s)!

It's been twenty years to the day since we lost Freddie...

RIP, sweetie.
