The past is your present, the future is mine

Another busy ol' day in the extensive gardens here at Dolores Delargo Towers today, dear reader! Every plant I brought back from Essex [all those pictured yesterday, plus ten new or replacement fuchsias - rooted cuttings from our fave nursery B & HM Baker at Bourne Brook Nurseries] has now been potted up in new compost, and I also dug out and potted individually loads of free ferns that had self-seeded in several big pots up and down the garden, as well as other pottering jobs that needed attending to. Five hours later, I finally packed everything away. Tomorrow is another day...

Back to today, however, and among a raft of ill-assorted names such as John Waters, Lenin, Jack Nicholson, George Cole [whose centenary is is], J. Robert Oppenheimer, Glen Campbell, Aaron Spelling, Yehudi Menuhin, Charles Mingus, Dame Ethel Smyth, Bettie Page, Henry Fielding, Kathleen Ferrier, Vladimir Nabokov, Peter Frampton, Donald Tusk and - ahem - Amber Heard, it's the 70th birthday today of the legendary producer/remixer Mr Arthur Baker!

His is an impressive back-catalogue of classics, so, without further ado, here are just a few of them:

I can practically smell the Aramis!

    1. Getting there - but loads more to do yet before we can play "garden Tetris" and move the pots into their final summer positions! Jx

  2. Hot Gossip proved a bit too racy for TOTPs, didn't they?! All vaseline, Aramis or Jazz aftershave!
I need to dig my garden and start a war with the ground elder. There's a lot to be said for container gardening.

    1. Indeed, at least two members of "Zoo" were from Hot Gossip. The era of dance troupes appearing on TOTP was coming to en end by the time of this video, as the age of the music video and MTV was in the ascendant. They barely lasted until the end of that year.

Ground elder! Hideous stuff. The boys in Essex have plenty of pernicious weeds to deal with too, including creeping ivy, ground elder and blue alkanet. At least we don't have to deal with those, just bloody sycamore seedlings and annual weeds... Good luck! Jx

  3. Aramis !
In the USA what guy didn’t get the gift set of cologne, deodorant and soap.
Stetson was another that came out in 1980, the mens scent of that decade.

    1. Here in the UK, aside from Aramis, I remember the popular men's fragrances being the likes of Kouros, Pierre Cardin Pour Homme and the godawful Drakkar Noir... Jx

  4. My scent of the decade was L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent.

    1. It was still popular in Wales in the 80s - alongside YSL "Kouros", Paco Rabanne "Pour Homme" and - unfortunately - Guy Laroche "Drakkar Noir" (bleurrgh!). Jx
