Going for a spin

Convoluted connections, #468 in a series...

Today is not only Xmas Day in Eastern Orthodox countries, but it's also Distaff Day.

WTF is that? I hear you ask.

From the Almanac website:

Distaff Day
The day after Epiphany was traditionally the one on which women went back to work after the 12-day Christmas celebration.

A distaff is the wooden rod (staff) that holds the flax or wool on a spinning wheel. The term distaff came to refer to both women’s work and the female branch (distaff side) of the family.

As is often the case, it’s hard to go back to work after the holidays and not much got done! The women’s husbands would mischievously try to set fire to the flax on their wives’ distaffs, while the women, lying in wait, would retaliate with humour by dousing them with buckets of water.

The English poet Robert Herrick wrote:

If the maids a-spinning goe
Burn their flax and fire their tow.
Bring the pails of water then
Let the maids bewash the men.
Oh, they knew how to have fun in the 16th century!

As is my wont, I have chosen a most "appropriate" choon for the day:

Beware of the Boys*

The delightful Ranveer Singh is my choice of Mithai!

Today is the feast day of Diwali - the Hindu "Festival of Light". True to form, we here at Dolores Delargo Towers are regularly "entertained" at this time of year by explosive fireworks night after night (some of which might be to do with this celebration, some might be early revelry to mark Bonfire Night this Friday; or indeed they might be for other many-and-varied celebrations in our multicultural neighbourhood from now until well into the New Year).

Regardless, raise a glass of Sharbat cocktail to those (often surprising) artists of Indian origin who have contributed to the world of popular music - including these...

...and then there's this [which was sampled in one of our favourite mashups ever]!

Diwali ki Shubhkamnayei!

[* "Mundian To Bach Ke" = "Beware of the Boys" in Hindi]

P.S.

Scarily, it is the sixtieth birthday today of Ralph Macchio, aka The Karate Kid!

Gawd! I had such a crush on him in the 1980s - and it is somewhat surprising to discover that he is in fact two years older than me...

Does anybody miss me? Anybody feel the way I do?

Another prodigious musical talent has departed for Fabulon - Mr Les Reed.

Who? I hear you say...

Mr Reed was the man behind myriad hits in the 1960s and 70s for the likes of Connie Francis, Gene Pitney, Sammy Davis Jnr., The Fortunes, Mirielle Mathieu, Sandie Shaw, The Dave Clark 5, Des O'Connor, Cleo Laine, The Drifters, Frank Ifield, The Applejacks, P.J. Proby, Petula Clark, Elvis Presley and many, many more.

Including these!

Classics, every one.

RIP, Leslie David Reed OBE (24th July 1935 – 15th April 2019)

Too bad, too bad

Grrrrr. Getting ready to head to the stuffy office - where colleagues routinely close all the windows (even in summer, some women feel the cold it seems) and close all the blinds (it shines on the computer screens, apparently; "sit away from the bloody windows!", say I) - and (unlike yesterday when it pissed down all day, preventing me from getting in the garden) it is glorious sunshine, and everything is looking lovely...

I can only hope to be home in time to catch some of it.

Hey ho, it is the (other, after Tom Jones) King of the power-ballad-and-tight-trousers-combo Engelbert Humperdinck's birthday today. So here he is, many years ago when he was still ruggedly handsome, with an appropriate number - Dommage, Dommage. Which is in English Too bad, too bad...

Many happy returns, Mr Humperdinck! (Engelbert Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey, 2nd May 1936)

A day for a Hump

May Day, Bank Holiday, whatever - it's still Tacky Music Monday to us here at Dolores Delargo Towers!

Today - appropriately enough - we're celebrating the 80th birthday of that maestro of tight-trousered, big-voiced, hairy-chested showbiz Mr Arnold George Dorsey - better known to the world as "The Hump", Englebert Humperdinck.

I'm not sure, but I think he may have a bit of difficulty these days with this particular number...

Subtlety was his forté.

Have a good week, one and all!

Humped!

We wuz robbed again. Sigh.

This year's Eurovision Song Contest was possibly the worst for years for obvious "block voting". Absolute shit songs gained ridiculously unwarranted douze points from their neighbours and political "friends", and some decent songs - The Hump, Jedward and that cute Norwegian boy included - were left languishing at the bottom of the pile. Again.

That wailing woman with split ends from Sweden won it. Apparently her record was released commercially a while ago and is already a hit in a lot of countries where there is no sun for six months, so I am not really surprised. The hilariously "so-bad-they're good" Russian grannies came a close second; again no surprise.

However, as we went further down the list, the truly hideous Serbian entry (with votes from all its allies and diplomatic votes from its neighbours) came third, and the piss-poor host nation Azerbaijan were fourth, and so on ad infinitum. Engelbert's song was way better then either of those, and Jedward once again gave the most "Eurovision" (i.e entertaining) performance of all the acts, yet got practically sod all votes. Our party was gob-smacked at the audacity of it all.

Speaking of which, our party was itself the star! As always, Dolores Delargo Towers was bedecked in bunting, flags and tinsel.

We encouraged - nay, let loose - our closest coterie of friends (fifteen of us this year!) into their dressing-up boxes, and the results were truly magnificent! If you knew our gang, you'd understand that this is of course second nature...

With guest appearances from Aphrodite from Greece, Franz Liszt from Hungary, an Azeri Cossack, a Romanian Gypsy, the living embodiment of the Albanian flag, two Engelberts, two Vikings, a White Russian, a French onion-seller and Miss Sverige 1976, and enough food and booze to feed an invading army - we had a fantastic time!

Crammed like Tetris into our front parlour, we cheered, we booed, we had fun with artificial facial hair, we voted on our specially crafted scoresheets (thanks, John-John!), we sang, we danced. A lot. I didn't actually get to bed till gone 6am, so that's always the sign of a good party!

Contest highlights? Not much in the way of music, admittedly (although the French girl defintely had the best voice), but there were some classic unintentionally hilarious moments - such as the Estonian boy's independently mobile eyebrows, "Rona the Ropehead" (Graham Norton's words) from Albania, that awful blindfolded performance from Lithuania, the genuine fear at one point that one of the Russian grannies was going to pop her clogs live on TV, the Turkish capes-into-sailboat visual trickery, and the weird musical instruments of Romania.

And the final votes from the Dolores Delargo Towers jury?

1 - Ireland:

2 - Russia
3 - France
4 - Ukraine
5 - United Kingdom
5 - Malta
6 - Norway
7 - Moldova
8 - Turkey
9 - Romania
10 - Sweden

We wuz certainly robbed, but... same time, same place, next year?

Definitely!

A smile bathed in light

So the Hump's entry to represent the UK at this year's Eurovision Song Contest has been revealed...

Do we think Love Will Set You Free is a winner? Probably not. It will certainly take a few more listens (and hopefully a more exciting arrangement suitable for the pyrotechnic-orientated modern contest) to get our juices really flowing.

However, as songs go, it is not the worst I have ever heard, and as I have said before, at least the man can sing!

[Thanks, John-John!]

So graceful and pure, a smile bathed in light
No matter the distance, a miracle of sight
Though I should have known, I could not turn away
When faced with your beauty no reason can stay

As you kiss him in the moonlight
With heavy words I say

If you love someone, follow your heart
‘Cause love comes once if you’re lucky enough
Though I’ll miss you forever, the hurt will run deep
Only love can set you free

Trust in your dreams, run with no fear
And if you should stumble remember I’m near
As a ghost I will walk, I’ll look deep in my soul
I might find another, you gave me that hope

So as you kiss him in the moonlight
With heavy words I say

If you love someone, follow your heart
‘Cause love comes once if you’re lucky enough
Though I’ll miss you forever and the hurt will run deep
Only love can set you free

And if you love someone, follow your heart
‘Cause love comes once if you’re lucky enough
Though I’ll miss you forever, the hurt will run deep
Love will set you free…

Hump Day!

The British entry for the Eurovision Song Contest is a bit of a surprise this year...

from The Telegraph:
Step forward Engelbert Humperdinck, the 75-year-old crooner who last had a top 20 hit in 1972.

The man christened Arnold George Dorsey - but known to his admirers as The Hump - will carry the hopes of the nation in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 26.

The Eurovision single, yet to be announced, has impressively cool credentials: it will be written and produced by the team behind Adele, Mary J Blige and Lana Del Rey.
Wow.

Now I know we are still on holiday, but it is nevertheless the end of another week, with all the partying and mayhem ahead. Thank Disco It's Friday, and all that!

However, with "The Hump" in the news, let's twist the genre slightly...

...and dance "The Hump" way!

We like a Dutch Topper

I cannot let a week focussing on Dutch music pass by without mentioning the incredible phenomenon that is De Toppers. Formed in 2005 by established "national treasures" the singers René Froger, Gordon Heuckeroth and Gerard Joling, this three-man extravaganza sold out a series of concerts in the gigantic 70,000-seater Amsterdam Arena stadium (home of AFC Ajax) for four years on the trot.

It's probably equivalent to a teaming of say, Paul Nicholas, Julian Clary and Bruce Forsyth selling out the O2!

With its irresistibly uber-camp combination of outrageous costumes, fireworks, glitter, dancing boys (and girls), and medleys of popular Dutch and English songs (inevitably of the cheesy variety), the Toppers Live! show is certainly nothing if not spectacular.

We always said we would love to go to one of their shows, but our personal favourite Gerard left the "band" last year just before they unsuccessfully entered this year's Eurovision Song Contest, and (despite his being replaced by Jeroen van der Boom) we're not sure whether the magic will be quite the same without his magnificent cape...
