I would rather be just a little shady

¡Olé! indeed. Just one more day of tedious slog to go, and it'll be time to slam that laptop shut for the next seventeen days!

As you are no doubt aware, dear reader - we're off to Spain for a week tomorrow (followed by - for me, at least - another week off to mong about, pottering in the garden, no doubt).

To mark the very welcome end of the week, how about a little bit of Spanish campery..?

Gracias Disco ¡Es viernes!

Have a great one, dear reader!

Postcards from Amsterdam? Phone calls from Birmingham?

Almost there...

Just one working day and a Sondheim show to go [and you'll have to wait till I'm back in Blighty for any kind of post about that one], and we'll be off to the delights of the Costa del Sol again tomorrow!

Speaking of the joys of of the Costas...this!

Gracias Disco ¡Ya es viernes!

Have a good weekend, dear reader!

Sorry I'm a lady

RIP, Gene Hackman

The sun is rising in a clear blue sky, the weekend is looming, and - after another tedious week in work - we need to start planning the party to celebrate!

As any sign of sunshine always brings thoughts of holidays in Spain, how about an old, old fave [it was in our charts - gulp - 47 YEARS AGO this week!] from one of that country's greatest exports?

Gracias Disco ¡Es viernes!

Have a great one, dear reader!

A Musical Joke?

[click to embiggen]

For some bizarre reason or other, while mindlessly surfing the web, I happened upon a really bizarre discovery.

Weird versions of otherwise familiar songs/choons being a favourite "obsession" of ours here at Dolores Delargo Towers (our collection is full of such eccentric stuff!), I went on a bit of a mission to find more from this conductor and arranger Waldo de los Ríos, and discovered that his "jazzed-up" versions of classical music were wildly popular in the early 1970s...

...to the degree that the BBC even used one of the man's creations for one of its (now sadly defunct) flagship programmes The Horse Of The Year Show:

So popular was Buenos Aires-born Señor de los Ríos in Spain, not only did he conduct the Spanish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971, he even got his own show on Spanish telly - and, among his dancers were none other than Mayte Mateos and Maria Mendiola, who went on to become famous as... Baccara!

Utterly bonkers! I love it.

Missin' several angels

Go, girl! *

It's the final, final countdown - not merely the end of a week, but the end of a year!

Having depressed everyone yesterday by opening the "Book of the Dead 2021", it's time to (sort of) make amends - with a party. We shan't be hosting a real one again this year, more's the pity, thanks to fucking Omicron ["our gang" will be gathering via Zoom/Teams/wotever instead] - but let's get some dance choons lined up for a (solitary) boogie nonetheless!

Every track on this playlist is from someone who has departed for the ever-growing dancefloors of Fabulon this year - so let's raise a glass to the memory of each and every one of 'em, and Thank Disco It's New Year's Eve Friday!!

Have a faboo New Year, dear reader! Clink, clink. It can only be better. Can't it?

[* Scary fact: the boy in that classic "meme-y thing" is now 39 and living in Boston]

I would rather be just a little shady

Gosh, our "1970s camp Disco icons" are dropping like flies this year. We've lost both Patrick Juvet and Raffaella Carra, and now comes that sad news that Maria Mendiola [the one in white in all the photos and videos], founder-member of the world-conquering Spanish duo Baccara, has died, at just 69 years old.

We at Dolores Delargo Towers are bereft again - but on a Tacky Music Monday, for a "wake-up call" as we return to the joys of work, I never need an excuse to pay due tribute to Spain's original "tacky music Queens"!

First up, of course, is their debut hit - which has sold an estimated 18 million copies so far [the best-selling Disco record according to the Guinness Book of Records, no less), and shows no sign of abating since it was adopted by (of all things) Scotland football fans as an "anthem":

Even more camp was their second hit [despite their cult status, they only ever had two hits in the UK]:

The duo produced a few more singles that were hits in Europe, and even entered the Eurovision Song Contest - before they finally called it a day in 1979 and split into two rival camps, both using the name Baccara, neither of which had much success. Let's revel in a few more from their back catalogue, opening with this eye-opener:

RIP Maria Mendiola (4th April 1952 – 11th September 2021)

Have a good week, dear reader.

Your ways are hypnotizing me

Timeslip moment again...

We've parachuted from the Space Shuttle Voyager 1 into 1977, a very different world indeed - before mobile phones or the internet, when we only had three television channels and all of them focussed in on HM The Queen's Silver Jubilee, the year Virgina Wade won Wimbledon, the "Yorkshire Ripper" murders were first linked to a single perpetrator, the world's worst ever air disaster that killed 583 people happened in Tenerife, Star Wars premiered in the USA, the National Front goaded violent opposition by holding a series of rallies, there were clashes between strikers and police at the Grunwick film processing plant, the Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bollocks was released, and the Jeremy Thorpe scandal hit the headlines; born this year were Jonathan Rhys Meyers, HRH Peter Phillips, Apple Computers, Chris Martin, Skytrain, Orlando Bloom, Michael Fassbender, the M5 motorway and Kanye West; and Joan Crawford, Marc Bolan, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Sir Anthony Eden, Gary Gilmore, Groucho Marx, Zero Mostel and Charlie Chaplin all died.

In the news headlines in January '77: Home Secretary Roy Jenkins resigned to become President of the European Union, IRA bombs went off in London's West End (thankfully this time with no casualties), EMI dropped the Sex Pistols from its label, U.S. President Jimmy Carter took office, and The Pompidou Centre opened in Paris. In our cinemas: Rocky, The Pink Panther Strikes Again and Survive! On telly: Wings, Robin's Nest, Children of the Stones .

And in our charts this week forty-two years ago? One-hit-wonders Althea and Donna had scored a left-field Number 1 with Uptown Top Ranking, ending [to mass applause from a grateful public, I might add] the nine-week run at the top by the dreary Mull of Kintyre by Wings. Also present and correct were Odyssey, Scott Fitzgerald & Yvonne Keely, Donna Summer, Bonnie Tyler, Bob Marley, Bill Withers and Abba. But - fortuitously for our continuing countdown this week - lurking just outside the Top 10 were the eternally cheery Spanish duo Baccara...

I have featured their single Sorry I'm a Lady quite a few times on this very blog over the years, so I thought, for a change, I'd play the B-side - see what you think:

Fab lyrics. Fab choreography. Fab hair flicks. Ahem.

From Braintree to Benalmadena, and every disco I get in

Blossoms at RHS Hyde Hall

Whew! What a scorcher!

It has been (officially) the hottest May Day Bank Holiday in recorded history - the thermometers reached 28C (82F) today - and (as you, dear reader, may have noticed) I have been away. When people ask in the office tomorrow why I have such a tan; have I been on holiday? I shall answer yes! To Braintree...

The boys - Baby Steve and Houseboy Alex - were very good hosts; driving me across the highways and byways of Essex, to plant nurseries, antiques centres and to the Royal Horticultural Society's excellent gardens at Hyde Hall near Chelmsford.

Needless to say, I left (on the bus from nearby Stansted Airport) today weighed down with plants to fill our new garden - including sixteen new fuchsias from our fave specialist grower B & HM Baker, to add to the four we recently purchased from The Gardening Club. We're on our way to recreating our collection, peeps - fingers crossed the bloody gall mite doesn't get to this new locale...

I have not, of course, forgotten that it is (regardless of bank holidays) still a Tacky Music Monday! The boys and I (obviously) also spent a lot of time sat in their large and rambling garden, enjoying the sunshine - and playing loads of camp music. Like this one...

A block-buster of a collaboration, it not only features the divine Alaska of house favourites Fangoria, but also Baccara(!!), La Prohibida, La Terremoto de Alcorcón, and myriad other Spanish popstrels such as Marta Sánchez, Chenoa, Ruth Lorenzo, Nancys Rubias, Soraya Arnelas, Rosa López, Vicky Larraz, Boris Izaguirre, Javiera Mena, Innocence, and Alberto Jiménez (Miss Cafeína). ¡Muy bien!

That's just the thing to not only round off a lovely long weekend, but also to remind us that is is less than two weeks before we will be back in Spain... for our twentieth anniversary!

Have a good week, one and all...

They don't make men like you in our cee-ty

The end of this rather exhausting three weeks' leave is looming; just one weekend of sorting stuff out here at Dolores Delargo Towers, and then...

Stuff that. Let us cast all thoughts of such horrors aside, flick our hair, get our maxi-dresses and feather boas out of the wardrobe - and party along with Spain's finest, the uber-talented Baccara!

Lordy. Is that song really forty years old?

Hey ho. Thank Disco It's Friday!

Postcards from Amsterdam, phone calls from Birmingham

I was beginning to think it would never come. My last day in work was actually yesterday, but this week dragged on, and on, and on...

Now, however, we have even more cause to celebrate the impending weekend - as ours, from tomorrow, will be spent on the Costa del Sol!

Who else would we call upon to help us build that party atmosphere than the lovely ladies of Baccara? Here they are, gesticulating their tits off outside one of General Franco's finest architectural gems, with one of their lesser-known songs - Darling.

¡Gracias de Disco que es Viernes!, or, as we usually say - Thank Disco It's Friday!

Postcards from Amsterdam,
Phone calls from Birmingham,
To tell me only how you miss me
Received your telegram
Now you say, here I am
Oh, the way you hold, and kiss me.

Oh, darling, darling, darling,
Leave a little love for later on
Darling, darling, darling,
So that you can come back when you've gone
I idolize, your magic eyes, and I imagine
All the good things we can do, we can do
Oh, darling, darling darling,
Leave a little a secret on the shelf
Darling, darling, darling
So that you can come back in for more.
My fantasy runs fancy free, and I imagine
All the good things we can do, we can do

It's been a long, long time,
And you and me will climb
The mountains and the hills of passion.
Soft certain skin to skin,
Oh, what a mood I'm in
Bewitched by heart aggression

Oh, darling, darling, darling,
Leave a little love for later on
Darling, darling, darling,
So that you can come back when you've gone
I idolize, your magic eyes, and I imagine
All the good things we can do, we can do
Oh, darling, darling darling,
Leave a little a secret on the shelf
Darling, darling, darling
So that you can come back in for more.
My fantasy runs fancy free, and I imagine
All the good things we can do, we can do.

Fab lyrics.

I'm a sensation

As The Guinness Book of Records celebrates its 60th birthday this week, and as the long Bank Holiday weekend (our last till the Festering Season) is looming, I thought I'd delve into its vaults to get our traditional party started...

According to that veritable bible of World Records, the best-selling disco single ever is Baccara's Yes Sir I Can Boogie, with 18 million copies sold.

So here - as if I needed any excuse to play a long-time Dolores Delargo Towers favourite - is that record-breaking classic, for your delectation:

All together, now!

Mister
Your eyes are full of hesitation
Sure makes me wonder
If you know what you're looking for

Baby
I wanna keep my reputation
I'm a sensation
You try me once, you'll beg for more

Oh, yes sir, I can boogie
But a I need a certain song
I can boogie, boogie-boogie
All night long

And yes sir, I can boogie
If you stay, you can't go wrong
I can boogie, boogie-boogie
All night long

No sir
I don't feel very much like talking
No, neither walking
You wanna know if I can dance

Yes sir
Already told you in the first verse
And in the chorus
But I will give you one more chance

Oh, yes sir, I can boogie
But a need a certain song
I can boogie, boogie-boogie
All night long

Thank Disco It's Friday!

Have a good one...

Just a little shady

And so, it's almost here... After a final week in work that has been annoyingly slow (to say the least!) and irritating (more than normal), we only have one day to go before we hit the flesh-pots of the Costa del Sol!

To celebrate in traditional disco-tastic fashion at the end of the week here at Dolores Delargo Towers, it is the turn once more (of course) of that magnificently camp Spanish duo Baccara to provide us with a fitting finale to our countdown - Sorry I'm A Lady, indeed...

Our mantillas are starched, our wigs are suitably flicked and sprayed into submission, we have our cheesiest grins on, and we're preparing our fabled Baccara impression that we always do when we head for La Nogalera as we speak - Thank Disco It's Friday!

French lesson from Spanish girls

So the UK was stuffed at Eurovision again this year. So the majority of entries were terribly earnest, and the song contest is turning into a drama-fest rather than a constant source of fun.

It is still dear old Eurovision, after all, and over the years there have been some fabulously camp moments.

Not least, on this Tacky Music Monday, the fantabulosa Baccara (bizarrely in 1978 representing Luxembourg rather than their native Spain) with Parlez-vous Francais?. Even though the majority of you are back in work on this glorious Monday (I am still on leave till tomorrow), you cannot help but be cheered up!

Have a great week!

But I need a certain song

Oh, how I love the weekend!

Not only does it give us the chance to catch up on a bit of a lie-in after the dullness of work, but it also gives Madame Arcati and I a chance to flick our hair and practice those "special" dance moves, in order to perfect our famed Baccara impression...

I highly recommend you all do the same - Thank Disco It's Friday!

Enjoy it, whatever you get up to!

Mister, your eyes are full of hesitation
Sure makes me wonder, if you know what you're looking for
Baby, I wanna keep my reputation
I'm a sensation, you try me once, you're back for more

Ohh
Yes sir I can boogie
But I need a certain song
I can boogie, boogie boogie
All night long
Yes sir I can boogie
If you stay you can't go wrong
I can boogie, boogie boogie
All night long

No sir, I don't feel very much like talking
No neither walking, you wanna know if I can dance
Yes sir, already told you in the first word
And in the cold
But I will give you one more chance

Ohh
Yes sir I can boogie
But I need a certain song
I can boogie, boogie boogie
All night long
Yes sir I can boogie
If you stay you can't go wrong
I can boogie, boogie boogie
All night long

Cara Mia indeed

Another Tacky Music Monday looms. After such a great weekend, who else could I choose to cheer us all up with their eternal chirpiness but the fantastically talented Baccara?!

Friday, 28 May 2010

Well I can't seem to think of the things that a girl likes to hear

Closer still to the "Gay World Cup" - otherwise known as the Eurovision Song Contest - and we learn that some of our favourites this year including Netherlands and Switzerland have failed to qualify, and that a raft of cruddy over-wrought ballads got through.

Bleurgh! Maybe it is time to remind ourselves that this is not X-Factor nor any of those other shitty "battle of the balladeer" type programmes that Simon Cowell has foisted onto our telly screens, and that above all Eurovision should be fun!

Thank heavens for sparkly hot-pants

Recovering from a fabulous weekend in (very) sunny Surrey, and a late night last night with Madame Acarti's niece and nephew, it is a wet and miserable Monday.

Never mind, these lovely ladies should help cheer us up - and fulfil my mission to entertain the world with tacky music... Take it away, girls!

Alison vs Baccara

Reading the lovely little Tony's blog about the Goldfrapp concert at the Royal Albert Hall sent me on a mission to dig out some of their classics on YouTube. Then I came across this one... Love it!!!
