Just a sample of the delights on show at the Orchid Festival at Kew Gardens, that Madam Arcati, John-John and I trolled off to see on Sunday.
It was, as planned, the perfect way to end my holiday (the Madam was already back at work after our trip to Spain), even if the arrangements were a bit disomfiting in comparison to previous visits - we had to queue in the cold for our ticketed timeslot, much of the Princess of Wales Conservatory (where the event is hosted) was roped-off so we couldn't meander past some of our fave specimens as usual, and in general it all felt a bit like being ushered along a conveyor-belt.
Albeit a very beautiful, colourful and floral one!
Here's something - ahem - appropriate to accompany this floral display, from one of our favourite German eccentrics Fraulein Nina Hagen [who has a milestone birthday coming up next month, so I doubt this will be the last we hear of her]!
I love the looks of shock on the audience's faces...
What an incongruous audience for Nina Hagen. I was wondering what would happen when she discovered she had lost her flowers. That orchid cornucopia is spectacular.
ReplyDeleteNina Hagen at a dinner-dance is rather an odd fit, I agree.
DeleteWe thought the orchid displays were really excellent, too - although I could have done without the tatty animal and bird constructions! They were a distraction. Jx
I needed to see some lovely blooms!
ReplyDeleteThe Philadelphia Flower Show is upcoming and I have never once attended. The flowers themselves are beautiful I hear, but they always seem to have to have themes for some reason, with added hookie props and such added. Rather tacky. I'd rather see the flowers in a natural habitat like Longwood Graden does. But I suppose the housewives and kiddies need the added "whimsy" piff.
I had a look at photos of that Philly show. "Disneyland with begonias" came to mind... Stick to Longwood Gardens, dear! Much nicer, and the nearest you have to Kew. Jx
DeleteAnother Grand Day out Gromit.
ReplyDeleteEliza Doolittle: I sold flowers; I didn't sell myself. Now you've made a lady of me, I'm not fit to sell anything else.
Ruth Brown: "If I can't sell it, I'm gonna sit down on it
DeleteI ain't gonna give it away
Darling if you want it, you're gonna have to buy it
I mean just what I say!"
Nothing to do with our fab visit to Kew, but it fits.
Jx
(vvs)
I just looked up the Bundesgartenschau or BUGA, and find that it was supposed to take place in Rostock this year - but the city cancelled it because it was too expensive! What a shame...
DeleteNina Hagen is a living legend. Full stop (or should I say the more appropriate-sounding Punkt?!)! Jx
