The undisputed Queen of Fuckin' Everything

Our Patron Saint Queen Madge has crossed that milestone so dreaded by many an artist famed for their looks and image - for the former Miss Ciccone blows out sixty candles on her cake today!

The lady herself, however, doesn't really seem to give a shit. She is, and remains, the most successful female music artist in history, and she certainly has never bowed to the opinions of others. [A true Leo!]

Indeed, many pretenders to her throne have come and gone in the four decades since that effervescent, be-ribboned, diminutive figure first leapt onto our screens (in an episode of The Tube with Jools Holland and the late Paula Yates) in January 1984...

...Our Glorious Leader did it first, did it better, and will continue to rule all that she surveys!

Many happy returns, Madonna Louise Ciccone (born 16th August 1958)!

Happy 70th Birthday Liza!

It's good to have him back!

Now here's the real thing...

We're back...

...but what did we miss while we were away? Another bus strike, some cold weather, the closure of yet another gay bar in Soho, Britain becoming ever classier with the news that Poundland is trying to take over its rival 99p Store chain, Putin and ISIS being bastards (no surprises there), and a slight setback for the Qatari royal family's plans to take over the whole of London...

We missed what would have been Elaine Stritch's 90th birthday, Natalie Cole and Morgan Fairchild's 65th birthdays, the 93rd birthdays of both Patrick McNee and Denis Norden, Zsa Zsa Gabor's 98th, and also that eternal survivor Carol Channing's 94th!

On a more sad note, we bade a fond farewell to the film noir stalwart Lizabeth Scott (read my blog about her on the occasion of her 90th birthday), and, in even more sad news, the fantabulosa Geraldine McEwan - the original television Emmeline "Lucia" Lucas in Mapp and Lucia - has died. "Au reservoir", indeed.

There was some good news for the West End - despite an excellent yet sad article by John Harris in The Guardian mourning the continued gentrification of the centre of our fine city - as it was announced (as had been rumoured for some time) that the Cyndi Lauper/Harvey Fierstein musical Kinky Boots is coming to London this summer. A rather fab addition to the "Season" calendar, methinks - a season of events that begins immediately, as February is LGBT History Month!

Oh! And Madonna's new single Living for Love is out. Here's a tribute from Charlie Hides TV. Of course.

It's strange being back. There's no beach...

Who's that girl?

Dedicated to Miss Renée "Bridget Jones" Zellweger, who seems lately to have a completely new head...

Charlie Hides TV.

Of course.

{2022 UPDATE: Like so much of Mr Hides' material - gone from the interwebs]

Miss Zellweger is not the only one whose face appears to be completely different to how we remember it.

Take Nicole Kidman, for example:

Or Jennifer "Dirty Dancing" Grey:

How about Meg Ryan?

Or Priscilla Presley?

And let's not even mention Jennifer Rush...

Drag queens were invented by the Soviet Union

In the news today:
F***book has apologised to transgender and drag queen users whose accounts were deleted for violating its policy on using "real names".

The company now calls for people to "use the authentic name they use in real life" on their profiles.

Several hundred accounts were flagged by a single user for contravening company policy last month.

Chief product officer Chris Cox acknowledged that the experience had been "painful" for those involved.

"I want to apologise to the affected community of drag queens, drag kings, transgender, and extensive community of our friends, neighbours, and members of the LGBT community for the hardship that we've put you through in dealing with your Facebook accounts over the past few weeks," he said.

Mark Snyder, a spokesman for the Transgender Law Centre, told the AFP news agency that a planned street protest on Thursday in San Francisco would now become a celebration.
Leave it to the wonderful Charlie Hides to lead the celebrations - or does she?

Where the action is

Time once more, my pretties, for some of the newer music I have taken a shine to lately!

I am thoroughly sick and tired of waiting for the new Cher video to accompany her much-leaked single (from her first new studio album in a decade) Woman's World, so here is the fabulous Charlie Hides instead:

And here is the single itself (audio only). It's rather reminiscent of Strong Enough, but that's no bad thing...

[2019 UPDATE: audio version no longer online]

To compensate for the distinct lack of Cher-herself-ness, how about a little twisted gay burlesque? Thought so. Here's this year's Steve Strange/Jobriath wannabee, the performance artist known as Garek - Save The Queen, indeed!

I know I have featured Parralox - and this song - before, but I could not resist re-posting when I saw their brand new video for Sharper Than A Knife. It's rather fab:

Thanks again to the lovely Henry over at Barbarella's Galaxy, I have discovered the brilliant new release from that rather electro-tastic Danish combo Electric Lady Lab (here with Kato). With an excellent video to boot, they're Alive:

Another welcome return for the ever-fabulosa Young Professionals, who have become a firm fixture in my musical tastes over the last couple of years. With its customary (but unfortunately this time very brief) cameo from our fave gender-bender Uriel Yekutiel, the video features a fashion parade of the "fire on ice" collection by French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. It's their new single, Be With You Tonight:

Saving the kitschiest for last - a discovery that has filled me with great joy, especially as we have a long-awaited week in Benalmadena to look forward to in the New Year! Here is another of those pound euro-shop-divas that Spain seems to specialise in, a sort of cross between Amanda Lepore and Dana International, it's the enigma that is Yurena with her new single Go:

As ever, enjoy - and let me know what you think...
