Beware of the Boys*

The delightful Ranveer Singh is my choice of Mithai!

Today is the feast day of Diwali - the Hindu "Festival of Light". True to form, we here at Dolores Delargo Towers are regularly "entertained" at this time of year by explosive fireworks night after night (some of which might be to do with this celebration, some might be early revelry to mark Bonfire Night this Friday; or indeed they might be for other many-and-varied celebrations in our multicultural neighbourhood from now until well into the New Year).

Regardless, raise a glass of Sharbat cocktail to those (often surprising) artists of Indian origin who have contributed to the world of popular music - including these...

...and then there's this [which was sampled in one of our favourite mashups ever]!

Diwali ki Shubhkamnayei!

[* "Mundian To Bach Ke" = "Beware of the Boys" in Hindi]

P.S.

Scarily, it is the sixtieth birthday today of Ralph Macchio, aka The Karate Kid!

Gawd! I had such a crush on him in the 1980s - and it is somewhat surprising to discover that he is in fact two years older than me...

  1. Well Ranveer is hot!
Good to see Englebert and the inspired special effects from the seventies, which see him floating through the night.

    1. I was strangely drawn by Mr Singh's - ahem - talents...

I'm not sure who was more high on drugs in that Engelbert video - the dancers, or the special effects man. Jx

  2. I have been listening to a collection of Indian chill music non-stop in the mini cooper for over a month now. I adore it. I'd forgotten about Cornershop! Engelbert and Freddy are classics. Thanks for sharing. As for Ralph... he reminded me too much of Scott Baio (or Scott B.O. as I used to say) - a repugnant man in league with the orange ogre. Thanks for the memories. Kizzes. And enjoy the holiday!

    1. We have several compilations of various types of Indian music, from chill to full-on Bhangra. Love it all!

Shame about Scott Baio's political lunacy. He was always easy on the eye as Chachi in Happy Days... Jx

  3. Drat it! I'm not in the office today and there're bound to be loads of Diwali celebrations, decorations and treats. Speaking of, Ranveer is a sweet treat indeed. I think I need to go and brush my teeth now.

    Love "Brimful of Asha"!

  4. Gracious, Ranveer certainly knows how to fill out a Diwali.

    1. Apparently it is traditional to "dip a wick in ghee or vegetable oils" by way of celebration.

I wholeheartedly embrace that idea. Jx

  5. OhJon! If you were not 10,000 miles away (and not inclined to hug girls anyway) I would hug you.
Your lead-in said "of Indian origin" and there was Mr Humperdinck and I thought, for one scarey moment you'd have Harry Webb flicking his hair back.
I can tell you, I scrolled verrry carefully! Might need a little Ravi Shankar to revive myself...

    1. Heavens! Never in a million years would I feature anything Cliff Richard ever did on this blog! Mr Humperdick's here because - unlike the "ever-so-not-gay" Miss Webb; or indeed Spike Milligan, Felicity Kendal, Joanna Lumley and so on, who were born of British parents who just happened to be based there as part of the military presence - he is indeed half Indian by birth.

Speaking of Mr Shankar, I could have featured his own kid Norah Jones, but a) her mum is American, and b) she bores me to tears.

  6. I'm so far behind today's pop scene I'll be in time for all the "return" alnums!

    1. I can't imagine you'd even notice if Norah Jones released a "return album"... Jx

There are not many female singers I can listen to.

    1. I can listen to gazillions of female singers - such as Dusty, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Dame Shirl, Lena Horne, Bette Midler, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Ms Minnelli, Ella, Aretha, Cher and so on (and on and on and on) - but the "modern" crop of "wibblers" like Whitney, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and similar, or "nasal-girls-who-cannot-pronounce-any-consonants" like Rihanna, Ariana Grande and their ilk, or those "earnest-girls-with-or-without-guitars" (into which category I would place Norah Jones) - NO THANKS!
