You always were two steps ahead

Lordy. Miss Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl turns 50 years old today...

I simply adored the duo through their avant garde roots right through to this storming Todd Terry remix of their most famous hit - it's Missing (of course):

I step off the train
I'm walkin' down your street again
And past your door
But you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
And now you've disappeared somewhere
Like outer space
You've found some better place

And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you
Oh
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Could you be dead?
You always were two steps ahead
Of ev'ryone
We'd walk behind while you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you shout, down to me
Where I always used to be

And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you
(Like the deserts miss the rain)

Back on the train
I ask why did I come again
Can I confess
I've been hangin' 'round your old address?
And the years have proved
To offer nothin' since you moved
You're long gone
But I can't move on

And I miss you
Oh-oh (Like the deserts miss the rain)
And I miss you, yeah
(Like the deserts miss the rain) And I miss you

I am surely not the only one who considers the fact she was never seen in the same room as Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney Trotter)...

  1. Wow - it seems like every other person is turning 50 these days. Thank god that 50 is the new 40 (or 30 even).

  2. Don't let them fool you. 50 is 50.
But you still can have fun.

When I am an old, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves'
.....and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
.....and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
.....and make up for the sobriety of my youth

    1. ...but not "with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me".

I always like to co-ordinate! Jx

    2. Not to mention that you don't want to be mistaken as a member of the Red Hat Society.

  3. Tracey Thorn has a new Christmas album due out in Oct. - I really liked some of her Love & It's Opposite album.

  4. I've loved her since that first EBTG album all those years ago. That beautiful burgundy voice...

(Although I have friends who always say she looks like a melted Princess Di!)
