Morecambe & Wise and the tribute statue to Eric in his home town Morecambe, after which he took his stage name. [click any pic to embiggen]
It's another snippets post today, dear reader:
- National treasure news: It's the centenary today of one of Britain's most beloved comedians, Eric Morecambe, "the funny half" of the prime-time-TV staples Morecambe and Wise. He was a phenomenon, and their popularity led to an endless stream of top guests, including one soon-to-be-Dame:
Morecambe & Wise - Shirley Bassey:
- Where does time go? news: Over at the superb Bitterness Personified blog, Mr Graham Russell reminds us that we're all getting old - it is 45 years since Grace Jones' magnum opus the album Nightclubbing was released! Gulp.
- It's a Heartache news: The legendary Bonnie Tyler is "seriously ill but stable" after undergoing emergency surgery in Portugal, where she has a home. Get well soon, darling!
- Ol' Mackie news: It's ninety years since the great swinger Walden Robert Cassotto, better known as Bobby Darin was born!
- And finally: The utterly faboo Miss Alison Goldfrapp was 60 years old yesterday! Another gulp.
And the weather? Up and down like a whore's drawers again, dear reader - one minute brilliant sunshine, the next black skies, rain and even thunder. Britain, Britain, Britain.
I loved all of this x
ReplyDeleteWe aim to please, sweetie! Jx
DeleteI will be smiling for the rest of the day! Days later, but welcome back, sweetpeas! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Savvy! It's been a busy week, all told, getting the garden sorted and doing bits and bobs of cleaning and tidying in the house to get it ready for our Eurovision party on Saturday, but I'm still smiling too! Jx
DeleteFlippin' 'eck! Alison Goldfrapp is 60?!?
ReplyDeleteWhile it's a lovely tribute and well deserved, the Eric Morecombe statue will surely be lonely without its "less funny" half.
Ernie has his own, equally lonely, statue in Morley in Yorkshire, where he was born. It's not as good a likeness, either, poor sod. Jx
DeleteI thought it was lovely how all the big serious celebs queued up to be on M&W and proved that that had a silly side.

Indeed. Apart from seeing Angela Rippon's legs, we even got to see Glenda Jackson laugh, which she didn't seem to do often. Jx
DeleteI preferred The Two Ronnies. What did you think of Joan Collins' hairdo at the recent Cannes film festival? There was someone else I wanted to draw your attention to but I've forgot, It'll come to me. Bjork is 60 too, how shocking is that?
ReplyDeleteBeavis? or Butthead? came to mind.
DeleteJanet Jackson, Dean Cain, Halle Berry, Annabella Lwin of Bow Wow Wow, Charlie Dimmock, Shirley Manson, Stacy Lattisaw and Doris Pearson out of Five Star are all turning 60 this year as well.
Jx
I'm with Mitzie on the Ronnies.
DeleteI agree - the Two Ronnies' style of humour was a lot cleverer than Morecambe and Wise, but there's room for both - and the latter's incredible array of special guests being encouraged to do funny sketches was always a joy; their Xmas specials in particular were an integral part of family viewing over the season, with massive viewing figures. Jx
DeleteI've remembered
ReplyDeleteFuck! She ate all the pies, didn't she? Jx
DeleteOMG. 45 years since Grace Jones' Nightclubbing was released. It does seem like a very long time ago but 45 years!!!
ReplyDeleteTerrifying, isn't it? Jx
