Maniac brainiac winning the game
As the country settles back down to what laughingly passes for reality, and Boris basks in his landslide election victory - so there is really only one appropriate song to play.
Of course, being moi, it just has to be the Bhangra version...
"It's gettin' it's gettin' it's gettin' kinda heavy
I've got the power
I've got the power oh-oh-oh-oh!"
Indeed he has.
Thank Disco(?) It's Friday [the thirteenth - oo-er]!!

Oh, Jon, please tell me we’re all going to be OK. I just don’t understand what’s going on around us. I promise to believe you.
ReplyDeleteAt least we have a majority government for a change, for what it's worth - from what I read, your neck of the woods is in turmoil again, with the Socialists trying desperately to find some friends so they can actually form a government. How very Spanish. Jx
DeleteBoth bbc and Channel Four Threatened, though. (and I work in a hospital, so... Yeah.)
ReplyDeleteChannel 4 has long gone past any kind of reason for existence. It began as a superb, challenging and truly "alternative" channel. Now its programming revolves around such shit as Gogglebox, The Undateables, Hollyoaks, more reality TV and repeats. It should have been sold off to Dave or Really years ago.
DeleteAs for the other two, we'll see.
Jx
There's still Channel Four news, Dispatches, Unreported World. I wouldn't want to risk not having these programmes. The Tiger Who Came to Tea, planned for Christmas, looks terrific.
ReplyDeleteAnd there's Cucumber / Banana - and isn't Russel T Davies series about AIDS going to be on in the new year?
The BBC is a global brand, it can always remind politicians how valued it is in America etc. Channel Four doesn't have that and is much more vulnerable. (although Lou Reed once rewrote the lyrics of Walk on the Wild Side to lend support to C4 in a libel action)
I am an avid supporter of the BBC, mainly because of its sheer breadth, including not just the telly programming but also all the radio stations, the musicians, bands and orchestras it supports, and of course the Proms. Almost every government since the Beeb was founded has attacked it for "partisan" news reporting however, so it does tread a fine line sometimes.
DeleteOn the subject of Russell T Davies - why on earth his Cucumber/ Banana/Tofu programmes weren't on the BBC is beyond me. Cucumber sat very uncomfortably alongside such pap as Grand Designs and Made in Chelsea, Banana was lost on the no-ratings-at-all channel E4, and Tofu was only on-demand. Shame.
Jx
I've no idea except the bbc seems a bit over cautious at the moment. rtd claims he never considered taking Cucumber or Boys to the BBC
DeleteI think we are lucky to have *two* public service broadcasters in this country.
I do not consider Channel 4 as providing a "public service". Not for around two decades. Jx
DeleteIt *is* a public service broadcaster.
DeleteHaving said that I could sit here for hours Listing things i treasure the BBC for.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Jx
DeleteYou forgot Film Four!
ReplyDeleteWhoever owns Dave or Really has got enough money, and there's no need for another 100% commercial channel.
Does Film Four exist any more? One would hardly notice. In its heyday, it was proudly "above the banner" on such ground-breaking productions as My Beautiful Laundrette, Letter to Brezhnev, Rita, Sue & Bob Too, and those Peter Greenaway and Merchant Ivory films. I hadn't heard of its involvement in much recently... Jx
DeleteI'll be honest, I don't often put the TV on. I'm looking forward to Dr Who in the new year. And as a mum I'm grateful for Go Jetters, Hey Duggie, Horrible Histories, etc.
ReplyDeleteI get my licence fee's worth out of radio four, radio three, 4extra and the World Service. Also Evil Genius and You're Dead to Me (online only)
