Let it shine on you

Now you see it...

...and now you don't (much)!

Yes, that horrid American Black Walnut tree over the back from the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers is finally meeting its maker. Good! Just the vile sycamores (in the left of each picture) to go.

Here's an appropriate song - and what a video!

I'm steppin' out, my dear, to breathe an atmosphere that simply reeks with class

That's one way to wake oneself up on a Monday morning...

Bleurrrgh. Another busy yet rewarding weekend is over, and here we are again [even earlier than usual as I am interviewing this morning; gawd bless Inhuman Resources for arranging that on a Monday].

Let's jolt ourselves out of the slough of despond on this Tacky Music Monday, shall we - courtesy of our ever-reliable Patron Saint Cher (and her faboo friends)?!

Have a good one, dear reader. I won't.

W.O.M.A.N. - say it again!

"I am here for visual effects, and I have two of them."

"My body is the shape I live in and it shapes the way I live."

"For a woman to be considered a celebrated beauty is not exactly a bad thing. I think we have to say that in all reality."

"You know what's the sexiest thing of all? A little mystery."

Scary. Another well-loved icon turns 80 years old today: Miss Raquel Welch, crowned "sex symbol" of the 1970s, chat show favourite, actress, singer, model, fitness guru, "Celebrity Royalty" - and purveyor of her own brand of wigs (indeed)...

Never one to take herself entirely seriously, here are just a few of her campest moments...

Many happy returns, Raquel Welch (born Jo Raquel Tejada, 5th September 1940)

The whole sex-symbol thing is part of what I do

"In school, nobody could pronounce my name. They just called me Rocky."

"The whole sex-symbol thing is part of what I do as an actress. It's a kind of character I play. It's part of me, but not the whole me."

"The most erogenous zone is the brain. It's all happening there. Otherwise, it's just body parts."

"I was a bigger-than-life persona before I was anyone in my own mind."

It is the 75th birthday today of a woman whose figure became world-famous long before her acting career (such as it is) was ever noted - Miss Raquel Welch.

Although most of her films could never be classed as "high art" she is, nevertheless, a true survivor - more than 50 years in the business and still working, which is more than can be said of many a "sex kitten" of her generation. And, thankfully, she has not had the kind of plastic surgery that makes so many former beauties look like burns victims...

Here she is in her full sassy heyday, giving that male "sex symbol" Mr Tom Jones a run for his money in this medley of Rip It Up, Slippin n' Slidin', Lucille, Tutti Frutti, Jenny Jenny and Long Tall Sally:

Whew!

Many happy returns, Raquel Welch (born Jo Raquel Tejada, 5th September 1940)

Solar flares

The news today that a solar storm may be heading the way of Earth, with all the usual apocalyptic predictions from the "experts" about disruption to power grids, satellite navigation and plane routes, just makes me want to play this.

Miss Raquel Welch and her acolytes welcome this news...

Where's the sunshine, indeed?

Beyond the cleavage

As rumours abound that Raquel Welch's fabulously camp TV special Raquel! from the early 70s is to be reissued in a re-mastered version, it would seem churlish on this Tacky Music Monday not to feature a clip of the wonderful lady herself doing... well... what she did best, really!

Anyone who can publish an autobiography called Beyond the Cleavage just has to be fab!

Have a good week...

Say it again!

It's Monday again - where do those pesky weekends go? Let us take our minds off things with another in a long line of Tacky Music Monday spectaculars!

A couple of weeks ago I blogged about the fact that Raquel Welch is (remarkably) seventy years old! Here she is, giving Cher a run for her money in the glittering diaphanous costume stakes!

Enjoy!

If you have physical attractiveness you don't have to act

Many happy returns to that screen bombshell Miss Raquel Welch, seventy years young today, and still looking fabulous!

Even now still most famous for swanning around a polystyrene set in an animal-skin bikini in the godawful One Million Years BC, the young Jo Racquel Tejada was "discovered" while working as a cocktail waitress.

With her good looks and perfect figure she was inevitably going to be typecast as a sex symbol in the Swinging 60s, and true to form she spent most of her time in Fantastic Voyage in a skin-tight diving suit, rarely changed out of her bikini in A Swinging Summer, and was given the part of the deadly sin "Lust" in Peter Cook & Dudley Moore's Bedazzled.

By far her weirdest role was as a transsexual in the cult film Myra Breckenridge (based on the scandalous Gore Vidal novel), opposite a sex siren of a much earlier age Mae West! Despite her wonderfully rip-roaring part in The Three Musketeers, Miss Welch's career in movies never really went very far (she never got many serious leading roles, certainly), and thus the glittering world of TV beckoned. She hosted her own variety show throughout the 70s with Tom Jones, and has made numerous guest appearances in TV shows ever since - my favourite being her incredibly camp "Aunt Vesta" in Sabrina the Teenage Witch...

Ignoring her ill-fated attempt at a pop "career" in the 80s, here is Raquel Welch doing what she does best - playing the vamp (and singing!):

She is simply faboo.
