Lo que pidas muy barato lo doy*

Grrrr... Back to the office. Back to reality.

After a very pleasant weekend - Saturday doing fuck all, and yesterday spent absorbing the joyful musings of an erudite panel on the meaning and influence of divas on the lives of generations of gay men (and lesbians and others in the "alphabet soup" of labels these days) at the Southbank Centre - it's time for a wake-up call!

Who better to provide it on a Tacky Music Monday than one of those very divas - Spain's finest, one of our cherished Patron Saints, "La Leyenda" Señorita Sara Montiel (and her safety gays)?!

Fab-u-lous!

Have a good week, dear reader...

[* "Lo que pidas muy barato lo doy" = "I sell it really cheap" in Spanish; a lyric from the song]

¡No quiero verte, vete!

Nooooooooo!

Another lovely break is over and, for the first time in seventeen days, I have to open that bloody laptop and re-enter the ever-delightful world of work.

To add insult to injury, the nasty cold, dank greyness that has held sway the whole time since we returned from holiday is due to break midweek, and we'll have proper warm weather for this time of year, maybe even a heatwave - while I am in the office!

Sigh.

Never mind eh? It is a Tacky Music Monday, and, with memories of Spain fading from our minds almost as quickly as our tans - ¡Dios mío! - have I found a corker from that country, for your delectation, dear reader... Enjoy!

Have a good week. I won't!!

Did you miss me?

Yes, we're back in miserable, dank Blighty, after a wonderful week in the blazing sunshine of Benalmadena. Great friends, great food, booze, totty-spotting, banter, booze, lots of laughs, nights out in the sleazy environs of La Nogilera in Torremolinos and booze - business as usual, really!

Our journey out was knackering: only a meagre amount of sleep, and a taxi at 2.30am to catch a flight from Gatwick at the crack'o'doom - so much so that we didn't even go out on Saturday night - and our journey home from Luton airport was marred by the fact that there were no trains to London, so we ended up on a coach transfer to some god-forsaken hole (Hitchin) to get a connection. At least that train got us straight to Finsbury Park (nearer home than Kings Cross) - but there was no Piccadilly Line either, so we had to get a cab... None of that matters, of course, when the bit in the middle was such a joy!

But - what did we miss while we were on our week of hedonism? Well, there was a massive furore over that plague ship that needed to be evacuated after several passengers died of a Medieval disease; and it was a local elections wipeout for Labour, which has put PM Kier Starmer at risk of being ousted. Then there was the glittering Met Gala (now sponsored by the Google gnomes billionaire Amazon arseholes Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez), the important scientific discovery that beer is good for you as it contains vitamins, the departure of Ted Turner for that great 24-hour-television-channel-in-the-sky - and the man who pulled a car using his penis, while on fire [I'm not making this up, you know]!

We also missed celebrating the 90th birthday of Engelbert Humperdinck, the 85th of Earth, Wind and Fire co-founder Philip Bailey, the 80ths of Sir David Suchet and Thelma Houston (and what would have been the 80th of Lesley Gore), the - gulp - 65ths of Jay Aston from Bucks Fizz and George Clooney...

...and Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday!

But did we bring anything back for your delectation, dear reader?

This being a Tacky Music Monday, it could only be Spain's answer to Dame Shirl, the late, great Señorita Rocío Jurado, at her big-haired, OTT best!

Is it good to be back?

NO!

El ritmo de la noche, sounds of fiesta

By the time you read this, dear reader - if ever you do, given yesterday's debacle - we should (hopefully) be just about landing in Malaga for another week of hedonism...

Here's a little variation on our usual theme of Vamos a la Playa to keep you entertained:

"Normal" service will be resumed, with any luck, in a week's time...

You and me can dance so free

Our Scilla peruviana ("Portuguese Squill") is stunning. [click to embiggen]

"Hooray, hooray, the first of May! Outdoor sex begins today."

In the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers, the daffs, tulips and primulas - as well as the cherry and apple blossoms in the neighbourhood - are over. The air is now scented with the intoxicating perfume of lilacs, jasmine, rowan and the last of the wallflowers. How does one adequately encapsulate the scents of Spring? The combination is simply divine.

To add to the uplifting mood, I'm counting down to the end of a particularly gruelling week - and tomorrow we're up in the deathly hours in order to get a taxi to Gatwick Airport, to catch our flight to Spain for a week's much-needed holiday! I have never needed a holiday this much [since the last one, of course 😎]!

Let's have something suitably Spanish to get the celebrations going, shall we - and who could be more appropriate than our Patron Saint of Plastic, Charo?!

¡Gracias Disco Es viernes!

Have a great weekend, dear reader! We intend to.

STOP PRESS:

I don't know when - or even if - you will actually see this, dear reader, but I timed it to publish at 7.30am...and it is now 6.30pm and it still hasn't shown up! I hate the Google gnomes.

Can even feathers, fouff and faff save us now?

Aaaaaarggghhh!

After a rather lovely sixteen days away - it's time to face the shit all over again, and I am really not in the mood for all this. People had better keep their heads down - "Mama's diet pill is wearing off..."

Meanwhile...

...it is a Tacky Music Monday, regardless - and we need something spectacular to serve as a wake-up call!

With memories of Spain slowly fading into the ether, here's one of that country's finest, the very lovely, late, great Rocio Durcal with a whole scream [I assume that is the correct collective noun] of safety gays (and what could well be her mother and her auntie, to boot), and a number that really fits the bill perfectly:

Have a good week, dear reader. I won't.

Oh, how hot..? *

Slow, slow, slow - that just about sums up how today is going, since our return from Spain late on Saturday. Despite having mental plans of things to do in the garden (while the rain holds off) and/or the flat (I have had some more pictures framed, so there's some rearranging to do to accommodate them before we run out of wall!), all I've really managed is to get some washing done.

Hey ho. I haven't forgotten, however, despite still being on holiday all this week, that it is a Tacky Music Monday - and with that in mind...

...why have just one Spanish diva to cheer us up, when you can have three?!

¡Olé!

Have a good week, dear reader.

El regreso...

Leonardo and Martha. A nice couple we met on our holiday? "Nice" would be pushing it... Two of the fiercest "named storms" of the season; unfortunately they both visited Andalusia in the same week while we were there.

We arrived on a pleasant, breezy, quite sunny weekend and enjoyed sitting in the sunshine - but after that it went all grey and blustery and showery with sunny intervals, and by Tuesday we had proper rain (and bought a brolly). One morning we had sleet hitting our balcony! Friday (The Madam's birthday) was particularly schizophrenic - on my way down to our regular beach bar Palm 5, the rainstorm was horizontal and I could hardly keep the brolly up, yet by 2pm we had nary a cloud in the sky, and basked in the sunshine until the sun went down! To finish things off "nicely", as we waited for our evening flight yesterday we were huddled at the back of the bar terrace, freezing, and watching the Palm 5 staff fighting to get one of the windbreak roller blinds back into place as Martha had blown its hooks out of their mounts.

We were concerned about our flight taking off in such a "hurricane", but all went well (we even landed in Luton Airport twenty minutes early). Bizarrely, by the time we were having our first British pint at the Wetherspoons at Kings Cross St Pancras, we were warmer sat at their outside tables at 11pm than we had been at lunchtime on the Costa del "Sol"...

We still had a fabulous holiday, regardless! We felt really welcomed wherever we went, had loads of laughs, ate some great food, caught a bit of sunshine on our skin - and burned the candle at both ends with post-siesta nights in the La Nogilera gay area in Torremolinos (as is our wont). [And we're booked to go again at the beginning of May, so there's that to look forward to...]

But what did we miss while we were away? Not a lot, truth be told. The Winter (yawn) Olympics are on in Italy, apparently; sacked former ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson is a bogeyman again, and Prime Minister Starmer's under pressure again; no amount of false posturing from the orange moron in the White House has prevented that evil cunt Putin from bombing Ukraine; among the amazing treasures uncovered during ongoing works on the HS2 rail route are a Neanderthal hand axe, a set of 19th Century gold dentures, a Roman gladiator "good luck" tag, and a gold "three lions" pendant from the 13th-14th Century; and finally - a man had to be rescued from a tree on the Isle of Wight, where he was sheltering from being attacked by an angry cow.

[click any pic to embiggen]

Oh - and tennis totty Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player to win a Grand Slam. New balls, please...

No doubt what you're asking, dear reader is - did we bring anything back with us to share? Of course. A triple-bill, no less!

Spain's Eurovision entrant in 2024, doing what she does...

...a proper Spanish number (ish)...

...and finally, my fave!

Is it good to be home? ¡Ni hablar!

We're off...

By the time you read this, we'll hopefully be in the skies on our way to our annual winter break to Benalmadena!

There is a traditional song I always play on such an auspicious occasion, and so - here it is:

It's traditional.

"Normal" service will resume sometime next weekend, dear reader...

Friday, 30 January 2026

I would rather be just a little shady

¡Olé! indeed. Just one more day of tedious slog to go, and it'll be time to slam that laptop shut for the next seventeen days!

As you are no doubt aware, dear reader - we're off to Spain for a week tomorrow (followed by - for me, at least - another week off to mong about, pottering in the garden, no doubt).

To mark the very welcome end of the week, how about a little bit of Spanish campery..?

Gracias Disco ¡Es viernes!

Have a great one, dear reader!

Just too good to be true?

Benalmadena has changed a bit since the 1970s

With only a couple of days left before we bugger off in pursuit of some sunshine, one might have expected to be able to wind-down a bit - but no, the tasks have just been ramping up instead. Bastards!

I don't care. One-and-a-bit days... then at 4pm tomorrow, sod 'em all!

Meanwhile, here's one of our fave Spanish combos, without whom no countdown to a (hopefully) stress-free holiday on the Costa would really be complete...

Ah, that's better.

Monday, 26 January 2026

¡Empieza la cuenta atrás para nuestras vacaciones!

Just a few more days...

Yep. Monday again. Work again. It's still miserable, grey and dank out there, with more rain on the horizon (particularly tomorrow).

However, the countdown has begun - just five days to go, and we're off to Spain on Saturday! Can't wait...

Meanwhile, on this Tacky Music Monday, here's an old fave - our Patron Saint of Histrionics Señorita Rocío Jurado!

As I said last time I posted it:

With a plethora of safety gays and girls who look like drag queens [I'm sure I spotted a youthful Dame Hilda Bracket in there somewhere], bizarre costume changes, piss-poor miming and a duettist who looks like Ron Burgundy sans moustache - this is just perfect!

It remains so:

Have a good week, dear reader.

Eviva España

Yep. Monday's here...

Here we go again...

At least, as we head out for another week of unbridled joy in the world of work, we have something to look forward to - we've booked our holiday in Spain next February!

Hoorah!

To ramp up the anticipation on this Tacky Music Monday, here's an old fave - a most bizarre video [reminiscent of that Björk one (or more likely Miss Dawn French's hilarious piss-take)] in which the faboo Spanish diva Señorita Marujita Díaz appears to be floating above the traffic while warbling a song to her home city of Madrid:

Love it!

Have a good week, dear reader.

¡El retorno!

Yes, we are back from another marvellous, fun-packed week in the (slightly breezy) sunshine of the lovely resort of Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol - tanned and gorgeous as ever!

We made the trip especially to join the celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of our favourite and most regular beach bar, Palm 5, a tribute to its owner Arnold, and to the loveliest crew of staff you'll find anywhere - Rita, Kim, Danny, Sophie and the rest. There was a party on the Saturday evening we arrived and, despite being somewhat shell-shocked (as we were after two consecutive nights out at the theatre and a long day travelling), we had a whale of a time, especially as some familiar faces had also made the effort to be there, including former team members Manon (who now has her own bar Miluca along the paseo, which we also always visit), the lovely Andy (who was there with Arnold right at the outset when we first visited nineteen years ago), and the fantabulosa Cinzia [with us in the top photo] (who, by the end of her stay, had agreed to return to Palm 5 as manager!).

With all that, and great food, booze, visits to our night-time haunts in La Nogilera in Torremolinos Chessa Bar and Vida, booze, more great food, wallowing in the sun-terrace of another favourite bar The Dizzy Donkey, a Flamenco evening, and booze on top, we had a great holiday!

But what did we miss while we were away?

  • New mitre, old dictatorship news: There's a new Pope, apparently.
  • 'Tis the season news: The BBC Proms 2025 lineup was announced just before we left, and tickets go on sale this week. I haven't looked at it thoroughly, to be honest, but somehow I doubt we'll be buying tickets - especially since our fave event Proms in the Park is now defunct. Here's the trailer, for your delectation:

Speaking of which: we missed celebrating the 50th birthday of sex god David Beckham...

...and that of Enrique Iglesias, as well as the 70ths of Donatella Versace and Anne-Sofie von Otter, the 60ths of Rob Brydon and Linda Evangelista and Lily Allen's 40th - and the 99th birthday of the "national treasure" Sir David Attenborough! We also missed the chance to bid a fond farewell to the faboo Ruth Buzzi, of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In fame...

Whew.

To finish, here's a piece of music that was played at the Palm 5 party - we love it!

Is it good to be back?

NO!!!

FOOTNOTE:

I haven't forgotten that it's a Tacky Music Monday - nor the fact that it's the Eurovision Song Contest (and our accompanying party, of course) this weekend.

Blending the two perfectly - this!

Subwoolfer - Give That Wolf A Banana

Oh, I cannot wait to see if anyone this year can top that!

Vamos!

We do like to blend in with the locals.

By the time you see this, dear reader, we should be in the sky heading for another hedonistic week in the sunshine of Andalusia!

There's only one thing to play now:

"Normal" service will resume sometime after our return next weekend...

Friday, 2 May 2025

Postcards from Amsterdam? Phone calls from Birmingham?

Almost there...

Just one working day and a Sondheim show to go [and you'll have to wait till I'm back in Blighty for any kind of post about that one], and we'll be off to the delights of the Costa del Sol again tomorrow!

Speaking of the joys of of the Costas...this!

Gracias Disco ¡Ya es viernes!

Have a good weekend, dear reader!

From a strange world*, indeed

The countdown to Spain is speeding up - just two more days to go and we'll be there! Ironically, it's warmer here in London today than it is in Malaga...

[Meanwhile, we have not one, but two theatre trips to enjoy - tonight is a tribute evening at Wilton's Music Hall to the late, great operatic contralto Kathleen Ferrier - read more about her over at the Dolores Delargo Museum of Camp - and tomorrow it's the UK premiere of Stephen Sondheim's last musical Here We Are. We'll be knackered by the time we arrive on the Costa..!]

I think something suitably Spanish is in order - and it doesn't get much more camp than house fave María Jiménez!

I dress just like that whenever I go shopping.

[* De un mundo raro = "From a strange world" in English]

[More Señorita Jiménez]

Waiters?* In those outfits?

Back to the grind again...

Never mind, eh? As long as we have our Patron Saint of "if a thing's worth doing, it's worth over-doing" Señorita Sara Montiel - whose birthday it would have been today - and her "homosexuales seguridad" on a Tacky Music Monday, all's well with the world...

Have a good week, dear reader.

Sorry I'm a lady

RIP, Gene Hackman

The sun is rising in a clear blue sky, the weekend is looming, and - after another tedious week in work - we need to start planning the party to celebrate!

As any sign of sunshine always brings thoughts of holidays in Spain, how about an old, old fave [it was in our charts - gulp - 47 YEARS AGO this week!] from one of that country's greatest exports?

Gracias Disco ¡Es viernes!

Have a great one, dear reader!

Monday, 17 February 2025

Fruity, indeed

Aaaaaarrrggghhh!

Back to reality. Gawd knows what utter joys are lined up to face me as I stagger my weary way back to work...

...Never mind, eh? Here - in another nod to our beloved Spain, before our tans completely fade and wash off - is a phenomenon, to serve as a real wake-up call on this Tacky Music Monday.

Laydeez'n'gentlemen, may I introduce one of that country's - ahem - finest trans entertainers, Miss Bibi Anderson!

Good heavens.

Have a good week, dear reader. I won't.
