Wednesday on Saturday

Finally - I caught up with series #2 of the wonderful Wednesday, with another "geek viewing" afternoon at John-John's. Utterly superb!

Such a wealth of good actors in this show - Jenna Ortega's superb in the title role, Catherine Zeta-Jones gives even Anjelica Huston a run for her money as "Morticia", there's a surprising return for the magnificent Gwendoline Christie as "Principal Weems" (who was definitely dead in series #1), and I was particularly taken with Evie Templeton as newcomer "Agnes"...

...but [and I'm with Mistress Maddie on this one} it is Dame Joanna Lumley as granny "Hester Frump" who really steals the show in every scene in which she appears! Here's a little taster:

Oh - and among the raft of interesting music played on the soundtrack - this!

Essential viewing, methinks.

Of royalty, blooms, beaches, bees and bog roll

Another snippets post today, dear reader...

  • Floral news: The RHS Chelsea Flower Show opened its doors to the hoi-polloy today - after HM The King and Queen Camilla, the media and assorted celebs including Dame Mary Berry, Cate Blanchett, David Beckham, Vanessa Feltz, Richard E Grant, Amanda Holden, Felicity Kendal and Dame Joanna Lumley had the place to themselves yesterday.
  • Not the kind of beach holiday he expected news: A British tourist had to be rescued after digging a hole in the sand at Copacabana Beach and hitting quicksand, but was helped through it by a can of cold beer. Not the first time men have been sucked on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, I imagine.
  • Romance is not dead news: A new wedding gift registry service has been launched by Tesco that includes toilet tissue, toothpaste, refuse sacks, kitchen towel, antibacterial hand wash and shower products. Now, that would look lovely in the photos...
  • And finally - Catch that buzz: It's (coincidentally) World Bee Day today! And we know a song about that, don't we?

Hope you're humming along, dear reader!

And the weather? Up and down again like a whore's drawers.

We wuz robbed! #765 in an ongoing series...

Another fantabulosa time was had by all on Saturday, as the clans gathered from all over and descended on Dolores Delargo Towers for our Grand Eurovision party!

As usual, everyone pulled out all the stops on their costumes [everyone gets nominated a country for dressing-up/flag-waving, one for food and a third for booze]!

Of course, once the televisual feast began in earnest, all mayhem broke loose as usual - as we scored each of the twenty-five participating countries. Much shouting, jeering and cheering - especially for plucky little Olly!

There was some really weird stuff on offer - none more so than Ireland's Bambie Thug [a personal fave]!

There was also the usual profusion of gimmicky sets, unusual instruments, pyrotechnics, strobes, smoke machines, outlandish costumes and gyrating semi-naked male dancers (hurrah!). It wouldn't be Eurovision if you weren't completely boggled by it all...

Having tallied up all the booze-stained scoresheets, our gang's Top Five were as follows:

1. United Kingdom: Olly Alexander - Dizzy [...and we thought boxing was a butch sport?!]

2. Finland: Windows95man - No Rules! [or should that be "no pants"?]

3. Spain: Nebulossa - ZORRA [let's hear it for the boys!]

4. Switzerland: Nemo - The Code [how the hell did Nemo not fall off that spinning thing?]

5. Croatia: Baby Lasagna - Rim Tim Tagi Dim [possibly the "most Eurovision" song title of the lot!]

Inevitably, our choices were somewhat at odds with both the jury and the public votes...

But first - the interval acts! Our hosts Malin Åkerman and Petra Mede teased us with a performance from a Swedish super pop group “beginning with an A”... It wasn't that one, it was Alcazar!

Of course, there had to be some Abba - their "Abba-tars" from the Abba: Voyage show made a special appearance in place of the "real thing"...

...and there was a faboo Abba tribute, by previous contest-winners Carola, Charlotte Perrelli and Conchita Wurst:

All that done and dusted, it was time for the tortuous bit - first off, the votes from all 37 juries. Once these started to roll in, we began to realise that unlike in this country, Olly's song was not that popular across the rest of Europe. Or is it the inevitable political voting - "anyone but the UK"? In any case, we only got 46 votes! Forty-bloody-six.

The jury favourites were:

Switzerland - 365
France - 218
Croatia - 210
Italy - 164
Ukraine - 146

At least we had Dame Joanna Lumley to cheer us up:

To add insult to injury, then came the even more turgid business of announcing the public phone-in votes, and...

...the UK got nothing! Nil points. Nada. From any fucker in the world.

Talk about feeling rejected. The screams of outrage from our living-room could probably have reached Malmo!

In contrast, that scrawny little bitch from Switzerland ended up with a massive 591 combined points and won the Eurovision Song Contest, despite the fact that Croatia, Israel, Ukraine and France were all more popular with the public.

Deep sigh.

The party was fantabulosa! Sir Tel approved

Never mind, eh? - same time, same place next year?

Of course!!!

FOOTNOTE: Apologies for the blank pink placeholders for every video; this is because my US chums tend not to be able to view the official Eurovision Song Contest videos, so I have downloaded and upoloaded all of them direct to Blogger. See how good I am to you, dear reader?

PS:

I haven't forgotten it's a Tacky Music Monday just because I'm on holiday!

It's a Eurovision blog post.

How much more fucking tacky do you want?!

Yeah, cheers sweetie, thanks a lot

Ab Fab news!

None other than "national treasure" Dame Joanna Lumley is going to be announcing the scores from the UK jury at the Eurovision Song Contest final next week!

"It's such a fabulous honour to give the iconic 'douze points'!", she said.

Breaking the news on the BBC's The One Show yesterday, Graham Norton spoke for us all, as he wondered if she might read out the results as Patsy Stone... "Glassful of champagne, fistful of cigarettes. Yeah, do it,"

Now that would be a treat!

Uptown Downstairs

For once, a "fabulous at 50" birthday has come around that actually makes me feel OK about being this age.

Who'd have thought that the stuffy, old Lord Grantham - aka Hugh Bonneville - was only 50? Anyway, happy birthday Hugh!

As clips of Downton Abbey are likely to contain spoilers (we haven't actually watched any of the latest series; we tend to record it and save it for a marathon sitting or two, as we did with the last one), it provides me with an opportunity to showcase the marvellous Victoria Wood and Jennifer Saunders spoof for Comic Relief Red Nose Day 2011 (also featuring Joanna Lumley, Harry Enfield, Dale Winton, Olivia Colman, Kim Cattrall and Simon Callow)!

Love it!

Lacroix, sweetie

In tribute to our idol Jennifer Saunders, who celebrated her 55th birthday yesterday, here's an excellent (somewhat edited) documentary - broadcast in the run-up to the show's 20th anniversary in 2011 - on one of the best TV comedies ever made, Absolutely Fabulous. Wonderful...

Many happy returns, Jen!

"We like this one, Pats!"

Great news!
Hit comedy Absolutely Fabulous is to return to BBC One later this year with three specials to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary, the BBC has said.

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will return as Edina and Patsy along with other original cast members.

Julia Sawalha will resume the role of put-upon daughter Saffy, June Whitfield as Edina's mother and Jane Horrocks as personal assistant Bubble.

The award-winning series ran from 1992 to 2003 with a special in 2004.

It depicted the raucous, fashion addicted lives of PR guru Edina, with her constant weight battles, and her best friend, the glamorous sex-mad magazine editor Patsy.

Saunders, who is also the show's creator, said: "Like a good bottle of champagne we hope that we have got better with time without losing any of our sparkle.

"Last week when we started filming in dear old west London, it was as if nothing had changed. It was raining.

"Nevertheless, we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older like us, but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of PR."
Any excuse for some classic clips...

Sweetie, darling!

Heavens! Our very own, our favourite, the multi-talented Saint Joanna of the Lumleys is 65 years old today!

From early beginnings as a 60s "dolly-bird" (she was one of Ken Barlow's girlfriends in Corrie), to hitting the big time as the style icon Purdey in The New Avengers and appearing in the bewildering Sapphire and Steel in the 70s, to self-parody and comedy with Dr Willoughby and of course the marvellous Patsy Stone in Ab Fab, she has raised herself to the exalted heights of "national treasure".

Steadfastly reticent about having her private life appear in the spotlight, she nevertheless continues to use her public popularity to support causes dear to her heart such as the rights of the Gurkhas, and to raise awareness of the plight of oppressed people in Nepal, India, Tibet and in Burma (she was born in India under the Raj).

Rumour has it that another Ab Fab special is in the making, which may or may not be a good thing - but she will always have a place in our hearts...

Miss Lumley, we at Dolores Delargo Towers salute you!
