RIP one of the most gorgeous Hollywood actors ever, famous for his roles in Spartacus, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Imitation of Life and Psycho, John Gavin (born John Anthony Golenor, 8th April 1931 - 9th February 2018)
Agreed. One of the most gorgeous men to grace the silver screen. Other fabulous films he appeared in were ‘Imitation of Life’ with Lana Turner, ‘Back Street’ with Susan Hayward those technicolor extravaganza’s produced by Ross Hunter and usually dressed by Jean Louis. Forever the heartthrob of Psycho!
I do wish Hollywood would get back to doing those Technicolor extravaganzas - and where exactly are the actors/actresses nowadays who know how to do melodrama properly..? Jx
I don’t know there is anybody. I watched a documentary on Bette Davis recently bemoaning the acting choices of then contemporary actors and actresses where she said that she never believed in acting “naturally” that her choice was to heighten the experience for the audience always, because you could see natural at home (which definitely helped me understand better her sometimes melodramatic style). I’m just not sure anyone today would be able to match the glorious hysteria of a Turner or Hayward...?

Delete"Acting naturally" can never be "camp". And that, after all, was the secret of success for the great ladies of Hollywood (in my opinion)... Jx
DeleteNow how come my radar didn't pick this fine gentleman up? I've seen most of his films.
ReplyDeleteRIP
Sx
I remember more of John Gavin's chest in Psycho than I do of Janet Leigh's underwear... Jx
DeleteWow! Never thought much about him one way or the other, but these pictures have made me a fan!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. Jx
DeleteMe too! And those eyes...
DeleteI think I need to read something banal to calm myself. That newspaper looks like just the thing!
I'd like to see the inside pages... Jx
