Ella vive de amores prohibidos

Sigh. Here we go again...

The skies may have cleared this morning, but everything in the garden's looking rather sodden after last night's downpours.

Hey ho - it is a Tacky Music Monday, after all. And, sharing a birthday today (as she does) with another odd assortment including Divine, John le Carré, George McCrae, Sir Michael Gambon, Auguste Lumière, Jennifer Holliday, Simon Ward, Philip Pullman, Gloria Jones, John Lithgow, Peter Tosh, Mavis Nicholson, Bernard Hepton and Sinitta, is one of our fave camp divas to bring some much-needed cheer into our lives!

"Ella vive de amores prohibidos
Porque dice son más divertidos"

Which translates as:

"She lives on forbidden loves
Because she says they are more fun"

Indeed!

Have a good week, dear reader.

Muerto bailando

It's el Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) today - mainly in Central and South America, especially Mexico...

... and to that end, how about a little bit of this?

...or maybe, given the day's actual theme, this?!

¡Híjole!

Grito de Dolores

This could well be my day! It's apparently the commemoration of "The Cry of Dolores" - when in 1810 a local priest rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence.

Obscure, maybe, but the perfect excuse (if any were needed) to play one of our favourite Mexican divas here at - ahem - Dolores Delargo Towers:

I, Toña

As you are well aware, dear reader, there is nothing we at Dolores Delargo Towers love more than to discover a "new" diva to explore.

Here's one whose music popped up out of the blue on our beloved Clare Teal's show in her new home on Jazz FM a few weeks ago - Mexico's finest, Señorita Antonia del Carmen Peregrino Álvarez, known by her stage name Toña la Negra!

And here, for your delectation, are two examples of the great lady's talents:

¡Maravilloso!

Perfect sunny "Sunday Music", you will agree.

Macumba magic

Grrrrr. Momma's not happy to have to get up for work again...

Still, on this Tacky Music Monday, we always have the sparkling Senorita Castro and her gays de seguridad to cheer us up!

¡Ay, caramba!

¡Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!

The weather's all back-to-front again - hot and (sometimes) sunny during the week while we're chained to our desks, then damp and mizzly on the weekend. Typical bloody Britain.

Hey ho, here's something to cheer us all up - some perfect holiday music, courtesy of The Mariachis!

Originally assembled as a combo in an advertising campaign for those awful cardboard-with-added-chilli tortilla "snacks" Doritos, they have apparently gone down a storm ever since as the inevitable "novelty act" at a succession of festivals, including Glastonbury!

Being a determined commercial-telly-ad-break-avoider, I had never previously heard of them. Until today, when Our Jen pointed me in the direction of this faboo cover - of The Human League...

¡Está increíble!

Me encanta esto

Now that's what I call a Spider Plant!

After the whirlwind weekend (somewhat disappointing Proms in the Park and all) I wisely took today as leave - and it has been a particularly laid-back one indeed, making the most of the hazy sunshine in the extensive gardens of Dolores Delargo Towers while we still can. It's the autumnal equinox in a couple of weeks! Sigh...

To cheer ourselves up, as we always do after the official end of the Summer Season [which is marked by the Last Night of the Proms], today we booked our apartment in Spain for February. And this time, because it is a significant birthday for Madam Arcati, we've aligned the dates with half-term so that Baby Steve and Houseboy Alex can join us. Whoo-hoo!

Speaking of Spain [or at least, Hispanic - she's Mexican but was a star in Spain]... On this Tacky Music Monday, let us wallow in the musical - ahem - talents of an energetic young lady calling herself Yuri and her safety gays:

¡Muy bien!

Eye of the Tiger

Ah, Mondays. How we hate them.

After a "mixed blessing" weekend, weatherwise - miserable, cold and wet on Saturday followed by a magnificent 21C (71F) sunny day yesterday - it's back to work we go, only able to look out longingly upon the emerging springtime through tinted glass...

Never mind, on this Tacky Music Monday let's get into the fighting spirit in the company of the utterly terrifying Irma Serrano - the fierce ruling diva known as "La Tigresa" - in this marvellous clip from Tierra Mala.

Lord only knows what she's so angry about (maybe she has to work in a soulless office too, or maybe she's just annoyed that man has his cock in his hand?), but she is fabulous!

The life story of Miss Irma Serrano is a fascinating, OTT and camp one (as one might expect), full of scandal and outrage - and you should turn to my blog "La Tigresa" from this time last year to read the whole tacky saga.

Homosexuality doesn't hurt

We mourn the loss today of one of the most beloved performers in Mexico (and the Spanish-speaking world), Chavela Vargas.

Another exotic diva we had previously only recently discovered here at Dolores Delargo Towers, on investigating the lady and her career it seems she had a fascinating life. She was reputedly the lover of Freda Kahlo, she went from being a street singer in Mexico City in the 1950s to perform at the wedding of Elizabeth Taylor to Mike Todd, and after a decline due to excessive drinking and hard-living her career was revived in the 90s by none other than Pedro Almodóvar.

Just last year, at the age of 92, she released a new album of the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca and received standing ovations while performing on stage in a wheelchair.

From The Telegraph:
Chavela Vargas was famed for breaking Mexico’s Roman Catholic preconceptions of what it meant to be a female singer.

Singing "ranchera" songs – songs about love and lust usually performed by men – Vargas was seen drinking from a bottle of tequila, wearing men's clothes, carrying a pistol and smoking cigars.

Vargas publicly came out as a lesbian in her autobiography, You Want to Know About My Past, at the age of 81.

"Homosexuality doesn't hurt,"
she said. "What hurts is when you're treated like you have the plague because of it."

RIP

La Tigresa

As regular readers will know, here at Dolores Delargo Towers, the discovery of a new exotic "diva" sends us into paroxysms of joy.

And so it came to pass when, after I featured her album among my "On the Jukebox" selection over at the Dolores Delargo Museum of Camp recently, the erstwhile Madam Arcati was immediately on Google to find out more about the sultry sex kitten that is Irma Serrano. He found the music, and the fact she is scarily still alive. I investigated the lady's outrageous life story...

Senorita Serrano - according to her own autobiography - was allegedly kidnapped at the age of 13 or 14 from her ranch home in rural Mexico, and ended up entering the burgeoning Mexican cinematic industry. In truth the teenage Irma Cielo Consuelo Serrano Castro Domínguez had run away with an older lover, and this early rebellious streak set the scene for a long and controversial life.

Her screen career actually began in 1962 in a trashy movie called Santo vs. the Zombies alongside several Mexican wrestling superstars. Presumably this was a precursor of how she would become regarded throughout her acting career, for it seems that in all her roles she played some kind of "man-eater". It was inevitable she would become known as "La Tigresa".

Allegedly blacklisted for her affair with Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, Mexico’s president, she hit the headlines in the 1970s after she published several books about it. Her flamboyant appearance and tempestuous personality brought her renewed fame on stage and screen.

In the 1990s, she became a businesswoman and launched a political career, running successfully for Congress on the ticket of the leftist PRD, serving initially in the lower house and later in the Senate.

"La Tigresa" remained a popular television personality, too - most probably for her freaky appearance as much as anything - but just could not keep out of trouble. She scandalised the Mexican tabloids at the age of 71 by marrying a man of 29! She seems to specialise in telling tales about her many affairs with younger men (some were true, most were denied), and conducting public spats with a few of them. She has hit the headlines for claiming to be a witch, a Satanist, and being pregnant - in her seventies!

To top it all, in 2009 she was arrested immediately after a TV appearance and placed under house arrest, charged with forcibly evicting tenants (at gunpoint allegedly!) from a building she owned, despite their having a valid lease.

I wouldn't mess with her!

This Tacky Music Monday let us celebrate the stunning musical talents of "La Tigresa"...

Ay caramba!
