Pants!

As the most successful Italian couturier in history Signor Giorgio Armani has today departed for the glittering catwalks of Fabulon, here's a reprise of a post I did in tribute to the great man on his 90th last year:

As famous for underpants, watches and accessories as for his sharp suits, his was the style of choice for generations of stars of music, sport and the silver screen, politicians, dignitaries and even the Milanese police force.

Facts about Signor Armani:

  • He was born in the northern Italian town of Piacenza, of Armenian and Italian descent.
  • After military service as a young man, he became a window dresser at La Rinascente department store in Milan.
  • Having worked on a freelance basis for myriad designers including Zegna, Cerruti and Loewe, the first pieces he designed under his own name were a series of leather bomber jackets in 1970.
  • While building his fashion empire, he also designed costumes for more than one hundred films including American Gigolo and The Untouchables.
  • When in 1975 he brought out a womenswear line using men's fabrics, he set the wheels in motion for the "power dressing" look that became synonymous with the 80s.
  • Among his many commissions, he designed the costume worn by Spanish bullfighter Cayetano Rivera Ordóñez, the suits for the England football team (twice), and the cover of a book of gospels for the Pope.
  • By the time of his death, his fortune was estimated at six billion pounds!

So world-famous was Giorgio Armani, he was name-checked in loads of songs, from rap to pop to musical theatre. Not least this one:

Ah, ah, Armani, indeed.

Of couture, sort-of-tapestry, leaks, Superwoke and rude vegetables

RIP, Norman Tebbitt - nicknamed "The Chingford Polecat", he was for several years Maggie Thatcher's "right-hand man" and her staunchest ally.

It's another snippets post today, dear reader:

...and we know a song about that, don't we, children?

Oh, she sits among the cabbages and peas
And she talks to all the little bugs and bees.
They climb up her legs and arms
And all round her other charms.
They see lots of things nobody ever sees.

And the weather? It has been very changeable over the past few days, but apparently another "heatwave" is on its way in time for the weekend. Bring it on!

Cutting-edge glamour

There's been so little "hoo-hah" about the season's traditional Fashion Weeks that one would hardly be aware they were being held at all (even, as is the case, online-only). I completely missed last week's London one; this week it is the turn of Paris, it seems...

I suppose most people are thinking "When exactly am I going to get the opportunity to actually go out wearing posh new clothes?" at the moment.

In an effort to remind us of the glamour, the fuss, the luxury and the downright ridiculousness of it all, I think we are well overdue a little wallow in the lives of impossibly glamorous people in unattainable locations once more, courtesy of the simply fantabulosa Soft Tempo Lounge!

Oh, that's better...

Passion and love and sex and money, violence, religion, injustice and death

Had his life not been cut so tragically short, the magnificently creative fashionista Gianni Versace would have been 70 years old today.

With the weekend looming, there is really only one dancy choon that is appropriate to play on this milestone day. To get our traditional party started, here's Pet Shop Boys and the song that was famously used as the theme for the BBC's Clothes Show - Paninaro:

Passion and love and sex and money
Violence, religion, injustice and death

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

Girls, boys, art, pleasure
Girls, boys, art, pleasure

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

Food, cars, travel
Food, cars, travel, travel
New York, New York, New York
New York

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

Armani, Armani, ah-ah-Armani
Versace, cinque

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

Armani, Armani, ah-ah-Armani
Versace, cinque

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

I don't like country-and-western
I don't like rock music
I don't like, I don't like rockabilly or rock 'n' roll particularly
Don't like much really, do I?
But what I do like I love passionately

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

You, you're my lover, you're my hope, you're my dreams
my life, my passion, my love, my sex, my money
violence, religion, injustice and death

Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
Don't like much really, do I?
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh
But what I do like I love passionately
Paninaro, Paninaro, oh, oh, oh

I love it passionately.

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a great weekend, peeps...

Enfant terrible!

How the mighty have fallen. The enfant terrible of the fashion world John Galliano was arrested in Paris yesterday after a drunken brawl, and has apparently been suspended by Dior on the eve of Mode a Paris (Paris Fashion Week).

Oh those couture queens! Over at the Dolores Delargo Towers Museum of Camp, we have mounted a mini-exhibition of extravagances from London Fashion Week [including Julien MacDonald, Meadham Kirchoff, and Mr Galliano's own], which may serve to illustrate just why they all get so stressed at this time of year.

If you had to dress people in stuff like that for hours on end, wouldn't you get drunk? [No excuse for anti-semitism, however.]

Fashionista fabulosity!

As the Autumn/Winter Fashion season madness is upon us (last week London, this week Paris), what could be better for me to post than this work of wonder?

The fashion pack

As the Couture Season launches itself upon Paris this week, showcasing the looks no-one would really dare to wear this Spring and Summer, it is worth noting that two of the greatest couturiers of all time were both born on 21st January (yesterday), a mere ten years apart.

For it is 115 years since the birth of Cristobal Balenciaga, the Spanish couturier celebrated for his "classic design elegance and dramatic simplicity".

It is also 105 years ago that Christian Dior, the most influential of all fashion designers of the mid 20th century and creator of the revolutionary "New Look", was born.

There is only one way to celebrate this fashionable coincidence surely?

Happy Friday! Enjoy...

Haute Couture can be fun!

For our delectation today, I thought I would share this latest obsession of mine - a brand new collaboration between that most wonderful of French DJs Mr Martin Solveig and those Canadian weirdos Dragonette (whose Take It Like A Man last year was a similar obsession)...

The video was shot in the Paris boutique of the legendary Jean-Paul Gaultier. It's the campest thing under the sun - I love it!

Elegance has nothing to do with fashion

Apparently celebrating his 70th birthday this week (he refuses to admit his age), that eccentric legend Karl Lagerfeld is indeed a waspish soul.

Here are a few of his more memorable quotes:
  • "I am basically the most superficial person in the world."
  • "Gratitude is a sticky feeling."
  • "Coming out after a show is good discipline for me because I have to watch out that I don't look like an old garden gnome next to all these 20-year-old models."
  • "Elegance has nothing to do with fashion."
  • "I'm sorry. What I say is only applicable as I am saying it."
  • "I hate the word 'cheap'. People are cheap. Clothing is either expensive or inexpensive."
  • "I really love animals, particularly when they are stuffed with cotton or polyester. That way you can guarantee that they won't bite, won't claw, won't smell bad and make your things dirty"
  • "I am made of total egoism."
  • "Sunglasses are like eyeshadow. They make everything look younger and prettier."
  • "I avoid thinking. I want to have an easy life without problems."
  • "You cannot take yourself too seriously."
Earlier this year, the DVD of his life Lagerfeld Confidential was released in the UK. I haven't seen it yet, but I am certain that even a carefully crafted documentary couldn't get to the real measure of this complicated and fascinating man...

A true dandy, and we salute him!

The Godfather of haute couture

"I’m rather pro-prostitution. It avoids frustration, and I admire people who do it. We can’t all afford a mistress or an expensive friend. People need relief, or they become murderers. Is that a moral position?"

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is a wonderfully camp old-school eccentric, with his trademark expensive shades and chalk-white ponytail. He is not just a renowned haute couturier in his own right, he is also credited with saving the House of Chanel from imminent bankruptcy - and the revealing documentary film about his life, Lagerfeld Confidential, has now been released on DVD in the UK.

Described as "an intimate and rounded portrait of a man prone to bouts of quiet introspection and sadness, yet who exudes a disarming sense of humour; a man whose adulation for the arts is manifest in everything he touches", the film gets right to the heart of what makes this extraordinary man really tick.

Evidently, Lagerfeld considers sexual preference to be no more complicated than hair colour or fashion sense. He expresses the wish that gay people would return to their old proclivity for outraging bourgeois social norms, rather than aping what he feels are outmoded institutions like marriage. And who could honestly argue with that?

Lacroix, sweetie...

A really jaw-dropping televisual feast tonight - BBC4's documentary The Secret World of Haute Couture...

Probably screened to coincide with the opening of the V&A exhibition The Golden Age of Couture, which opened on Saturday, and the London Fashion Week, this insight into the world of those face-lifted sunglasses-wearing ladies who form the "inner circle" of the high fashion world is amazing.

Ateliers, Baronesses, rare feathers, Parisienne salons, sequins, Mitfords, dodgy hairpieces, Wallis Simpson, former air hostesses who married rather well, a plethora of old queens - this programme has it all!

Catch it on replay if you can! It's worth it.
