Oh-ay, ay-ay

Our Grand Annual Picnic was a fabulous day of booze, food, merriment, sunshine and good friends.

Born on this day (among many others): Henri Nestlé [who marketed the world's first milk chocolate], composer Alexander Glazunov, Miss Norma Shearer [“What do you expect? She sleeps with the boss.” - Joan Crawford], the "Queen of Technicolor" Rhonda Fleming, soul diva Patti Austin, [the former Mr Debbie Reynolds then Mr Elizabeth Taylor] Eddie Fisher, first female Lord Justice of Appeal [and auntie of Nigel Havers] Baroness Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, the "Tin Man" in The Wizard of Oz Jack Haley, the fantabulosa and much-missed Miss Kate O'Mara, the equally fab Miss Ronnie Spector, TV garden makeover queen Charlie Dimmock, sex god Antonio Banderas...

...and ME!!

By way of a celebration, here's something from one of my birthday compatriots:

As for getting older, I'm with Sophia:

Sondheim of the Day - Follies

Reputedly inspired by a famous photograph of Glora Swanson posing among the rubble of New York's Roxy Theatre, Follies was a triumphal moment in Stephen Sondheim's career, despite the fact that (as one of the most expensively-staged musicals in history at the time) it almost bankrupted itself, and him.

Aptly described by the New York Times thus: "imagine 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', choreographed by Busby Berkeley", this tangled web of a tale revolves around a gathering of former troupers at their old alma mater The Weisman Theatre just before it is demolished forever, their memories as they each perform their old "signature numbers" echoed by the ghosts of their younger selves swirling around, and often in, the action. Core to the tale is the bitterly crumbling entanglement of relationships involving Ben and Phyllis (who have clearly been scoring resentful and acidic barbs off eachother for the entirety of their long marriage), and Buddy and Sally (an unhappy and loveless couple; he's been having a long-term affair, and she's been carrying a desperate torch for Ben since they were all teenagers). Sounds tragic, and in parts it is - but oh! What a show it creates...

Opening with the parade of old chorines [and in its many, many revivals, real-life stars-past-their-best galore have flocked to appear in it - Dorothy Lamour, Régine, Yma Sumac, Carol Burnett, Vikki Carr, Polly Bergen, Hildegarde, Lynn Bari, Patty Duke, Stella Stevens, Juliet Prowse, Virginia Mayo, Kaye Ballard, Marni Nixon, Jo Anne Worley, Edie Adams, Blythe Danner, Pearl Carr, Linda Lavin, Vivian Blaine, Betty Garrett and Maxene Andrews among them], "Hats off, here they come!" Well, maybe not the ones you were expecting...

Now, I could probably do a whole standalone blog post featuring the awe-inspiring list of femmes d'une certaine age who have shimmied into the spotlight for this next one! The showstopper-to-beat-all-showstoppers, it's been done by the likes of Ann Miller, Julie Wilson, Shirley MacLaine, Stritchy (of course!), Yvonne DeCarlo, Christine Baranski, Elaine Paige, Dolores Gray, Millicent Martin, cabaret artistes and drag queens in their thousands [and Madam Arcati and I at many a drunken party!]...

...and this sparkling diva:

[We actually saw Miss Kitt perform this at an all-star gala fundraiser for Children in Need in 2005]

But there's so much more to go yet...

[My all-time favourite take on this is, of course, the "gay" version by David Kernan, as featured here]

[Another from the show that has been covered by numerous divas, including the original cast member Dorothy Collins, Julia McKenzie, MegaBabs and Patti LuPone]

It's quite a show! So good, we went to see it twice - well, in two different incarnations, anyhow.

The first of these was a (typically) glittering revue performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015, produced by Strictly Come Dancing's Craig Revel-Horwood, and featuring an all-star cast including Christine Baranski, Ruthie Henshall, Alexander Hanson, Peter Polycarpou, Stefanie Powers, Anita Dobson, Betty Buckley, Lorna Luft, Anita Harris and Roy Hudd. The second was the magnificent 2017 revival at The National Theatre starring Imelda Staunton, Janie Dee, Philip Quast, Peter Forbes, Tracie Bennett, Di Botcher, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Zizi Strallen (among others), with its breath-taking sets and costumes.

I'd go again tomorrow, if a new production was in the offing!

All you need to know about Follies, once again thanks to Everything Sondheim

RIP, Stephen Joshua Sondheim (22nd March 1930 – 26th November 2021)

A Great Witt

The Partridge Family, Soap, Benson - and The Golden Girls! All of them (and much, much more) were the brainchild of producer Paul Junger Witt, who blows out 70 candles on his cake today...

Any excuse, really, to post a clip of our favourite drag queen mentors in action:

I'm as jumpy as a virgin at a prison rodeo

Rue McClanahan is dead, and I am wearing a black armband...

As the man-hungry Blanche Devereaux in Golden Girls, she was an inspiration and often the character with the best lines in the show. How we loved her constant quest for the next man, and failing that, banana cream pie... The "slut style" she created pre-dated Sex In The City by fifteen years and yet, unlike that series, The Golden Girls never seems to date and is always fabulous to watch.

Here are some of Blanche's finest moments. RIP, darling...
Blanche: [after being awakened by the ringing phone] "I'm as jumpy as a virgin at a prison rodeo!"
Dorothy: "Boy, that's pretty jumpy."

Blanche: "When Blanche Devereaux goes after a man, she doesn't stand on ceremony!"
Sophia: "Or the floor."

Blanche: "What do you think of my new dress? Is it me?"
Sophia: "It's too tight, it's too short and shows too much cleavage for a woman your age."
Dorothy: "Yes, Blanche. It's you."

Blanche: "I treat my body like a temple."
Sophia: "Yeah, open to everyone, day or night."

Blanche: [to Sophia] "My mistake. I thought since you look like Yoda you were also wise."

Blanche: [explaining why she wore red at her wedding instead of white] "Oh please, it's bad enough hearing all those snickers as you walk down the aisle, but me in white, even I couldn't keep a straight face."

Blanche: "You know what I hate doing most after a party?"
Rose: "Trying to find your underwear in the big pile?"

Picture it... Sicily

They're dropping like flies this week...

First we lost the lovely Jo Stafford (read her obituary in The Telegraph), and today there's the very sad news of the death of Estelle Getty.

Always cast in parts that were much older than she was, Estelle was most famous as the irascible Sophia in The Golden Girls. Despite playing the mother, Miss Getty was in fact a year younger than her "daughter" Bea Arthur!

As the struggling actress daughter of Polish immigrants, her breakthrough came courtesy of Harvey Fierstein, who cast Miss Getty as his mother in the Broadway version of Torch Song Trilogy.

From there she had some small parts in movies such as Tootsie and Mask before being catapulted to stardom by landing the part of Dorothy's mother in what is now one of the most-loved of all American comedies since The Lucy Show.

Her later years were clouded by dementia, and she was unable to make a few Golden Girls reunions due to ill-health. We will all miss her terribly, but her lasting legacy is with us for ever:

Some of her best lines:
Blanche: We just rented that movie Aliens, it scared us half to death.
Sophia: I found it scary too. That Sigourney Weaver is a sweet girl but she really shouldn't go without makeup.

Blanche: I treat my body like a temple.
Sophia: Yeah, open to everyone, day or night.

Stan: Hello Sophia, you're looking younger every day.
Sophia: Hi Stan, and that's a beautiful toupee you're wearing. Great, now we're both liars.

Dorothy: Ma, you're making this up!
Sophia: So what? I'm old, I'm supposed to be colourful.

Rose: Sophia, why are you in such a bad mood?
Sophia: Excuse me Rose, but I haven't had sex in fifteen years and its starting to get on my nerves.

Dorothy: Hi, ma. Where are you going?
Sophia: To the boardwalk. I like to watch the old guys rearrange themselves when they come out of the water.

A Golden moment

A lovely photo of the remaining Golden Girls arriving at something called the TV Land Awards this week. This cheered me up!

TV Land is a retro TV station in the US apparently.

Golden...

Dorothy: Blanche, you dated Tony Bennett?
Blanche: Honey, I did more than date him! He may have left his heart in San Francisco, but he left his shorts on my radiator.

To celebrate the 73rd birthday of the lovely Rue McLanahan, here is a fab clip of the Golden Girls singing:

An entire album of songs from the show is available to download! Golden Girls website.

Needless to say, we have a copy.
